This movie is so much better
than it has any right to be.
I used to think that how gorgeous and fun and sexy this was undermined or contradicted its satirical ideas (even though there are still obviously pointed moments in it like that detail of Tom throwing the homeless man off the subway car) but in actuality it's just being more honest about the surface pleasure and appeal that have been intentionally built into capitalism. It's an 80s MTV coming-of-age teen sex comedy with imagery so lyrical and a soundscape so lush (Tangerine Dream's follow-up to Michael Mann's Thief 🐐) it's hard to imagine a world where any of us let alone our perfect baby boy/preppy rich kid business major Joel Goodson here wouldn't be completely seduced by the corrupt adult world…

that scene on the train where Tom Cruise gets his ass grabbed while In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins played was when I realized that I wasn’t watching a movie, i was watching a film.

Way darker than I remembered, revisiting this after YEARS had me leaning on the edge of my seat just waiting for something terrible to happen in each scene... like some coming of age teen sex comedy very specific Michael Mann vibes soaked in an ominous dread courtesy of the slammin’ Tangerine Dream score, excellent direction/editing, and fantastic turns from De Mornay and Cruise.
Plus Joey Pants.
It’s a shame this gets remembered for the old time rock n roll scene when the In the Air Tonight train car sex scene pisses all over it.

Potentially, this is Tom Cruise's second best film in his entire career, though not necessarily his best performance. Risky Business found, with surprising easiness, its pop-culture status among modern viewers. 75% of that popularity image has Tom Cruise dancing to the beat of "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band, a scene which barely represents the entire dark atmosphere of this teen drama.
