Re Zero Light Novel 32 2

Lupugana (ルプガナ, Rupugana), also known as the Imperial Capital of Lupugana (帝都ルプガナ, Teito Rupugana) or simply the Imperial Capital, is the capital city of the Sacred Vollachia Empire. It is administered by the emperor of Vollachia, Vincent Vollachia.

Having been at the center of both the Battle for the Imperial Capital and the Great Disaster, the city faced great damages, with numerous parts of the city having been erased.

Information[]

Lupugana is a large star-shaped city located near the center of the Empire. It is surrounded by a five-sided bastion fort with high city walls, a moat, and various forests situated in between each bastion. The bastions are protected by earth magic and will not collapse with normal attacks. The city can normally be accessed through a bridge located at the first bastion, which gives a direct path to the center of the city. Each bastion is numbered, with the first bastion located in the south, the second bastion located in the southeast, the third bastion located in the southwest, the fourth bastion located in the northeast, and the fifth bastion located in the northwest. To the city's north is a reservoir, which was formerly an area of the Imperial Capital. The architecture within the city itself varies little in quality from one part of the city to another. At the heart of Lupugana lies the Crystal Palace, which is considered to be the city's symbol.

During the Great Disaster, the walls containing the reservoir were heavily damaged, causing the Imperial Capital to experience unprecedented flash flooding. This necessitated the evacuation of the city's citizens. The Crystal Palace, too, was also completely destroyed. According to Priscilla Barielle, the damage done to the city was so immense that recovery might take a century.

History[]

Throughout the Empire's history, the reigning emperor has historically ruled Vollachia from Lupugana's Crystal Palace. At an unknown point in time, the Crystal Palace and the meteor within it, which would eventually become Moguro Hagane, were created. Some time after its creation, the Magic Crystal Cannon sitting atop the palace would come to be used in the past to destroy a large city, and according to legend, it was used against a Great Disaster.[1]

During Eugard Vollachia's reign, the bastions of the city were refashioned into the shape of a star in honor of his beloved Iris after her death.

The reservoir located to the north of Lupugana formerly contained portions of the city. However, it was burned down by Arakiya during one of her skirmishes with Cecilus Segmunt. The area was later reused as a reservoir at Chisha Gold's suggestion.

During the Imperial Civil War, the Imperial Capital acted as the base for Chisha and Berstetz’s forces, and eventually, the Battle for the Imperial Capital took place outside the bastions. The fight that broke out resulted in many casualties on the Rebel Army’s side, but their efforts also allowed for the walls of both the fourth and fifth bastions to be broken. Shortly after, they were interrupted by the arrival of the Witch Sphinx and her undead army. This hidden army, known now as the Great Disaster, forced everyone to retreat to Garkla.

Later, a specialized team returned to the Imperial Capital to defeat the Witch and her army. The battle here resulted in significantly more damage. A massive area around the second bastion was burned completely to ash, a large area surrounding the first bastion was utterly destroyed by a Dragon’s might, numerous areas beyond the third bastion were crushed underneath a rain of shattered ice, and other areas in the vicinity of the fourth bastion received severe damage from the swinging of the Fiend Sword. There were even entire buildings uprooted from the ground and weaponized, as seen in both Garfiel Tinzel’s and Arakiya’s fights. Even the Crystal Palace was unable to escape the destruction, as it was weaponized and promptly destroyed by the emperor and his entourage. The numerous chunks that had come off of the Crystal Palace as well as its great swings prior to its destruction left far greater damages to the city. The damages left to the city following the end of the fight was immense, and as such, nobody has taken up residence in the town again yet.

Locations[]

  • Crystal Palace (水晶宮, Suishō-kyū): The Crystal Palace was the castle where the emperor of Vollachia reigned from. It was considered the symbol of Lupugana and the heart of the Empire itself as a result of its unparalleled offensive and defensive capabilities. Due to the presence of the emperor, it was guarded by a large amount of soldiers from the Imperial Army. The citadel was an elaborately designed castle, with exceptionally rare magic stones being used throughout its construction, causing a high density of mana to flow within it. It supposedly also had the power to amplify magic thousands of times beyond its normal power.[2] At the highest point of the castle was the Magic Crystal Cannon, an immensely powerful cannon adorned with magic stones. In tandem with the castle's mana and the magic stones used across the entirety of its structure, the cannon's power could be amplified to extreme levels of power.[3] The Crystal Palace itself was governed by Moguro Hagane, a living meteor who gained their spirit from the high density of mana gathered around the castle.[4][5] During the Great Disaster, both the Crystal Palace and the great meteor that governed it were destroyed.
    • Throne Room: The throne room was located in the most elevated and prestigious room of the Crystal Palace. It had a great door leading into it and a blood-red carpet laid before the national flag of the Sword Wolf.
    • Guest Chambers: The guest chambers were on a high floor of the palace. They were comprised of elegant rooms that contain furnishing of the highest quality.
    • Library: The library of the Crystal Palace, where Vincent Vollachia discovered Stride Vollachia's concealed journal when he was a child.
    • Dungeon: An dimly lit underground dungeon where prisoners were thrown into. The dungeon was accessed through a staircase.
  • Berstetz's Mansion (ベルステツの邸宅, Berusutetsu no Teitaku): The official residence of Vollachia's current Prime Minister, Berstetz Fondalfon. It is a spacious mansion with a majestic atmosphere where even the rooms made for prisoners of war are lavishly designed. The mansion is overseen by Berstetz's own private army, which guards areas both within and around the premises. Most notably, there is a hidden tea chamber serving as a fortress for the sole purpose of private conversations; it is said to cost enough to buy an entire city by itself. Additionally, Berstetz's mansion possesses a courtyard, a garden, and a hidden compartment that can only be accessed from the roof of the mansion.
  • Reservoir: A reservoir for storing water located north of the Crystal Palace. It used to be comprised of the northern section of Lupugana until it was destroyed during a fight between Cecilus and Arakiya. As of the Great Disaster, the amount of water within the reservoir has been greatly diminished by the damage dealt to the walls containing it, causing the water to flood the city for a temporary period of time.
  • Flour Mill: A mill that contained wheat and flour. It was annihilated with a dust explosion triggered by Natsuki Subaru.

Former Residents[]

Trivia[]

  • Lupugana's name likely derives from the Latin word “lupus”, meaning “wolf”, as Vollachia's national emblem is the Sword Wolf and its citizens are frequently referred to as wolves both within and outside of the country.
  • In Ex Volume 4, it was originally stated that the walls of the bastion fort surrounding Lupugana's formed a square around the city. However, this was altered in Voume 32, and the Imperial Capital's walls were changed to form the shape of a star instead.
