- ―Roz revealing herself to be an employee of MERC
The Monstropolis Energy Regulatory Commission (or MERC for short) is an organization in the Disney/Pixar animated series Monsters at Work. It is a government branch of Monstropolis that is in charge of accrediting and regulating all of the energy companies within Monstropolis.
Appearance[]
Monsters at Work[]
MERC is first mentioned in "The Cover Up" where after Tylor Tuskmon and Duncan P. Anderson inadvertently cause a power outage, MERC sends an investigator who works for them, Argus Blinks, to the company in order to find out what caused the outage. Blinks has been working under MERC for 2 decades without a single day off. Blinks soon finds out that MIFT is responsible for the outage but after Tylor and Duncan put him into a vacation door where their boss, Fritz was using and after 2 weeks, Argus decides to simply write up the company and goes back to MERC.
MERC is mentioned again in the Season 1 finale "It's Laughter They're After", where Roz, who is revealed to be a MERC representative, comes to M.I. to warn Mike and Sulley that the commission is considering discontinuing Laugh Energy due to low quotas. She gives the duo 24 hours to meet the quota in order for Monsters, Inc. to continue thriving.
MERC Agents finally appear in the Season 2 finale "Powerless", where due to some difficulties befalling Monsters, Inc. that causes them to be unable to meet the energy needs of Monstropolis, MERC comes to shut the place down and arrests Mike and Sulley and brings them to MERC Headquarters where Roz gives them an excessive amount of paperwork that makes M.I. gives up the energy requirement needs to their competitor Fear Co.. It is later revealed that MERC was well aware that Fear Co. CEO Johnny Worthington III and Mike and Sulley's old enemy Randall Boggs were the ones responsible for Monsters, Inc.'s mishaps as Johnny's personal assistant, Chet Alexander, was revealed to be a mole for MERC and informed them of Johnny's scheme. MERC then arrests Johnny and Randall for their crimes, though Randall later escapes. At MERC HQ, Roz was informing the press about how they will try and capture Randall, with Duncan hijacking the podium and being dragged off by some of the MERC officers.
Trivia[]
- MERC seems to be the show's equivalent of the Child Detection Agency from Monsters, Inc.
