Background[]
Gazelle is very popular in the world of Zootopia, having many fans, which include Judy Hopps, Clawhauser, and surprisingly even the normally gruff and hard to impress Chief Bogo. Her importance and popularity stem from the fact that she is very socially-minded and is all about acceptance and equality for all.[1]
Development[]
Shakira's involvement with the film begun when the directors met her around 2013. She fell in love with the idea and the central message.[1]
Personality[]
Gazelle is liked by almost all the citizens of Zootopia given her status as a famous pop star. Despite being a pop idol, Gazelle doesn't see herself as above anyone else, she is humble and kind.
Like Judy, Gazelle cares for equality and loves Zootopia because she believes it is a place where animals are equals regardless of whether they are predators or prey, something that she's very passionate about. Her upbeat and accepting nature shows no limits to how far she thinks of others based on species. She even held a peace rally when the conflicts between predator and prey arose, her peaceful nature shows how level-headed she is in unfairness situations, such as prejudice. All of her dancers are also shown to be predators, namely tigers, holding true to her values. This also extended to non-mammals, such as Gary De'Snake, despite knowing he sent the guests of the Zootiental Gala into panic; but he only did so on accident.
Despite her otherwise peaceful nature, Gazelle has been shown to have her limits of patience. For example, she held a grudge against the Zebros for pushing past one of her backup dancers during an evacuation at the Lynxleys' gala event in Tundratown, as it is exemplified by her swearing vengeance on the Zebros while evacuating the gala, and willingly engaging in physical altercations with them to hold off the ZPD in a bid to help Judy, Gary and Pawbert make their way to the wall at the Burning Mammal Festival. This shows that, regardless of her viewpoints on violence, she is not afraid to use force when infuriated and will do so to protect or avenge those close to her.
Physical appearance[]
Gazelle, as her name obviously implies, is a gazelle with a slender figure, amber fur with a beige underside going up to her throat and muzzle. She has long, curving dark gray horns and light brown eyes. She has long, wavy locks of blonde hair that go over half her face.
Given her status as a pop idol, Gazelle wears a sparkling red skirt, crop top, and shoes. Her skirt also has a silver belt around it.
In the Zootopia+ segment "So You Think You Can Prance", Gazelle wears a silver, sleeveless, shimmering mini dress, silver shoes, metallic eye shadow, and her eyes appear gray instead of the original brown.
Appearances[]
Zootopia[]
Gazelle is a pop singer/songwriter, choreographer, and was first introduced singing her song "Try Everything", on Judy Hopps' playlist as she is traveling to Zootopia, then at the end, where she was seen as a recording on a jumbo-tron TV introducing herself and saying "Welcome to Zootopia". She is later featured on a phone app where the user can tag their face on a tiger backup dancer performing next to Gazelle, which Clawhauser and Chief Bogo are fans of.
Later on, as fear and discrimination against predators take hold in Zootopia for fear of them going savage, Gazelle holds a peaceful protest and publicly asks for the harmonious Zootopia she loves and cherishes to be restored, with many refusing to join.
During the end credits, Gazelle, flanked by four dancing tigers, holds a concert in the middle of town square for all of Zootopia, including those incarcerated (though they all dance to it except for Bellwether and Lionheart).
Once Upon a Studio[]
Gazelle returns alongside the rest of Zootopia inhabitants at the Disney Animation Studio for a group photo with all the characters from the previous films to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the studio and The Walt Disney Company's founding in 1923 by Walter Elias Disney and his brother Roy Oliver Disney.
In a deleted scene, Gazelle is seen with Daisy Duck, Ariel, Georgette, Isabela Madrigal, Morph, and Madame Medusa in the ladies' room getting ready for the photo, with Gazelle chalking up her horns, before Sergeant Calhoun interrupts them to hurry up before it gets late.[2] In the final product, she joins the rest of the Disney characters of singing "When You Wish Upon a Star" as the group photo is successfully taken.
Zootopia 2[]
Gazelle returned in the sequel Zootopia 2, this time in a slightly larger role than in previous films. She performs a new song, "Zoo", at the Lynxleys' gala event in Tundratown, which is upstaged by Gary's attempts to steal Ebenezer Lynxley's journal (thanks in no small part to one of the Zebros shoving aside one of her backup dancers), before being forced to evacuate the building. She is then seen again at the Burning Mammal festival where she and her backup dancers are in a tent preparing to perform, before being interrupted by Judy, Gary and Pawbert, and willingly helps them escape pursuit from the ZPD (with the Zebros among them), by fighting off their pursuers. She then reappears at the end of the film performing "Zoo".
