This page is about the disaster in Arc 7 and Arc 8. For the historical incident that took place 400 years before the events of the series, see Great Calamity.

The Great Disaster (大災) was one of the four major disasters, taking place in the Sacred Vollachia Empire approximately one year and eight months after Natsuki Subaru was summoned to the world. It was an armed conflict where the deceased citizens of Vollachia were resurrected as undead by the Witch, Sphinx. Its prognosis was a driving force behind the Imperial Civil War in Arc 7, and it was the primary conflict that took place during Arc 8.

Directly preceding the disaster was the Battle for the Imperial Capital, a battle for control over Lupugana between the Imperial Army, the Pleiades Battalion, and the so-called Rebel Army. Its stopping point was marked by Chisha Gold's death and the rise of countless undead throughout the Imperial Capital of Lupugana.

In order to quell the Great Disaster, Vincent Vollachia took a specialized group with him to retake Lupugana, instigating the conclusive Conquest of the Undead Capital. The disaster came to an end after Subaru and Spica successfully used the Authority of Gluttony on the Witch.

Background[]

More than 40 years before Subaru's arrival to the world, a member of Vollachia's Imperial Family named Stride Vollachia fell sick and spent three months on the border between life and death. After conquering his illness at the cost of his body beginning to resemble a living corpse's, Stride began to believe in entities known as the “Observers”. He wrote a journal containing contents about them and the signs of a future Great Disaster to come. Stride soon concealed the journal inside the Crystal Palace's library, and for undisclosed reasons, his name was erased from the records of the Imperial Family and the Vollachia Empire.

In the same era, the future bearer of the Great Disaster, Sphinx, was taking part in the Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica's Demi-Human War. She had once been used in a failed immortality experiment by Echidna, but after acquiring parts of the Witch of Greed's soul, she found her way into the world and happened upon Valga Cromwell nearly 350 years after her creation. She joined the Demi-Human Alliance at his beckon and gained infamy as the only “Witch” besides Satella whose name was engraved into the history of the Kingdom. However, during the Invasion of the Royal Castle, Sphinx was forced to retreat and found herself taken captive by Leip Barielle, who she would be held prisoner by for over 40 years. Although she attempted to further her plans through two occasions while being trapped, these both failed. Sometime afterwards, Sphinx settled on targeting Vollachia with the plan of destroying the Empire.

When he was a child, Vincent Abellux discovered the hidden journal of Stride Vollachia, which contained foreknowledge of the Great Disaster. He used it before and after becoming emperor in an attempt to minimize the ruin it caused after ascertaining that it could not be stopped and believing his death was inevitable. Many of the actions Vincent had chose throughout his life, including his recruitment of Chisha Gold and Cecilus Segmunt, saving Prisca Benedict's life, his reforms to the Empire after becoming the emperor, and the reestablishment of the Nine Divine Generals, were all for the purpose of minimizing the Great Disaster's ruin.

Eventually, Ubilk, a Stargazer of the Empire, received a commandment that foretold that the Great Disaster could only begin with “Vincent Vollachia's” death in front of Chisha Gold and Vincent himself.[1] This greatly upset Chisha, who discovered that Vincent had known about the Great Disaster since he acquired Stride Vollachia's journal. In a later conversation with Ubilk, Chisha had the idea to replace Vincent's role in the commandment by using his ability.

Before the events of Arc 7, Chisha began cooperating with Berstetz Fondalfon's plan to rebel against Vincent, forced him away from the Imperial Capital, imprisoned Goz Ralfon, who had helped the emperor escape Lupugana and gained knowledge of the Great Disaster, and became the acting emperor by taking on his appearance. Throughout the arc's events, Chisha acted as the emperor in Vincent's place. He visited the Demon City of Chaosflame, witnessed the city's destruction by a mass of shadows, ordered members of the Nine Divine Generals and Kafma Irulux to guard Lupugana's bastions, and waited for Vincent to arrive at the Crystal Palace during the Battle for the Imperial Capital. Concurrently, Sphinx set five magic circles across the Empire to resurrect undead once the Great Disaster began.

