Information

Dragons (龍, Ryū) are immensely large and powerful beings made up of enormous amounts of mana; distinct from them are lesser dragons (竜, ryū), made up of a few different subtypes.[Note 1]

Information[]

In the days of the Witches, Dragons freely roamed the world in numbers. They lived in flocks everywhere around the world, and formed smaller communities or factions, which were led by their chosen Dragon representatives, who were renowned around the world. They acted very similarly to Spirit and Evil Spirits. However, unlike them, Dragons freely expanded their territory rather often. During the era of the first-generation Sword Saint Reid Astrea, however, most of them were slain by him,[1] pushing their species to the brink of extinction.

They were capable of speech and were rather intelligent beings. There are even instances of individual Dragons forming pacts and vows with humans, in order to create a world where both Dragon and men could coexist. According to the author, the models for Re:Zero's Dragons were taken from European dragons, though they do sport some pretty apparent differences. Just like the European dragons, they have large lizard-like bodies and sport a pair of wings, though there were instances of Dragons with two pairs of wings, such as Volcanica.

Additionally, some Dragons hunted and killed people for various reasons, oftentimes to secure new territory. In turn, humans came up with a title, referring to them as Blight Dragons (邪龍, Jyaryū). It is mentioned by Beatrice that this term is nothing more than a viewpoint of humans wronged by dragons, rather than a designated species name.[2] According to legend, Blight Dragons were all but exterminated by the first Sword Saint, Reid Astrea, four centuries ago. In the present, the only known Blight Dragon was the three-headed black Dragon Valgren, who was slain during the Subjugation of the Blight Dragon.

Some Dragons have shown the ability to create a certain special race related to Dragons with forms similar to humans called dragonkin. In the process of creating this special race, however, the Dragon loses most of its personality and capability of speech, and it enters a hibernation-like state of being where merely its consciousness and a certain amount of their power remains. This state is referred to as being a dragonhusk (竜殻, ryū kara), and as of yet, the only dragonhusks to be revealed were Valgren, Volcanica, and Mezoreia. In the case of the latter two, their speech was limited to a mere two sentences.

Types of Dragons[]

Dragon (龍 Ryū): The original type of dragons. They contain great power and are made up of enormous masses of mana.[3]

Re Zero Light Novel 13 1

Earth Dragon (地竜, Chiryū): Dragons created by Volcanica. Much like horses on earth, these wingless, land-based dragons are often domesticated to be used in menial labor such as transport or in warfare. They have varied body types and colors to suit different terrains, environmental conditions and jobs which makes them excellent to work with. All earth dragons are born with Wind Evasion, a species-based Divine Protection. Specific species types known include the Flanna species (フランナ種), the most numerous versatile species, the Eliq species (エイリーク種) or the Aires species (アイレス種), an earth dragon species living in cold environments, the Agaress species (アガレス種) or the Gyrus species (ガイラス種), an earth dragon species living in desert environments, and the Diana species (ダイアナ種), a prideful and relatively rare species. The Diana species is the original species from which all other earth dragons descend from.

Episode 51 Water Dragon

Water Dragon (水竜, Suiryū): A lesser species of dragon, like earth dragons. Water Dragons are aquatic creatures, with long serpentine bodies, with short stubby limbs. They have blue, slippery skin and have a head that resembles a dragon's. Their mouths are crowded by sharp fangs, and catfish-like whiskers extend from its snout. They are harder to domesticate than earth dragons, as one must be trained from the very day they hatch from their eggs in order to recognise someone as their master. All Water Dragons are born with a Divine Protection which protects them from the effects of the water.

Flying Dragon (飛竜, Hiryū): A lesser species of dragon, like earth dragons. They are nearly impossible to domesticate, though some people in the Vollachia Empire have found a means to do it. These dragons have been shown capable of surpassing the speed of sound. It is unknown if they are born with a Divine Protection.

