Information |
Undead (屍人, Shibito) is a general name for reanimated corpses that are raised by a caster and follow their bidding. They are also known as corpse soldiers (屍兵, shikabane-hei) and zombies (ゾンビ, zonbi).
Information[]
An undead can be made by the Sacrament of the Immortal King, a type of magic classified as a forbidden art that returns a soul to the body it left.[1] The forbidden technique was developed by a Witch who could completely resurrect the dead, making them look exactly as they had in life, though the spell has mostly faded from living memory and it is impossible to realize without a caster who has an innate aptitude for it.[2][3] However, if the spell were to be successfully replicated, it could allow the deceased to be resurrected.[4] It is only possible for a caster of the Sacrament of the Immortal King or a person given authority by the caster to control undead.[5]
There are two main undead variants that have been presented in the overall story thus far; they are usually differentiated from one another by name. Basic lifeless undead that lack souls in their reanimated bodies are called corpse soldiers, whereas undead with abnormal vitality are dubbed zombies.
Corpse Soldiers[]
Corpse soldiers are an undead variant that are manufactured with an incomplete version of the Sacrament of the Immortal King, and for that reason, their souls do not reside within their reanimated bodies.[6][7] They are limited with the capability to only follow simple commands.[8] A corpse soldier can be resurrected as a rotting corpse, be resurrected after having their bodies preserved through magic, or, as seen with Theresia van Astrea, may even seemingly have their age reverted to a younger version of themselves. When a corpse soldier receives fatal damage and is unable to maintain its form, it is reduced to ash. However, some corpse soldiers have been observed to fulfill a lingering impulse or converse with other people before fully perishing.
Despite the great power that they may have had in life, a corpse soldier's martial capabilities are lessened from their original levels.[9][10] They are also unable to feel pain,[11] and can even survive what would typically be a mortal wound for a living person or function without vital body parts like the head.[12][13]
Zombies[]
Zombies are an undead variant with abnormal vitality. On two separate occasions, Aldebaran and Natsuki Subaru used their Earth knowledge to describe this type of irregular fauna as “zombies”. There are two types of undead known as zombies, both of which were created by Sphinx.
Parasite-Based Zombies[]
The first type of zombies were moving corpses that had irregular energy, having the capability to move after a normal body's weak points, such as their heart or the neck, were destroyed.[14][15] Their bodies were bloodless[16] and due to the flaws in their creation, decomposed over time.[17][18] These zombies were created from contaminated water containing parasites that turned people into undead.[19][20] Once they were ingested, the parasites gradually took control of the brains of men and eventually gained full control over their bodies.[21] When the parasites completely manifested in a body, they appeared as tentacle-like appendages which displayed the capability to move, and they acted as if they had a will to survive.[22][23] Peculiarly, the parasites could not control children and most women despite residing in their bodies,[24] with the exception of one undead woman who acted as the queen of the parasites.[25]
The zombies made from these parasites themselves had differences. Some were unintelligent and acted similarly to corpse soldiers, yet others could speak.[26] Regardless of their inequalities, both the conscious and mindless undead could meld together into one form. They could assemble into a singular inhuman entity that was effectively a lump of rolling zombies,[27] or one zombie could assimilate others into itself.[28] According to the parasite controlling the body of Edda Rayfast, the speed of the parasites' growth was fast; they were corpses that could only move once their hosts' brains were rotted at first, but over time, as the hosts' intellect and thought processes remained intact, it was believed that they could control hosts when they were completely alive and eventually create natural-born zombies.[29][30] Furthermore, they were tasked with the mission to create a paradise where their maker could be at peace.[31] In a village of the Barielle Barony with men controlled by these parasites, the self-aware zombies tried taking the place of the men and appeared to be replacing their lives entirely.[32] A similar zombie type appeared in Nanou, a smaller city in Kararagi that borders Vollachia.[33]
Corebug-Based Zombies[]