When Vincent arrived at the Crystal Palace's throne room, during the Battle for the Imperial Capital, he and Chisha had a short confrontation. Suddenly, the latter was killed by Balleroy Temeglyph, a dead man who had formerly been the Ninth among the Nine Divine Generals. The deceased citizens of Vollachia, began being brought back by the bearer of the Great Disaster, Sphinx, and the Great Disaster began without Vincent Abellux dying, as Chisha's death while in the form of Vincent Vollachia fulfilled the prediction of Ubilk's commandment.[2]

Disaster[]

Retreat from Lupugana[]

Following Chisha’s demise, Moguro Hagane took the emperor outside, where they encountered the undead Balleroy flying around on his dragon, Carillon. Though confused over why he was alive, Moguro engaged in battle with Balleroy, nearly coming out victorious against him. However, having recognized Balleroy’s presence, Madelyn Eschart, possessing the Dragon Mezoreia, attacked Moguro and sided with Balleroy. The fight resulted in Vincent flying off of Moguro’s shoulder and being caught by numerous extended sheets, each one held out by the Stargazers, with Ubilk among them. Realizing what the Great Disaster truly was, he interrogated Ubilk, and he learned that this was merely one of the four major disasters that would affect the world.

Meanwhile, Divine General Goz Ralfon, who managed to escape from his prison with the help of Rem, charged his way to the throne room to confront the traitors who dethroned the emperor. When he made it there, he found Berstetz, who had been shocked to see the revived Lamia Godwin, and the deceased Chisha. On top of this, despite having attacked Lamia with a lethal attack, she not only survived but regenerated. Then, with the force of the other revived Imperial Family members, Goz and Berstetz were forced to retreat outside.

Vincent calling for retreat.

On the ground, Goz and Berstetz encountered Vincent with his mask still on. Similarly, Olbart Dunkelkenn, who had retreated from the fifth bastion, and Cecilus, who was chasing after the Dragon, also arrived there. Deciding it was time to retreat, Vincent removed his mask and ordered as such, though Cecilus ended up going off on his own. Simultaneously, the forces outside of the walls began their retreat as well, whether the Rebel or Imperial Army.

Elsewhere, beyond the fourth bastion, as Subaru’s group were heading through the Imperial Capital towards the Crystal Palace, they came across other undeads, forcing them to wonder what was going on. When Rui sensed the presence of someone she knew nearby, they changed their path in that direction, where they came across Rem and Flop O'Connell facing off against undead soldiers. After saving them, they came across Todd Fang, who had rescued his fiancé, Katya Aurélie, and offered a temporary alliance to leave the city. After freeing the imprisoned “black-haired crown princes”, they prepared to leave. At the same time, Cecilus encountered the orchestrator of the disaster by the reservoir walls.

Along the way, they encountered minimal interference. However, they eventually came across the undead Izmail, forcing them to take action. Though they were temporarily victorious, when Tanza was injured, Subaru and Todd lured the undead away, and they blew it up inside of a flour mill. Unfortunately, this was soon followed by Todd attempting to kill Subaru out of his paranoia. The resulting fight revealed Todd’s true race as a werewolf via his beastification. Thanks to the arrival of Emilia and Rem, who had met up shortly before, Todd was repelled and Subaru was saved before the reservoir walls came down. With one last attempt on Subaru’s life, Rem shoved Todd’s own axe into his body, and she knocked him into the rushing water. With Subaru passing out, they retreated.

Thanks to Emilia’s act of creating pathways for escape on her way towards Subaru, many civilians and soldiers caught up between the undead and the fighters were able to escape. At the reservoir, Cecilus had even successfully managed to kill the Witch, Sphinx. However, even with her death, the disaster had not ended.

Evacuation to Garkla[]

The majority of each of the living armies retreated from the Imperial Capital in the direction of the Fortified City of Garkla. While the Pleiades Battalion, the People of Shudrak, and the armies held back the undead, the coupled dragon carriages were used to escort the people of import, the injured, and citizens who were able to escape.

Lugunica and Vollachia forge an alliance.

