Conceptually, this is a bit thin compared to Clerks, especially with the mirrored struggle of the two protagonists, but damn, 90s Jason Lee was unstoppable. He's a perfect fit for Kevin Smith's tortured adolescence and geeky irony. The rest of the cast is great too. As an encapsulation of mall culture and stunted maturity, Mallrats does the job just fine.

Kevin Smith is a director that I will always like. His work may not be amazing but he can still make a good film.
This is just a simple film about love and comic books. What else do you need.
I don't know what to tell you, man. I sort of like this. It's not good but I like it. I think it's beautiful how quickly and completely Smith spent his Clerks cache. In retrospect it's almost hard to believe that this is what turned everybody on him. It's not that different than Clerks. Sure, it's worse, but you're remembering the feeling of being 15 more than you're remembering the reality of Clerks. Can't speak for critics of the mid-90s, who didn't even have the excuse of growing up with it. And I wouldn't speak for them, even if I could.
Watched the Arrow Video blu-ray with an intro from Kevin Smith. He's a charming guy who seems sincerely excited by his career. Good for him.
After 15 years of apostasy, I thought it might be fun to try to pivot back to being a Kevin Smith fan. That was the plan, at least, but it has been complicated by the stone cold fact that this movie is really not very good. However, I will say that it is easy to watch and has alright vibes. Nice to see Jay and Silent Bob doing gags 'n' stunts.
Smith favours simple compositions and long, unbroken takes, like Chaplin. The movie looks terrible, of course, but the fact that it was shot on 35mm film means it still looks a thousand times better than Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Jeremy London is no Brian O'Halloran, and Jason Lee…
