Meteors (ミーティア, Mītia) are ancient tools bearing the name of shooting stars that enable people to make use of magic without employing a gate.
Information
Meteors allow people to use magic without opening up a gate. However, instead of being used as tools, they are typically exchanged as gifts.[1] Various types of meteors with diverse functions exist, but they are generally scarce in nature. Individual meteors differ greatly from each other, and it is rare for any two of them to have the same function.[2] Yin and Yang magic stones are also used as battery substitutes in meteors.[3] In antiquity and the present, the main issue underlying meteors is that they have tended to deviate from their developers’ intentions, creating trouble in the long run.[4] Additionally, they were named after shooting stars, and they have been believed to possess the capabilities to make people's wishes come true.[5]
Types of Meteors
Moguro Hagane
Moguro Hagane (モグロ・ハガネ, Moguro Hagane) is the Eighth of the Nine Divine Generals in the Sacred Vollachia Empire and a living meteor who governed the Imperial Capital of Lupugana's Crystal Palace as its magic core (魔核, ma kaku).[6] As a meteor, they were influenced by the one who sat upon the Crystal Palace’s throne.[7] They had colossal toughness, a whirlwind fighting style, and an ability to alter the shape of their body. As long as Moguro’s true body, the magic core of the Crystal Palace itself, remained intact, they could not be completely defeated.[8] Though, even with the magic core destroyed, the other parts of the meteor of the Crystal Palace could still be weaponized. Amidst the chaos of the Great Disaster, the magic core exploded, and afterward, with the Crystal Palace turning into a “giant magic crystal soldier”, it was destroyed by several members of the imperial family and the Nine Divine Generals. The magic core of Moguro survived the explosion at the cost of having their memories reverted to zero.
Conversation Mirror
Conversation Mirrors (対話鏡, Taiwa-kyō) are meteors that allow a user to communicate with others over a long distance by connecting with a separate Conversation Mirror, similar to a cell phone. They were created by Echidna.[9] Though meteors are usually scarce, Conversation Mirrors are relatively common and easy to obtain.[10] A method to reproduce Conversation Mirrors was invented, but the costs involved in doing so make the idea of mass producing them impractical.[11] The Witch Cult often makes use of these meteors.
Collar of Submission
Collars of Submission (服従の首輪, Fukujū no Kubiwa), alternatively known as slave collars (奴隷の首輪, dorei no kubiwa),[12] are meteors that connect with the gate of the person controlling the collar and the meteor itself. The meteor administers electric shocks and causes scalding when used. It carries a small jewel in it, and without the jewel, the meteor becomes useless. When Reinhard wore a Collar of Submission during his diplomatic trip to the Vollachia Empire, it made him feel lethargic and limited his powers to a certain extent.[13]
White Fox's Nest
The White Fox's Nest (白狐の巣, Byakko no Su) is a meteor that captures a person and makes them do a trial based on the owner's magical experience and mana. The target cannot escape unless the trial is finished, and the target cannot die within the trial either. When Ezzo used it against Subaru and Rem, thinking they were Roswaal and Ram, the design of the inside of the meteor was a plain white room with white walls on all four sides and a crystal in the middle. When a person entered a room, the iron door behind them closed and did not open until the trial ended. Ezzo forced them to challenge four trials in order to get out of the meteor. In order for the trials to end, the crystal had to be destroyed.
Void Garb
The Void Garb (虚影装, Kyokagesou) was a meteor that Mother loaned to Reisel. It can allow the user to create shadowy humanoid figures using their hair that can be controlled. The user shares in the shadows' senses, including in their sense of sight and pain. The Void Garb was destroyed by Reisel to prevent the recoil of his shadows from killing him.
Beast Protection Bracelet
The Beast Protection Bracelet (獣護輪, Juugorin) is a bracelet shaped meteor that transforms the user into a beast when they sense danger, whether it is while they are conscious or unconscious. As a beast, the user gains a rapid influx of mana, making them stronger in combat at the cost the user's capability for reason.[14] In the days of yore, the meteor was created as a resource to help humans out of pity.[15] The Beast Protection Bracelet is currently owned by Colette.
Cloak of Concealment
The Cloak of Concealment (姿隠しのマント, Shikakushi no Manto) is a meteor that, when worn, allows a user to temporarily conceal their presence by tricking others' sense of sight. However, it can not mask things like sound, odor, footsteps, or anything else like it.[16] The cloak was used by Vincent Vollachia.
Insect Whistle
The Insect Whistle (蟲笛, Mushibue) is a meteor that allows its user to control and manipulate insects. Its capabilities are similar to that of a member of the Insect Cage Clan.
