Get Barreled (also known as Sandbagging, A Quick Affair, Full Tilt Affair, 5 on 5, Walk This Way, and Walk Around, Running on Empty) is an accuracy challenge that originated in Survivor: Nicaragua, was modified for a Duel in South Pacific, and further modified as an individual challenge in Ghost Island.

Rules[]

Each tribe must race to retrieve ten barrels from a field and roll them back to a designated platform where the barrels must be placed upright. Once all the barrels are in place, one person at a time will attempt to land sandbags onto the top of the barrels. The first tribe to land a sandbag on each barrel would win the challenge.

The individual variant excludes the barrel retrieval, with the first person to land a sandbag on each of the designated set of barrels winning the challenge. Since Ghost Island, contestants had to complete an obstacle course before reaching the final portion of the challenge, which involves landing a single sandbag on a narrow target. In Winners at War, contestants had to land two sandbags on the narrow disc instead.

History[]

United States[]

The challenge debuted in Nicaragua as a combined Reward/Immunity Challenge. Espada initially took the lead in the sandbag-tossing portion, but a communications breakdown amongst its members allowed La Flor to catch up and win immunity, sending Espada to Tribal Council.

In South Pacific, the first stage of the challenge was eliminated to accommodate a Duel, with each person now simply having to land a sandbag on each of the ten crates. Christine Shields Markoski narrowly beat Mark Caruso 10-9, earning the right to remain at Redemption Island, and permanently eliminating Mark from the game.

In Ghost Island, the challenge was used as part of the Family Visit. The castaways had to go over and under a series of obstacles, while untying and grabbing a sandbag along the way, then attempt to land the sandbag on a narrow table. While the challenge started evenly between the castaways, it ultimately came down to Domenick Abbate and Sebastian Noel, with Sebastian winning reward.

In Island of the Idols, the challenge was again used as part of the family visit, where the castaways were tethered in pairs and had to race across a series of obstacles while collecting a sandbag along the way, with the first pair to land their sandbag on top of a narrow disc winning. In a tight race between all four pairs, the team of Janet Carbin and Tommy Sheehan managed to land their sandbag on the disc first to win reward.

In Winners at War, the challenge was used as the final five Immunity Challenge, where castaways had to retrieve a key while going over and under a series of obstacles. They would then use the key to untie two sandbags, which they had to land on a narrow disc. The challenge came down to a race between Ben Driebergen and Tony Vlachos to land their second sandbag, with Tony ultimately landing his first to win immunity.

In Survivor 42, the challenge was used as the final eight Reward Challenge. Starting in the water, castaways first went through a tunnel obstacle before untying knots to retrieve a stick with a sandbag on top. They would carry the sandbag with the stick, maneuvering it under a hitching post before crossing a seesaw balance beam. They will then place their stick in the hole in a narrow disc platform, onto which they will attempt to land their sandbag. The first contestant to land their sandbag wins. Though the contestants remained matched throughout, Lindsay Dolashewich was the first to land her sandbag.

In Survivor 46, the castaways had to complete an obstacle course before landing a sandbag on a narrow platform. Q Burdette won the challenge and the Applebee's feast that came with it. He infamously left out Liz Wilcox from the reward, prompting her to have a memorable meltdown.

Australia[]

Ahead of the Double Tribal Council in Brains v Brawn (2021), the challenge was used for individual reward and immunity. The tribes will work in pairs to finish an obstacle course before reaching a final station, where they will land two sandbags on their respective table. The first two members of each tribe to land their sandbags win immunity and a champagne reward. Both tribes decided to help their respective members get to the end, but it was Andrew Ucles and Wai Chim that pulled off the victory on Brawn, while Emmett Pugh and Rachel Downie won the challenge on Brains.

The challenge was used again in Brains v Brawn as the final six Reward Challenge. The contestants first raced into the water to grab a bundle of sticks, which they would fashion into a pole to retrieve a key atop a tall post. They would then use the key to unlock a box of sandbags. They must then wind up their spinning target so that the goal faces them. The first person to land five sandbags on their spinning target wins. While Hayley Leake and Flick Palmateer were the first to get their sandbags unlocked, it was Dani Beale whose keenness with hitting targets helped her to win the spa trip reward.

In Titans v Rebels, the challenge appeared ahead of the vote at the tenth Tribal Council. The Titans were given the opportunity to win not only individual immunity, but the exclusive right to vote that night. Each Titan had to build a rectangular frame out of blocks before attempting to throw sandbags through the frame to land them on their barrel. If their frame collapsed, it would have to be rebuilt before they continued. The first three Titans to land three sandbags would win; Aileen Chong, Kirby Bentley, and Feras Basal ended up winning the challenge, upsetting the majority's plan to split the vote between Aileen and Feras.

South Africa[]

The sandbag toss was used as the final stage of the tribal Immunity Challenge on Day 9 of Island of Secrets. After climbing to the top of a tower, two members of each tribe would throw and land sandbags on five crates. Sa'ula and Ta'alo held a strong lead over Laumei entering the sandbag toss and, despite Laumei making up ground and all three tribes having scored four sandbags at one point in the challenge, Sa'ula and Ta'alo emerged victorious in the challenge.
