Margaret Gesner[2] (or simply the Librarian) is a character from the 2013 Disney/Pixar animated feature film Monsters University. She is a librarian who works at Monsters University's library.
Background[]
Personality[]
Margaret is an elderly female monster who works at Monsters University. She is shown to be a zero-tolerant to those who cause any disturbance in her library such as those who make noise. Those who are caught within the library will be sent out of the library being tossed into a river outside of the library. When angry, Margaret shouts, "Quiet!" albeit in a eerie, whispering tone.
Physical Appearance[]
Margaret is a massive mollusk-like monster - specifically resembling that of a cephalopod having gray skin all around her body, eight large tentacles, gray hair, a large black dress, and a pair of eyeglasses. While she seems to be small, she is shown to be of a massive gigantic size of the building where she works at when she is standing.
Appearances[]
Monsters University[]
Margaret serves as one of the subjects in the "Avoid the Parent" challenge during the Scare Games where her reaction to noise reflects to emulate the danger of parents of how a participator must get along without getting caught. Any team member who is caught by the Librarian is thrown out of her library, resulting in their team being disqualified during the challenge.
When Oozma Kappa participates during the event, the team accidentally makes a creak in one of the floorboards within the library, which Margaret notices the commotion. To avoid getting caught, the team distracts and confuses Margaret, while Squishy takes the flag without getting noticed during the challenge. Just as Oozma Kappa successfully escapes from the library without getting caught, this results in Oozma Kappa's victory as Slugma Slugma Kappa becomes disqualified during the challenge where Margaret throws them into the river. She makes no further appearances after that.

Trivia[]
- Margaret has a striking resemblance to Ursula from the 1989 Disney animated feature film, The Little Mermaid.
- Coincidentally, while The Little Mermaid was cancelled for a theatrical 3D release due to underperformances of Disney 3D re-releases (although it had a limited re-release at certain theaters in September to October 2013), the 3D version itself was released on Blu-ray formats on October 1, 2013 with Monsters University being released on home media on October 29 of that same year.
- While her real name is not mentioned in the film itself, the name "Margaret Gesner" has been used in the Monsters University Fearbook, a book inspired by the prequel itself.
- Margaret was Marcia Wallace's only role in a Pixar production before her death on October 25, 2013.
- Marcia was at one point considered to voice Mrs. Potato Head in Toy Story 2, along with several other actresses, which was eventually given to the late Estelle Harris.
