Hands on a Hard Idol (also known as Hard Idol and Hand On an Idol) is a recurring Immunity Challenge that originated in Survivor: Borneo. Despite being retired from the American series in Survivor: All-Stars, it remains one of the most iconic challenges in franchise history.
Rules[]
Keeping one hand on the Tribal Immunity Idol at all times, contestants would have to keep their balance while standing on a small log. If at any point a contestant takes their hand off the Idol, falls off the log, or raises their foot, they would be eliminated from the challenge. The final player left holding onto the Idol would win.
History[]
United States[]
The challenge first appeared as the Final Immunity Challenge of Survivor: Borneo. Richard Hatch dropped out of the challenge first assuming both competitors would not vote him off. Kelly Wiglesworth ultimately outlasted Rudy Boesch to become the first winner of this challenge.
When it reappeared in Survivor: Africa, Ethan Zohn dropped out of the challenge first after 2 hours and 26 minutes when he lost his balance. After 3 hours and 20 minutes, Lex van den Berghe dropped out due to stomach pains, granting Kim Johnson immunity.
The challenge was again used in Survivor: Marquesas. When Neleh Dennis told Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien her shirt was falling down, Kathy tried to fix her shirt, causing her to lose her balance and drop out of the challenge. Straight away Vecepia Towery struck a deal with Neleh; Vecepia would lose the challenge intentionally if Neleh promised to take her to the Final Tribal Council. Neleh accepted the deal, winning immunity.
The challenge appeared four seasons later in Survivor: All-Stars. Jenna Lewis unknowingly lifted her foot off the platform first, resulting in her losing the challenge after two hours and twenty three minutes. Rob Mariano later tricked Amber Brkich into touching the Immunity Idol with her other hand, which meant she lost the challenge and Rob won the challenge after three hours and eleven minutes.
Australia[]
The iconic challenge appeared as the inaugural Final Immunity Challenge in Australian Survivor, where the challenge was spectated by the loved ones of the final three. In an epic challenge set against sea spray from crashing waves, Kristie Bennett did the impossible and outlasted Lee Carseldine to win her only Immunity Challenge, surprising the jury later that night at Tribal Council.
The challenge reappeared in Australian Survivor (2017), once again as the Final Immunity Challenge. Tara Pitt was the first person to drop out. After five hours, as night turned to dusk, Jericho Malabonga outlasted Peter Conte to clinch the victory.
The challenge appeared once again as the Final Immunity Challenge in Australian Survivor: All Stars. In a change from the previous format, the contestants would hold on to an individual Immunity Idol, rather than a shared idol. They would also keep their other hand on a handle from the sand. David Genat outlasted Moana Hope and Sharn Coombes to win the challenge, securing a seat in the Final Two and all but guaranteeing his victory at Final Tribal Council.
The challenge appeared as the final six Immunity Challenge in Heroes v Villains, where, instead of standing on flat footholds, the members of Fa'amolemole had to endure stepping on painful, narrow footsteps while keeping one hand on their idol at all times. Periodically, they will move their feet between the three footsteps. The challenge came down to a showdown between allies Gerry Geltch and Matt Sharp, who mutually agreed to continue the challenge with their front foot lifted. Gerry lost his balance, winning Matt his second Immunity Challenge.
France[]
South Africa[]
The challenge appeared as the Final Immunity Challenge of Immunity Island. After one hour, Anela Majozi, who had been struggling throughout the challenge, ultimately lost his balance and became the first person to fall out. Shortly thereafter, Chappies Chapman slipped off the posts, allowing Nicole Wilmans to pull off an upset victory against the season-long challenge beast and win her second individual Immunity Challenge.
United Kingdom[]
The challenge first appeared in the UK on Episode 12 of the 2001 series of the show as "Hands On". Every 30 minutes contestants had to step forward. The challenge was won by Richard Owen. Unlike most versions, Hands On was not the final immunity challenge.
This challenge appeared as the Final Immunity Challenge of the 2023 series of the show. It was won narrowly by Christopher Haul, who was about to drop seconds before Leilani Sen did so, after both held out for over five hours. Leilani received medical attention afterwards. The sheer length of the challenge meant that the final four had no break before going to Tribal Council.