With the awakening of Subaru, Vincent confronted him about Chisha’s death and Subaru’s apparent identity as a Stargazer. After Subaru rejected Vincent’s accusation and they settled their differences, the two took part in a meeting that would determine how everyone would treat the disaster moving forward, where it was revealed that Priscilla Barielle, Yorna Mishigure, Al, and Cecilus were forced to be left behind, their current predicaments unknown. Despite both sides having issues that needed to be handled, Vincent ultimately requested the assistance of the Emilia Camp, signifying the first time that Lugunica and Vollachia ever put aside their differences and worked together. Soon after, they received reinforcements in the form of Anastasia Hoshin and Julius Juukulius of the Anastasia Camp, and the strongest man in the Kararagi City-States, Halibel.

With the alliance formed, Roswaal and Beatrice temporarily joined the battle with everyone against the undead in order to determine the makeup of the spell used to revive the undead, now dubbed zombies. Here, they encountered Sphinx, who was now an undead herself after being killed by Cecilus, and with the help of Garfiel Tinzel and Mizelda Shudrak, they were able to defeat her. However, another Sphinx appeared at the coupled dragon carriages. Fortunately, Subaru was able to prevent its destruction with the help of Emilia, Julius, and Halibel. With these two incidents halted, everyone convened again, where the spell’s makeup and the zombies’ weaknesses were discussed with everyone. This led to Subaru and Vincent meeting with the shackled Ubilk, where they learned of the two lights necessary to prevent the Great Disaster: a girl who couldn’t speak brought by a Stargazer of the Kingdom and a beastman of the nine summits who was the most well-versed person in the Empire on curses. With the meeting concluded, Subaru discussed how Rui should be handled with the Lugunican party, with regards of everything that had happened in Vollachia up until now, which ended with Rui being renamed Spica. Meanwhile, Vincent spoke with Flop, who revealed vital pieces of information left behind by Chisha, and who offered his sister, Medium, to be his bride.

Soon after came the undead Blight Dragon Valgren, accompanied by Lamia Godwin and her resurrected Pruning Corps. On top of this, Vincent, Subaru, Beatrice, Roswaal, and Ubilk were all marked by another member of the imperial family, Palladio Manesque. Lamia managed to discover how to spread her soul across numerous undead receptacles, effectively paving the way for her to create a plethora of replicas of herself. Though battles with the various Lamias broke out all across the coupled dragon carriages, thanks to the efforts of Berstetz, an opening was created for Subaru and Spica to utilize the Authority of Gluttony on her. After Vincent landed the final blow against her, Balleroy appeared and took the last crumbling zombie of Lamia and retreated. In the end, Halibel defeated Valgren on his own, and the Pruning Corps were apparently wiped out.

Launching an Opposition[]

After arriving in Garkla, Vincent confirmed his suspicions and relayed them to his allies: the Stone, Muspel, was no longer within the confines of the Fortified City, having been plundered by the Witch. With this stated, it was concluded that it was being used as a battery to power the version of Sacrament of the Immortal King that was being used to revive the dead. Should the Stone’s immense amount of mana be used up, then the very earth of Vollachia would become uninhabitable, and the people on it would die as well, as Muspel was directly connected to all of the land of the country. With their goal of retrieving the Imperial Capital as soon as possible being set in stone, a special unit was made to complete this task.

Meanwhile in the outskirts of Lupugana, Al, who had been saved from the undead Viva, was traveling with Cecilus while heading in the direction of the Imperial Capital. Despite Cecilus’s actions of toying with Al, they managed to make progress, until they were interrupted by the arrival of an invisible, flying Balleroy. With the appearance of Cecilus’s father, Rowan Segmunt, they managed to repel the dead general. Nearby, Divine General Groovy Gumlet and Heinkel Astrea also appeared. The group had gathered together when Groovy stumbled on Heinkel and Rowan drinking away at a tavern despite the crisis, and by this point, they had decided to make their way towards the city as well. With everyone having converged, they continued forward until it was time to split their forces. Having determined that the zombies had their smallest number of forces at two of the bastions, Rowan went off on his own while Al directed Heinkel to the first bastion, fully aware of the trap he was leading him into. Meanwhile, Al, Groovy, and Cecilus made their way through the fourth bastion.

Groovy confronting the Emperor of the Briar.

