Monsters, Inc. Run was a mobile game developed by Get Set Games and published by Disney Interactive Studios. It was an auto-run game based on the 2001 Disney/Pixar animated feature film, Monsters, Inc. and was released in tie-in with the 3D re-release of the original film on December 19, 2012.
The game was updated on June 10, 2013 in tie-in with the 2013 prequel film, Monsters University, adding levels inspired by the film itself, eleven days before the film was released and the icon was updated to promote the theatrical release of the film. It was removed from the App Store on August 27, 2014.
Gameplay[]
Presented in the style of an auto-runner game, players took control of two characters - consisting of a standard monster and a bigger monster - where the player's monster moved automatically unlike in any other typical platform game where players control their character manually. Throught the game, the player must tap on the screen so their monster can jump to collect coins to buy stuff (especially coins with higher values) or speed boosts which can increase the player's speed. In addition to collecting coins, players were also able to certain power-ups which could provide an advantage such boosts, throwing projectiles at enemies, or other power-ups the player would find along the way as well as other elements encountered throughout the game. In addition to these, power-ups with a monster icon surrounded by a blue background allowed the player to temporarily change their standard monster (such as Mike) to a bigger one (such as Sulley), allowing the player to smash through blocks that a normal monster could not smash through.
Enemies would occasionally appear on screen where they were seen in various parts throughout the game which the player could jump on to defeat them and earn points. Should the player touch an enemy, it could cause the player to fall down to a lower platform below their monster or even fall into a bottomless pit, making it an obstacle for players to encounter. If the player falls into a bottomless pit, they would receive the option to save themself using a save device to bring them back in the game; should the player forfeit the offer, it caused the player's gameplay to end. If the player has equipped a save device for their gameplay and if the player falls into the bottomless pit, the save device is automatically activated, bringing the player back on the level.
Aside from the elements mentioned above, three toys which represent Boo's toys were also scattered throughout the game - consisting of a sock, a teddy bear, and a ball respecitvely appearing in several scenes throughout the levels. Collecting these toys were required to improve the players' score to earn stars as well. The number of stars earned throughout the end of each level depend on how many points the player earned through collecting coins (especially those with a higher value), defeating enemies, popping balloons, smashing through blocks and walls, or collecting all three of Boo's toys to earn points as well. Stars were also required to unlock levels where the player must earn at least three of them in order to unlock.
Levels[]
The first level the player would start with was the Monstropolis Rooftops levels. Levels were part of story mode consisting of a story of Mike and Sulley's goals to stop Randall and rescue Boo. The number of stars earned throughout the level were obtained from a number of points the player obtained throughout gameplay which were required to unlock new levels in order to play them where players had to replay previously-unlocked levels to earn three stars. Alternatively, the level packs were unlockable through in-game currencies or real-world money
