A curmudgeonly instructor at a New England prep school is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually, he forms an unlikely bond with one of them — a damaged, brainy troublemaker — and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam.

Lovely slice of life story from Alexander Payne. Simple, humble, and elegant reminder that everyone we encounter is fighting their own battles, and that we rarely know what they are. I found this to be a gentle ode to compassion, very well acted, and written and directed with quiet wisdom. Highly recommended.
What I find fascinating about The Holdovers isn’t so much the staggering breakthrough Dominic Sessa performance or Paul Giamatti loudly reminding us he’s one of the greatest to grace the screen or even Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s effortless command of every scene— these aspects are obvious, they are the stainless steel cogs that ensure The Holdovers runs smoothly. What I find fascinating is why so many audiences have accepted the film’s warm embrace— it’s a tangible reminder that we, as living human beings, all crave and deserve love.
Romantic love, platonic love, familial love. That sense of belonging never erodes and through its many moving parts, The Holdovers reminds us of that. Brilliant stuff.