Others appearances[]
Gazelle and her tiger dancers appear during the end credits of the Zootopia entry of the As Told by Emoji short series.

Disney Heroes: Battle Mode[]
- “Gazelle is a kind, optimistic performer and passionate activist. Through her music, dance and her words, she inspires others, promotes unity, and encourages everyone to work together and support one another.”
- ―Gazelle's in-game Hero description.
Gazelle in Disney Heroes: Battle Mode.
Gazelle is a playable character in Disney Heroes: Battle Mode. Introduced in Update 7.6., Gazelle is a Back-Line Support role hero on the Yellow Team. Gazelle's skills are: "Hip Sway", "Echo Peace", "True Melody", "Shimmer Skirt", and "Gilded Bracelets". These skills allow Gazelle to (in the order):
- "Hip Sway":
- Passive: Every time an ally is below 50% HP, Gazelle grants 5 Momentum stacks to them with her Basic Attacks.
- Active: Gazelle performs a dance until she runs out of energy, shaking her hips to the side. While dancing, Gazelle and her allies gain an HP Shield every second. Additionally, all allies take a percent less damage from all sources.
- "Echo Peace": Gazelle speaks through her handheld speaker, inspiring her team and calling for peace, Healing all allies for some HP and dealing Normal Damage for a few seconds to all enemies. If an ally received some debuffs in the last few seconds, Gazelle also Overloads that ally for a few seconds. Overloaded allies have their Skill Levels increased by a certain amount.
- "True Melody": Gazelle sings passionately into her microphone, projecting a powerful note that sends a shockwave through the battlefield, Knocking Back and dealing Normal Damage to all enemies. After the Knockback, enemies are Charmed for a few seconds. If the enemy is Immune to Charm, they are instead Shattered for a few seconds.
- "Shimmer Skirt": After "Hip Sway" ally's Shield breaks, that ally gains Reality and Armor for a few seconds. When an ally falls down to a percent of HP, Gazelle sacrifices a percent of her Max HP to Heal an ally for some HP. This Heal is increased by a percent per Momentum stack on that ally. If Gazelle's health falls below a percent of HP during this sacrifice, she becomes Berserk for a few seconds. Gazelle can provide HP this way once every few seconds.
- "Gilded Bracelets": The Charm on "True Melody" will now target the enemies with the highest Skill Power. Additionally, enemies Charmed this way Heal Gazelle's ally with the lowest HP percentage for some HP with their basic attacks. For every few disables applied to allies, Gazelle increases her Max HP, up to a maximum. For every stackable debuff applied to allies, Gazelle converts them into Momentum Stacks. If the Momentum Stacks are already maxed, Gazelle will instead make allies Immune to Scare for a few seconds. Additionally, Gazelle increases her Reality, up to a maximum.
Gazelle has friendship campaigns with Clawhauser and Powerline.

Trivia[]
- Gazelle is one of the few characters to actually wear shoes.
- Ironically, her voice actress (famous pop singer, Shakira) doesn't normally like wearing shoes, at least for when she's performing.
- Gazelle is one of the Zootopia characters to have their names play on their species. The others are Finnick, Flash Slothmore, Mayor Lionheart, Yax, Emmitt Otterton, his wife, Duke Weaselton, Peter Moosebridge, Doug Ramses, and Dr. Badger.
- Gazelle is currently the only Zootopia character to have the same actor in multiple versions of the movie, as Shakira voiced Gazelle in the English and both Spanish dubs (Latin America and Spain) of the movie.
- However, there is no official Spanish version of her song "Try Everything", so even in said dubs, the song stays in English.
- The "Dancing With Gazelle" app seen in the film was available on Disney websites.
- Gazelle is the only gazelle seen in the film.
- Despite being female, Gazelle has the long horns of a male gazelle (female gazelles in real life have short horns).
- Rich Moore confirmed that Gazelle is her real name, as opposed to a stage name.[3]
- She is a model for Preyda and appears on the covers of various magazines, such as Vanity Fur.
- In 2020, Gazelle brought back attention as her actress Shakira wore a very similar outfit as her for the Halftime Show of the Super Bowl LIV.[4]
- Given how her personal self is considerably different from her public image as a pop star, Gazelle effectively appears to be a foil of Dawn Bellwether, with both ladies sharing the same purpose of giving to the citizens of Zootopia their wants and needs with their skills. Although Bellwether is the less noted one between the two, her arrogance as a prey supremacist is still very high, with no sort of genuine concern for others being displayed by herself. Meanwhile, as much of a renowned pop singer Gazelle was, she doesn't let fame get into her head, as proven when she spoke out against the divide between the predators and preys in the city with her back-up tiger dancers, showcasing her sense of humility and deep care for others.
