Politics
TIB contributes its expertise to committees and working groups and provides advice to policy-makers on domains such as AI, knowledge graphs, semantic technologies and open science, thus hands-on supporting the digitalisation of diverse industry sectors. Moreover, TIB actively supports the goals of Germany’s federal and state governments within the framework of the Pact for Research & Innovation, as well as initiatives such as the Excellence Strategy and the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI).
Our activities - a selection:
- Member of the German Council for Scientific Information Infrastructures (Professor Dr Sören Auer)
- Member of the “Open Science/Open Access” committee of experts of the State Ministry of Science and Cultural Affairs of Saxony (Professor Dr Sören Auer)
- German Council of Science and Humanities: evaluation of the higher education system in the Federal State of Brandenburg
- Consultation of the High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence in the German Bundestag
- Collaboration in Leibniz Strategy Forums such as Open Science, Technological Sovereignty, and Digital Transformation
- Science meets Parliament: participation in formats such as Leibniz in the Bundestag and Leibniz in the State Parliament of Lower Saxony
- Participation in delegations, delegation visits (Deutscher Frühling in Estonia) and ministerial tours (Great Britain, Finland and Estonia) for the development and strengthening of collaboration at home and abroad
- Participation in series of events organised by the Leibniz Association and various ministries
Library community
TIB uses its leading role in the library community to actively support the digital transformation of the information infrastructure. Our initiation and development of open digital formats creates platforms for discourse with other stakeholders in society. Moreover, TIB is constantly developing its synergies within the Leibniz Association & with non-university institutions.
The TIB's extensive and heterogeneous data stock and the needs of users give rise to application-related research questions that are being researched by the VA in the areas of digital libraries, research data and media archives and databases.

- Involvement and active participation in consortia, alliances, networks and committees
- Establishment of new formats such as #vBIB and the Open Science Festival
- Organisation of Open-Access-Tage (Open Access Days) and the 111. BiblioCon, as well as involvement in open-access.network
- Awards: “Library of the Year”, Open Library Badge, the TOTAL E-QUALITY award for equal opportunities and diversity, “Digitaler Ort Niedersachsen” (Digital Place Lower Saxony) for various projects
- Development and provision of infrastructure services such as DataCite, TIB DOI Consortium and the ORCID Germany Consortium for the scientific community
- Involvement in “Agilität in Bibliotheken” (Agility in libraries)
Science
TIB is considered one of the most influential scientific instances both in Lower Saxony and Germany-wide. Given this influential position, TIB hosts many international conferences, specialist forums and workshops, providing opportunities for networking and information sharing within the scientific community all over Germany and Europe.

Society
TIB maintains an intensive and continuous dialogue with society in the context of current challenges, such as the digital transformation in science and other areas. TIB conducts intensive dialogue work with members of the society, enables citizens to participate in citizen science projects and presents its research activities at public and international exhibitions. TIB is tackling big social challenges by utilizing its research results, acquired knowledge and ideas.

Business and industry
Advancing the digitalisation in diverse domains,TIB fosters research and industry collaboration at regional, national, European and international levels.This is achieved by project acquisition, development of innovative digital tools, infrastructures and platforms, while also offering counselling and coaching to promote sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship. Moreover, TIB and the L3S Research Center of LUH combine research and technology competencies in the domains of big data analytics, machine learning and semantics, expanding TIB’s project portfolio and provision of scientific and technical services for third parties.