Rowan confronted Yorna somewhere beyond the fifth bastion, and though she was holding back so as not to kill him, since he saw it as a way to reach the Heavenly Sword, he took his own life and became an army of zombies with their sights set on battling Yorna and improving themselves in undeath. Al’s group eventually ended up being ensnared by the Curse of Thorns, forcing Groovy to split up from the pair to challenge the one controlling the curse, while Al and Cecilus left to find the Fiend Sword and Dream Sword. However, in an unfortunate turn of events, Groovy confronted Eugard Vollachia, who wielded not only the Yang Sword but also the Fiend Sword, and Al and Cecilus were forced to confront Arakiya, who couldn’t control her own body after devouring the Stone.

During the battle against Eugard, Groovy resorted to self-poisoning in order to counteract the pain being caused by the curse being exuded from Eugard, and with extreme tenacity, Groovy used countless tools to catch the former emperor off guard, assaulting him from every direction. That said, due to the power of the Fiend Sword, Groovy took great damage and struggled, leaving him in a dangerous position. As for Heinkel, he confronted the Cloud Dragon Mezoreia, controlled by Divine General Madelyn Eschart. With their lives in danger, they were fortunately saved by the arrival of Garfiel and Halibel.

Defense of Garkla[]

As the fight in the Imperial Capital began, an army of zombies were brought forward to bring down the Fortified City. The zombies, led by Palladio Manesque, proceeded to engage in battle with the army defending the town, as well as with the Pleiades Battalion. Meanwhile, the people within the city were preparing for the battle, with Serena, alongside Berstetz, Otto, and Anastasia, leading the charge, and people like Rem joining the healing units to care for the injured. On the frontlines, Divine General Goz confronted the undead Gladiator Empress Hornet to reduce the casualties produced. Simultaneously, Julius and the People of Shudrak fought from atop the walls of Garkla, preventing the undead from climbing the walls. Though some were initially worried for the appearance of former Divine General Balleroy, Flop, who provided weapons and arrows to the people atop the walls, assured them that he would not appear.

Meanwhile, Palladio had a force prepared to infiltrate the city from above, abusing the undead’s revival and regeneration mechanisms to scale the nearby mountain and attack from both behind and above. That said, the allied forces were prepared for this, leaving a special unit from the Pleiades Battalion, led by Gustav Morello, to ambush the ambushers. Thanks to this, Serena was free to deploy her Flying Dragon Squadron into the battle. With other strategies failing, Valgren reappeared to destroy the city. However, through the combined efforts of Julius, the People of Shudrak, and Ram, they were able to sever and destroy Valgren’s three heads, and the Dragon’s body soon crumbled.

With all of his strategies being deterred, Palladio grew frustrated, until a transformed Sphinx, now calling herself the Witch of Greed, appeared on the battlefield and cast Al Shario. However, even this was stopped, having been destroyed by a stocked blast from the Magic Crystal Cannon unleashed by Subaru and Beatrice. The aftershock affected everyone on the battlefield, causing collapses in the city as well. That said, minimal casualties were caused thanks to the effects of Priscilla’s Soul Marriage Technique reaching everyone in the allied forces. After the terminus of the Conquest of the Undead Capital resulted in the undead being unable to resurrect, Palladio and his forces were cut down and finished off by Todd Fang.

Conquest of the Undead Capital[]

Re Zero Light Novel 37 1

The conquest begins.

Before arriving in the Imperial Capital, Subaru gave everyone their directions, having already made his “preparations”. As such, Garfiel went to the first bastion, Roswaal and Medium went to the third, Halibel went to the fourth, Emilia and Tanza went to the fifth, Subaru’s group went elsewhere beyond the fifth, and Olbart went to investigate the Crystal Palace. When Tanza and Emilia arrived at their destination, they saved Yorna from the undead Rowan, and they fought his many duplicate receptacles together. At the same time, Halibel confronted Eugard while saving Groovy from demise. Together, they discovered the true nature of Eugard’s curse. Thanks to Halibel’s strength, Eugard decided to discard the Fiend Sword and solely used Yang Sword against the wolfman. However, this decision is what led to the man’s defeat, as Groovy managed to get the sword to Halibel. After Halibel severed Sphinx’s influence on the Emperor of the Briar, he temporary reverted to a human form that ran on “embers”, and the Curse of Thorns came into Groovy's possession.

