Hathi, Jr. is a young elephant, who appears in The Jungle Book and its sequel The Jungle Book 2. He is the son of Colonel Hathi and Winifred and Mowgli's friend.
Background[]
Hathi, Jr. is the only child in the herd, but despite that (and the only one with a full head of hair), his knowledge of military drills, regulations, and terminology is very impressive, and he marches with the heard in the back of the line. His parents often refer to him as "Son".
He's very friendly, and he becomes friends with Mowgli very quickly, and he even tells him that when he grows up, he's going to be a Colonel just like his father. He cares deeply for Mowgli's safety to the point of convincing his father to join in the search for him when he runs away. He also has a tendency to be left behind, as Hathi later notes that he has grabbed him and scolded him several times about it.
Appearances[]
The Jungle Book[]
Hathi, Jr. appears as part of the Jungle Patrol, which is led by his father. The Jungle Patrol is currently on a cross-country march, with periodic sounding off and drilling. During one of them, he meets Mowgli, and when Mowgli asks if he can join in, Hathi, Jr. agrees, but instructs Mowgli not to talk in ranks, because it's against regulations. During the march, Mowgli tries to copy everything Hathi, Jr. is doing, while learning about military rules and orders. Hathi, Jr. then participates in an inspection, and he's reminded by his father to keep his heels together.
After the rest of the herd leaves to continue their march, Winifred tells Hathi that he just forgot their son, and he sees him talking to Mowgli after being left behind. Hathi, Jr. tells Mowgli that when he grows up, he's going to be a Colonel just like his father. Hathi grabs him and scolds him, but the rest of the herd crashes into them, and Hathi, Jr. tells his father he forgot to say "Halt!"
He is later seen marching with the herd when Bagheera stops the herd and asks for help in finding Mowgli after he ran away. Hathi refuses, and is quickly reprimanded by his wife, Winifred. She asks him how he would feel if their own son was lost. Hathi claimed that it was an entirely different matter, but Winifred tells him that Mowgli is no different from their own son, and she tells him to help find him or she's taking over command. Hathi is shocked, and he says that a female leading his herd is totally preposterous. Hathi, Jr. then pleads with his father, telling him that he and Mowgli are friends, and he'll get hurt if they don't find him. This results in his father giving in, and he forms a search party, and the herd proceeds to search for Mowgli.
The Jungle Book 2[]
Hathi, Jr. appears at the beginning, where his father and the other elephants are stopping Baloo from going to the Man Village. Baloo escapes the elephants, but sees Hathi, Jr. looking at him. Baloo tells Hathi, Jr. that he wants to see Mowgli. Hathi, Jr. admits that he also misses Mowgli and points the way to the Man Village. Hathi, Jr. is later seen stampeding with his father and the other elephants into a cave as Man was in the jungle.
House of Mouse[]
Hathi, Jr. was seen during the opening song alongside his father and other characters from the film.
Once Upon a Studio[]
In the short, Hathi, Jr. joins other Disney characters to take a group photo outside of Walt Disney Animation Studios to celebrate the studio's 100th anniversary.
When all the characters were disappointed at the group photo being ruined, Hathi, Jr. joins in, using his trunk, on playing the beginning notes of "When You Wish Upon a Star" with Alan-A-Dale on his lute, Mirabel Madrigal on her accordion, and Scat Cat on his trumpet to lift everyone's spirits. Hathi, Jr. continued playing the song while he and the rest of the characters managed to take a perfect group photo.
