Low budget Lynchian noir snorted up the nose of the Hellraiser universe. Derrickson admirably does a lot with a little, definitely showing signs of creativity that would continue to flourish over the years. Commonly stated in just about every review, Hellraiser: Inferno was a script with Hellraiser elements added afterward, but I don’t really mind in this particular instance, I dig the year 2000, Se7en-raiser vibe (WAYYYY much more than the latest Judgment installment) and legit think if this was about 10 minutes tighter with another million bucks behind it that we’d be singing the praises of Inferno quite a bit more.
With that said, I legitimately dig this movie and could watch I-V at any given time.
Scott Derrickson, you are something.
Hellraiser 5 follows a shady police detective who becomes embroiled in a strange world of murder, sadism, and madness after being assigned a murder investigation against a madman known only as "The Engineer".
Shame on me for forgetting about this movie and how good it was.
Wow... This movie had no right to be this good neither did it deserve to be thrown straight to DVD. H5 is a detective flick with cenobites inserted in it for style and eerie atmosphere. The story takes us on a journey of one man's personal hell, utilizing a much more psychological approach than the prior films, it unravels as a dark and moody thriller with most of the…
Call me crazy but I like this one nearly as much as the original.
Hellraiser movies have this habit of falling into the popular patterns of film at the time, they represent the essence of a certain kind of movie. This is the first Hellraiser of the second millennium and it falls squarely within that gritty, sleazy atmosphere that was popular around the turn of the century with movies like Seven, The Bone Collector, 8mm, End of Days, etc. etc. I remember Inferno receiving its fair of criticism and hate around the time of its release but it has aged quite well. Looking back, now that we are thirteen years on, this is an interesting crime thriller.
In fact, this…
At this point I don't expect anything from the Hellraiser series anymore 😅
Nevertheless, it should be noted that I liked this movie a little more than the previous part. Pinhead has a screentime for like 2 minutes, but he's no longer the annoying big talker who babbles all the time like in Bloodline.
Part 5 starts the never ending string of DTV sequels which of course I love. Really, none of them are THAT bad. This one is really dark and I love that. I think if it had focused a bit more on the hellish imagery and a bit less on the sporadic and occasionally annoying neo-noir story it would have been much better. As it is, it’s still pretty fun and Craig Sheffer plays an awful human being surprisingly well given that the only things I really know him from are Nightbreed and One Tree Hill (which I loved because NC).
There’s a serious lack of Pinhead in this, but that’s an issue with all the sequels from here out so it’s a bit of a moot point I guess. Definitely worth checking out if you want a solid horror story with some Cenobites sprinkled on top.
Director Scott Derrickson insists that this film was originally written as a Hellraiser sequel, but I don't believe him. Hellraiser Inferno is very obviously a psychological horror film reconfigured as a Hellraiser sequel, and this is clear because all the common series elements feel so ancillary to the central plot, aswell as being entirely at odds with the lore of the previous films. That being said, this is something of an interesting journey in its own right as we follow a sleazy police detective on the trail of a murderer calling himself The Engineer. It's essentially a slow burn character study, with the central character completing a measured descent into madness. Think somewhere between Seven and Angel Heart. The film…
I absolutely loved the Lynch/Silent Hill Vibes in this although the film was hard to get through imo bc the main character is so god damn unlikeable. He gets everything he deserves though! We love to see it.
Good evening and welcome fellow Children of Chaos.
My favorite Hellraiser movie and I don't care.
Other than the Mc's narration this is exactly what I want in horror anymore. Procedural, weird, mysterious, and with an element of personal hell.
Also, I do like seeing a dude get ripped apart by chains, but at this point that does not even get me at half mast anymore. So I need something a little more than Hollywood visceral anymore.
I would love to see what this movie would have looked like without the shoehorned in Cenobite stuff honestly. And shoehorned it is, being Hellraiser is the weakest part of the movie. I mean I'd love to see Cooper be the Engineer without…