In the skies above the third bastion, Roswaal and Medium handled Balleroy, as his presence was the most important on the battlefield. Resorting to using Medium as a shield, dropping a massive glacier that Emilia made beforehand, and the usage of a spell that Julius specialized with, Roswaal was ultimately able to come out victorious against Balleroy, albeit after taking a powerful hit himself. Meanwhile, Garfiel was entrusted with defeating the Dragon at the first bastion. Despite taking a beating himself, Garfiel was able to not only give the Dragon a nosebleed, but he also flipped it by its tail and withstood a breath attack from it. When Mezoreia went into the skies to unleash its last powerful attack, Heinkel assisted Garfiel in reaching it and brought Mezoreia down.

As for Al and Cecilus, the two struggled greatly against Arakiya, as her body was being forced to defend itself with the power of one of the Four Great Spirits. That said, with Al throwing the Blue Lightning his sword, he was able to wipe out a good portion of her attacks, and soon after, he summoned the Dream Sword, using it in combination with the Soul Marriage Technique that was being used on the Spirit Eater to settle the Stone’s power within her and keep her alive. Finally, Subaru’s group confronted numerous zombies, and eventually, Sphinx herself. Though they managed to defeat one of her, multiple zombies of Sphinx appeared and pinned everyone down. However, thanks to Subaru’s strategy, several of the clones were destroyed, and Vincent used his own Yang Sword to burn Sphinx’s very soul.

Re Zero Light Novel 37 12

Sphinx becomes the Witch of Greed.

Despite their victory, Sphinx’s form changed into the appearance of the Witch of Greed, and she had several of her zombies scattered, with one appearing outside of Garkla. Meanwhile beyond the fifth bastion, Eugard appeared to help Yorna, leading to the swift defeat of Rowan. His very soul burning, Rowan rushed to confront Cecilus one last time, where he ultimately lost. Shortly after his defeat, Cecilus and Al confronted Sphinx, who had come to kill Arakiya, as her survival had become synonymous with the Empire’s survival. As their confrontation continued, Sphinx cast Al Shario, leading Cecilus to return to his original form and cut it down, while Al caught the surprised Witch off guard and sealed her with Ol Shamak. Though she was unable to fight, another version of her prepared to fire the last shot of the Magic Crystal Cannon at Al and Cecilus. Despite Cecilus being prepared to slash it, it was ultimately devoured by an Al Shamak cast by Subaru and Beatrice, who had been making their way to the Crystal Palace themselves.

Inside the Crystal Palace, after Olbart destroyed all of the magic circles altering the castle's internal structure and ending Viva's soul experiments, Olbart confronted another Sphinx, who was overloading the core of Divine General Moguro Hagane. In the confrontation, Sphinx destroyed herself and nearly killed the Vicious Old Man. That said, thanks to this, Olbart was able to call for the emperor, who was just beneath the Palace alongside Eugard, Yorna, and Tanza, and he reached the room they were in. Realizing Moguro could not be saved and that their overloaded core could destroy the Imperial Capital, he prepared to sacrifice part of his life to end Moguro’s soon-to-be exploding core. Before he could, Medium, accompanied by Balleroy, arrived. Flying the magic core into the sky, Balleroy and Carillon were caught in its explosion above the city, taking both their undead lives and the life of Moguro, the core itself.

In the sky, Subaru and Beatrice were saved by Roswaal when Valgren appeared, and soon after, both Halibel and Cecilus appeared and quickly dispatched the Blight Dragon. That said, death was soon upon them, with Sphinx splitting herself up to attempt to complete a magic circle, and the undead were attempting to kill Arakiya. With Emilia, Eugard, Cecilus, Halibel, and Garfiel holding off the five zombies, everyone else prevented the undead from reaching Arakiya. That said, even this was not the end, as Sphinx generated a massive mirror of water in the sky to reveal Al Shario being cast at Garkla. Despite this, Subaru and Beatrice released the Magic Crystal Cannon shot they absorbed at it, and when the deadly water Magic above threatened to tear everyone apart, Priscilla, who had been imprisoned in an extradimensional space, managed to escape and annihilate the spell in its entirety, with others destroying the Sphinxes coming to attack her. Unbeknownst to everyone, however, Priscilla only managed to escape by becoming an undead herself.