Echidna's Meteor Staff
This meteor is a long, white staff with a spear-like shape, made to be a simple and functional design.[17] It releases a large destructive force when supplied with mana that can be sensed by others,[18] and its attack causes utter decimation, mowing down everything in its path.[19] If there were buildings in the beam's path, a hole would blast through them, leaving lingering hot steam.[20] Its aftereffects on a person leave them with scalding hot coils of steam rising from them and horrific burns across their bodies.[21] Echidna created this meteor,[22][23] and according to what Beatrice heard from Roswaal A. Mathers, its primary purpose was to pester the Divine Dragon, Volcanica.[24]
Broadcast Meteor
This meteor, a device shaped like an pipe organ, allows someone's voice to be spread across a large distance via broadcasts. It is designed the enhance a user's voice and only relies on magic stones as its battery.[25] The broadcasts from this meteor have an important role in the Lugunican city of Priestella, where they broadcast to everyone across the city in preparation for any potential emergencies as a result of the limited escape routes that the city has to offer.[26]
Priestella's Control Towers
In Priestella, the control towers that occupy the four cardinal directions in each of the four districts are meteors. They regulate the amount of water and flow rate of water within the city by using water magic stones to control the currents. Furthermore, the city’s watergates are controlled inside the towers.[27][28]
Fireball-Spewing Meteor
An ring-shaped meteor with a limited quantity of magic sealed within it. The jewel on the ring releases a fireball when it is activated, and the meteor must be kissed in order for it to acknowledge a holder. One copy of the meteor was given to Berstetz Fondalfon as a mark of being Vollachia's Prime Minister, and Vincent Vollachia owned two other copies for the sake of self-defense.
Door Meteor
This meteor appears as a black door with strange patterns marked into its surface, a blue crystal in the middle of it, and an overall eerie air. The material it was made from looks like iron from a glance.[29] When a condition is set on the door, it cannot be opened unless said condition is fulfilled. In one case, this meteor variant was fine-tuned to use a song by Liliana Masquerade as its key.[30][31]
Hair Bobble Meteor
This meteor is a hair bobble that comes in a set of two. So long as one of the hair bobbles is held, it can determine where the other is, no matter the distance between them.[32] Liliana Masquerade and Kiritaka Muse own a set of these meteors.
Tube-Shaped Meteor
This meteor is a tube-shaped device that has the power to amplify magic. The strength of magic unleashed through this device can be at least five times as potent as its normal level.[33] This meteor was previously used by Leip Barielle.
Cup Meteor
This dull-silver cup meteor could turn alcohol into a drug that alleviates pain.[34] There were rumours surrounding its effects, such as the claim that it could cure any ailments when alcohol was poured into the cup and drunk. Priscilla Barielle destroyed the cup after Heinkel Astrea discovered the rumours' fallaciousness.
Pearl Meteor
This meteor is a pearl that can change color depending on the magic affinity of what it was placed on.[35] For example, if the pearl was placed on someone who had Yin Magic, it would change to a black color.
Trivia
- In the web novel, meteors were named magical devices (魔法器, Mahō-ki) up until Arc 7.
- Magicreation Tools, invented by Roswaal K. Mathers, are known as modern-day meteors.
- Around 300 years ago, in the Vollachia Empire, meteors were known as magic tools (魔具, magu).
- Roswaal J. Mathers speculated that a dagger once owned by Leip Barielle was a meteor.[36]
- The Witch of Greed, Echidna, is the only known individual who demonstrated the capacity to create meteors. Her unnamed staff and the Conversation Mirrors are the only two variants of meteors that have been stated to be made by her.
- Two meteors have appeared in two Re:Zero EX chapters. One of them, in Re: Drowning Life in Another World from Zero, was Subaru's throne in Pandemonium, which could protect the area surrounding it from attacks as powerful as a sword slash from Reinhard van Astrea. The other, in Re: Natsuki Rem in Another World from Zero, was a photo-taking meteor in Kararagi, although the author has confirmed that photo-taking meteors also exist in Lugunica.[37]
- In the first few arcs of the series, Subaru often claimed that his cell phone was a meteor. Prior to negotiating with Crusch Karsten in Arc 3, he made a deal with Russell Fellow to cooperate with each other in the aforementioned negotiations on the condition that he relinquish the phone once he had finished hunting the White Whale.[38][39] At some point after Arc 3's conclusion, Subaru forfeited his cell phone to Russell under Crusch's supervision.[40]
