Abyssal Dragon 「
Summary[]
After the monastery is a dead end, the Hero Party decide to focus on folktales and oral traditions from older settlements instead. The Hero Party then travel to another village where they learn from the barkeep of the ruins of a Unified Empire city that contain a cathedral. The party then defeat an Abyssal Dragon together in order to access the cathedral ruins.
Plot Details[]
After scouring the library of the monastery, the Hero Party then asks the monastery father if he has any information on the Monument of the Goddess, but unfortunately, he doesn't possess any additional knowledge beyond the library's resources.
The Hero Party then leave the monastery and camp outside for the night. Himmel proposes that they travel to older settlements to learn from their folktales and oral traditions. Eisen and Himmel begin to joke about the legwork necessary for this, with Heiter admonishing the two for being muscle-heads once again. Frieren adds that Himmel and Eisen aren't wrong about needing stamina for traversing the Northern Plateau. Settlements in the Northern Plateau will often utilize difficult terrain in order to make them hard to reach, such as on top of cliffs, islands in the middle of lakes, and even inside caves. Frieren asks whether or not that is typical for dwarves, but Eisen refutes that, as despite dwarves being associated with the mining and smithing professions, they will still live on the surface. Himmel then motivates Heiter by reminding him of all the local brews he can try, which immediately fires Heiter up and brings up a round of ribbing from the party.
The Hero Party then proceed to travel to another village. While the villagers are initially unable to help, Heiter gets spectacularly drunk while 'questioning' the barkeep in the tavern. The barkeep at first says he knows nothing, but as Himmel drags Heiter out at closing, the barkeep recalls a band of adventurers that were once stationed in the village who talked about the ruins of a city from the Unified Empire that they'd discovered. The ruins had a cathedral in the center, which could potentially provide the party with information. When Frieren and Himmel wonder whether the city, and the cathedral in particular, have already been looted by the adventurers, the barkeep reassures them that those adventurers never returned from their expedition.
The next day the Hero Party travels to the ruins of the ancient city. Heiter is extremely hungover, but Himmel confidently says that he'll be fine when the time comes. Himmel asks Frieren whether she detects any magic, but she points to the bell tower on the cathedral, where an abyssal dragon—the most powerful species of dragon—is perched. As soon as the abyssal dragon detects them, it sends a powerful blast in their direction. Frieren uses basic defensive magic to block the attack. While she wants the party to retreat, Himmel says that he has a plan. He then strategizes with the rest of the party, and they summarily defeat the dragon. In the aftermath, while the celebrate defeating the abyssal dragon and Heiter heals Himmel, Frieren nostalgically reflects on the post battle celebrations and tells the party that they haven't changed. Himmel tells her that while that is true, he thinks that she has changed, which Frieren confirms by sharing with him that she has an apprentice.
They then go inside the cathedral to explore, only for Frieren to immediately be eaten by a mimic.
