"I paid Houdini three hundred dollars for that trick."
One of the rare DC animated flicks that I never saw coming, Sam Liu's Batman: Gotham by Gaslight was one of those movies that, while I had a slight interest in seeing, I knew would be another generic and run-of-the-mill superhero movie that doesn't offer anything special to the lore of the characters, nor does it offer anything kinda surprising. Funny enough, the film is quite the opposite of that and offers a new tale and has something special going for it.
Helmed by the man who has been putting out nearly every release from DC, Sam Liu handles Gotham by Gaslight really well. I know it's based on the…
A darker, period piece Batman film that takes the serial killer approach. The villain is also uhhhh Jack The Ripper…. Count me all the way in!!!
I loved how brutal, unforgiving and darker this Batman film got. Arguably one of my favorites so far. Sure the storyline apart from the mystery behind Jack the Ripper was a little lacking, and the reveal towards the end wasn’t that amazing, but it still has one of the best aesthetics to a Batman film I’ve seen.
This one was good. It's an incredibly unique stand-alone DC story in both setting and plot turns. The mystery of who Jack the Ripper is was worthy of the Holmes-ian style caper that Batman had to unravel, and is likely the best part about the film. There's a few memorable moments but it did hit rank a bit low on both the action level and threat Batman encounters. It's appropriate for the film and setting, sure, but the villain here just isn't on the level of the Joker or many others on the suspense created by the encounters between protagonist and antagonist. In short the unique setting, mood and mystery were great, but there are many more better looking, more…

“Wayne promised this world's fair would be a paradise of cleanliness and light. But what does a light in the darkness do? It draws flies. Vile, unclean like you”
With a premise as interesting as Gotham by Gaslight, it might come as a surprise to say that the film itself, regardless of setting, is dull, boring, and unfortunately void of any intrigue. It has its moments, but all this entry does is simply place a well know serial killer into the mix, and ultimately does very little with the reasoning why. It’s both ridiculous and rather tedious throughout. Zero character development, zero level of explanation or immersion. All in all, quite simply a poor and disappointing entry.

This movie is honestly amazing. I love how it’s seamlessly set in the Victorian age without feeling forced. It's the first time I've seen Dickie, Jason, and Tim together in a film. Some characters are reintroduced subtly, maintaining their originality while making tweaks. Cyrus Gold makes an appearance here. For those who don’t know, he’s the guy who died and was resurrected fifty years later as Solomon Grundy. Sam Liu has blended DC's most iconic characters into a period drama, with the story unfolding gradually. Trust me, Gotham by Gaslight features one of the most shocking twists I’ve ever seen. I don’t want to spoil it, but the Ripper is elusive, right in front of you and among you.

I want even more of Batman solving famous murder cases from history please... this was lots of fun.
The first forty-five minutes of this are super fun historical fiction. I like seeing Batman get to show off his detective skills and the content is suitably dark and reflective given the subject matter. I also enjoyed the 19th century animation aesthetic. For me the ending was a bit generic and I think might have benefited from greater use of restraint but overall this is a solid storyline that I would consider revisiting.
Decent to good.
An adult edging little boys to fight batman.. seriously
Nun cursing.. Had to rewind to make sure my ears heard right.
Liked how they fit Jack the Ripper in the story.
Good animation

I detest they used the same style of animation of The Batman, first because I do not like it and second because that series was a disappointment for the character.
Personally I found it enjoyable, I'm surprised they decided to make an animated film about a story so little known. In general, the film follows the same quality line that the other DC Animation films have followed in recent years; Basic entertainment, nothing memorable, but for fans and of Batman is a good option.
This was so much fun actually! I love the idea behind these elseworld set of animated films. Very interesting take on Batman with a fun twist to it. Animation was overall good though some character models I didn't like. The fighting is great though and just the style of it all hard carries it for me. Voice cast worked for me as well including Batman (my main complaint about Year one). The ending I kind of saw coming but still enjoyed nonetheless. Idk is this one kind of slept on? Am i a dc animation fan now?