Having used her Soul Marriage Technique in Lupugana and Garkla and entrusting Sphinx to Subaru and Spica, Priscilla went with Vincent and Eugard to stop the final trump card up Sphinx’s sleeve: the Crystal Palace itself activating and preparing to kill everyone. As they burned down the Crystal Palace, Priscilla fought and defeated the remaining Sphinxes heading her way. Meanwhile, Subaru and Spica, being protected by everyone, spoke to Sphinx. Regaining his body’s original form in the process, he and Spica managed to devour her name, putting her to rest and ending the Great Disaster.

Aftermath[]

The defeat of Sphinx marked the collapse of the undead army's central forces in Lupugana, resulting in the surviving undead retreating and concealing themselves from the living. The number of casualties has not yet been fully ascertained. Naturally, the places within Vollachia that became battleground also have yet to be identified, but it is known that Garkla and Lupugana, two major cities within the Empire, were afflicted. Garkla's walls received considerable damage from the undead army, and civilians and soldiers alike began working to reconstruct them. Meanwhile, the destruction wrought to Lupugana caused the destruction of the Crystal Palace, and since the reservoir had not completely broken, it was at risk of being destroyed at any time. According to Priscilla, the state Lupugana was left in could very well take a century to restore.

Priscilla fading away.

In the immediate aftermath of the Great Disaster, the elite force that had participated in the Conquest of the Imperial Capital returned to Garkla along with those who had remained in the city prior. Subaru found Priscilla and took stroll with her, happening across various people while going around Garkla. Along the way, he learns that the undead Eugard, who had a humanoid form, has limited time left. Using the time he had, Eugard requested to the current emperor to put an end to the slaughter of wolf humans and mole humans. Eventually, the pair made their way to top of the city's walls, where Al was. Priscilla had already asked Berstetz to clear the guards from the area they were at. For a brief period, the trio drank some alcohol, and as Subaru sung, the master and servant duo of Priscilla and Aldebaran danced. However, this short-lived period came to an end when Subaru and Al realized that Priscilla was fading away, learning that she had become an undead at the climax of the Great Disaster. Subaru made his way to jump off of the wall, but he was stopped by Priscilla, and quickly realized she could not be saved after she congratulated him and Al for their services. The Sun Princess imparted her final words to the two knights and dissolved entirely, becoming the first of the five candidates to drop out of Lugunica's Royal Selection.

Furthermore, Moguro’s core was recovered, having fallen near the injured Groovy, yet his current position remains unknown due to the lack of the Crystal Palace and his memories having been reset. The Curse of Thorns, which Groovy had taken onto himself, was erased by a slash from the Fiend Sword, leaving the general with yet another injury. Eugard, having imparted his love to Yorna, faded away. With a vacancy among the Nine Divine Generals, Kafma was unable to refuse a promotion to First-Class General. Word of Vincent taking Medium’s hand as the future empress spread throughout the country. Mizelda took her position as Chieftain of the People of Shudrak back, and Taritta decided to accept Flop’s proposal for marriage. Mezoreia returned to its home, and Madelyn remained one of the Nine Divine Generals. Jamal became Vincent’s permanent bodyguard. Vincent pardoned Berstetz for his actions with Cecilus’s backing and protection. The members of the Pleiades Battalion, who had originally been gladiators due to past crimes, were also pardoned for their services to the country. As for the Royal Selection Candidates’ Camps, Anastasia decided her future departure through Kararagi while Emilia would return to Lugunica a few days later. The remaining members of the Priscilla Camp followed the Emilia Camp home. Spica remained in Vollachia to take care of the remaining undead with the assistance of Cecilus and Arakiya. As for Katya, she married Todd and eloped. Lastly, Al decided to act on the purpose that he was given by his sensei: to remove Subaru from the world.

Trivia[]

  • The name “Great Disaster” is not exclusive to the modern incarnation of the disaster. Long ago, at an unknown time in the past, Lupugana's Magic Crystal Cannon once destroyed a large city, and according to legend, it was used in an incident also known as a Great Disaster.[3]
