I hope this makes sense: the colorful, psychedelic imagery in the poster wasn’t really in the film, but I still felt that. Ya know? Spike Lee is so good at giving you a physical reaction.
Felt like a shock to the system after weeks of lazy, passionless filmmaking. It is the story of two wars that never ended - Vietnam and civil rights - and it contains stunning work from Lindo, Majors, Blanchard, and Lee.
Spike lee does The Treasure of the Sierra Madre as men-on-a-mission, hangout/heist picture through black history and Vietnam only instead of being slowly corrupted by greed Lee wrestles with how we are already corrupted and haunted by imperialism, whether we understand exactly how or why or the all-consuming depth of it or not. Delroy Lindo gives one of the most brutally sad, destructive performances in a Lee joint (no small feat, especially considering his own in Crooklyn) playing a man whose seething rage, political contradictions, and emotional complexities are as direct a counter-point to retroactively trying to "win" this conflict through cinema as there's ever been. Nothing easy or fair or righteous about the application of violence or the allocation of resources as dictated from the top down so if you manage to survive the senseless carnage on the ground you might as well take what you can and give to the cause.

What a colossal disappointment. How does one go from making Blackklansman, a movie that subtly uses issues and events of the past to comment on our current society, to making a movie that does the same thing except just shoves it down your throat the entire runtime.
Everything about this seems so rushed. It’s extremely ugly, it has the cinematography and color palette of a Hangover movie. Every dialogue scene is shot reverse shot until your brain melts. the kind of mess only a brilliant overly emotional person with a thousand ideas could make, and i love that about it. of course this is about the way the state weaponizes anger and trauma, the cruel irony of two oppressed groups forced to fight each other for something they don't benefit from, but the thing i thought the most about was how hard it is to move forward when there are so many landmines from the past blocking your way, it's impossible, they make it impossible, state violence is an infinite ripple effect. whatever this movie's faults (and i am certainly not the right person to analyze them), this is an essential perspective on this clusterfuck of a war,…

This was sprawling and at times hard to swallow and can feel like less of a movie and more of a lesson, but wow if I wasn’t wowed.
Spike Lee is, above all, a black man in his 60’s who is a father and a democrat.
The choices around aging here? The Irishman is shaking.
I genuinely loved the credits.
Marvin Gaye used so wonderfully throughout the movie, though one moment in particular sticks out in my mind.
I cannot wait for Jonathan Majors’ whole career. Literally praying for him to be a good person.