Re Zero Volume 29 Inside Cover

Dragonkin (竜人): A rare race which possessed the ability to make emotional connections with the three kinds of lesser dragons until they mostly went extinct.[4] The dragonkin differed from other races related to humans at a basic level, meaning that they were not demi-humans.[5] After driving ten other races to extinction, they were nearly led to extinction as a result of their extreme pride. The race's only known survivor is Madelyn Eschart.[6]

Trivia[]

  • With her Authority of Lust, Capella Emerada Lugunica can transform herself and others into a black dragon form that does not appear to fall under any of the lesser dragon breeds.
    • According to Capella, she also has Dragon’s blood running through her veins. Said blood contains a powerful curse which she has shown to use on two individuals to incapacitate them. Whether this is synthetic or legitimate Dragon’s blood is unknown.
      • After having adapted to the blood, Subaru felt that the cursed Dragon's blood conveyed to him a message: to prove the Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica's dignity.[7]
  • The English loan word "dragon" (ドラゴン, doragon) is commonly used to refer to dragons by characters in the present. As loan words are foreign to the world of Re:Zero, it is not known how this word became a commonplace term or who spread it.
  • Despite having wings, according to Emilia’s observations of Volcanica, Dragons actually use magic energy to fly while using their wings to assist them in balance and control of their bodies. Whether the same applies to flying dragons is unknown.
  • Despite having effects similar to magic, a Dragon's breath is instead an exceedingly powerful torrent of mana that destroys anything that makes contact.
  • According to Beatrice, the restorative Dragon’s blood that is held in Lugunica’s Royal Castle only has said effects because it was blood siphoned from the final heartbeat of a dying Dragon. As such, even if ordinary Dragon’s blood might have strong effects, blood of a comparative level to what is in the castle cannot be collected easily. Likewise, it is unknown if the quality of the Dragon whose blood is collected affects the quality of said blood’s restorative effects.
  • The city of Flanders is recognized as the Earth Dragon Capital of Lugunica due to the sheer number of earth dragons that reside in the city.
  • Despite being a dragonhusk, Volcanica is not confirmed to have made a dragonkin.
  • Madelyn Eschart has shown the ability to command the Dragon who created her and possess it. Likewise, she has shown to be capable of commanding flying dragons like subordinates. Whether these are abilities unique to Madelyn or are inherent in all dragonkin is unknown.
  • There are incidents in Vollachia called Flying Dragon Cataclysms (not to be confused with the incident in Guaral) in which flying dragons completely destroy a settlement during their breeding season.
  • Due to the covenant between Volcanica and Farsale Lugunica, a past Lion King of the Kingdom of Lugunica, the Kingdom decided to change their national symbol from a lion to a Dragon, and they became known as the Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica as a result.
  • Uniquely, Valgren has been stated to have three souls, one for each of its three heads.
  • Unlike the other nations, the Kingdom of Lugunica has a preference for using earth dragons for travel. Meanwhile, the Sacred Vollachia Empire is the only nation in which soldiers are taught to ride flying dragons, with Serena Dracroy’s Flying Dragon Squadron being the foremost most experienced unit in the country.
  • Presently, the only known location where water dragons have been shown to reside is the Watergate City of Priestella.
  • It is possible to summon certain Dragons. The Sin Archbishop of Pride, Stride Vollachia, used the skull of Valgren’s deceased dragonkin and soaked it in the blood of numerous sacrifices, alerting the Dragon of the location of its dragonkin's remains through its survival instincts.
    • In the Comic Alive version of Sword Demon Battle Ballad, however, a Dragon’s Fang was used rather than the skull. According to Stride, it could summon a blood-crazed dragon by allowing it to absorb the blood of heaven-sent children.
  • According to "Aldebaran" while within Volcanica's body, if one were to attempt to strengthen oneself by taking in a Dragon's blood without somehow diluting it, then the person would likely die.

It was precisely because of that way of being that led to the downfall of their kind. In the time before the dragonkin themselves had perished, they had driven over ten other races to extinction. Though, since Madelyn had existed, it should probably be said that the dragonkin had not actually perished. Re:Zero Tanpenshuu Volume 7, Sword Identity, Section 12.

Note[]

  1. The name of the original "true" Dragons that roamed the world 400 years prior to the main story is rendered in kanji as (龍), while the names of the lesser dragons with subspecies contain a separate kanji (竜). Due to the inability to replicate this difference in English, the term "dragon" is capitalized at times to indicate the difference between the more powerful Dragons and the specialized dragons.