The second type of zombies were reproductions of deceased people with the memories they had up until their deaths, but rather than having their original bodies, the zombies' vessels were made of earth.[34] Despite these vessels' poor quality of skin, they were in as much shape and had the same level of strength as the original body that a given undead had, but they were unable to surpass the limits that their old bodies reached.[35] Each zombie possessed pale skin bereft of color, various cracks that run across their bodies, pitch-black sclera, and radiant golden irises. When a zombie's vessel was damaged, they lacked blood to flow from their wounds.[36] According to Lamia Godwin, her body did not seem to feel pain upon being damaged;[37] however, this was not true for the undead who came into contact with Eugard Vollachia and experienced the pain of his Curse of Thorns.[38] Although a zombie could be broken apart into various fragments, if its core was not destroyed, it began the process of regenerating itself by unnaturally wriggling and fusing the fragments together until the vessel was once again whole.[39][40] If grasped, a zombie even had the potential create more vessels and fill their soul with them to create multiple copies of themselves,[41] though there was a limit to the amount of vessels that can be duplicated with this technique.[42] Of the four main magic attributes, the most effective one that could be utilized to defeat zombies was fire; wind magic did badly against them, the effect of earth magic was no more than a physical strike, and freezing them was inefficient due to its mana consumption.[43] In addition, yin magic is highly effective in defeating zombies, to the point that it is one of their greatest weaknesses.[44]
The zombies were revived by a combination of the Sacrament of the Immortal King to utilize souls and restoration magic to create vessels,[45] with the soul being used first and the vessel coming second, changing form to fit the soul.[46][47] The source of the mana that recreated the zombies was Muspel, the great spirit that governs the earth affinity.[48] Its extraordinary large supply of mana was utilized to inexhaustibly revive the undead.[49] The cores that kept zombies intact and created them were called corebugs (核虫, kaku mushi), which were small, round red bugs that appeared similar to caterpillars.[50][51] A corebug acquired the data of a deceased person to turn them into a zombie, and reproduced the victim's original form with a vessel of earth.[52] This process could be finished near instantaneously, meaning that someone who died could immediately become a zombie following their own demise,[53] though the body of the zombie was separate from the body of the corpse. The corebug, which could be located in a variety of body parts, impacted the durability of a zombie; they could be impervious to damage if stricken in areas that the corebug was not present in,[54] but if the corebug itself was destroyed, the zombie broke apart and was immediately destroyed.[55][56] This, however, did not exclude the soul of the destroyed zombie from being reused and turned into a zombie over and over again. Once revived, a destroyed zombie could remember their past experiences and the circumstances that caused their destruction,[57][58] allowing them to utilize the information to their advantage.
According to Lamia Godwin and Balleroy Temeglyph respectively, it seems that people who were satisfied at death are not resurrected,[59] and the desire of the undead is to resolve any of the grudges or resentment they had in life.[60] Their aggressive feelings towards the Vollachia Empire were implanted or amplified upon becoming zombies,[61] evidenced by the fact that deceased zombies have attacked their former comrades despite being allies until just prior.[53][62] The process that altered the mental structure of a zombie, which varied case-to-case, carried the risk of making the zombie unable to match the strength they held in their lifetime.[63] To compensate, the load of the mental alteration process was reduced for capable individuals such as Eugard and Balleroy, giving them some degree of free will,[64] whereas zombies like Lamia who chose to willingly cooperate with Sphinx were spared from having their minds altered.[65] Unusually, as observed with Izmail, a powerful individual with an excessive ardor for combat and fervid hatred at the moment of their death could manage to maintain their original power under the pressure of the mind control process.[66] This came to the detriment of the zombie's soul being stretched out, transforming into a grotesque, monstrous abomination with massive limbs that rapidly multiplied, a swelled frame larger than its original physique, and a fragile torso of skin and bone. This form was maintained after each resurrection of the zombie.[67]
There were three known methods of permanently preventing a zombie from being resurrected while Muspel was actively casting restoration magic on each zombie: Spica's “eating” of a zombie with the Authority of Gluttony, scorching a zombie's soul with the Yang Sword Volllachia's flames, and returning a zombie to their original human form while still remaining an undead, either through the Fiend Sword Murasame or by the zombie themselves managing to revert to it.

Trivia[]
- In the narration of Arc 8, the capacity that an earthen zombie has to be destroyed and recreated anew is called Escape by Death (死に逃げ, Shininige).
- In Volume 33, Lamia said that her undead body did not seem to feel any pain. This was edited in successive volumes to allow for the zombies to feel pain.
- The Vollachia zombies were said to have an anchor.[68] The nature of their anchor has not been clarified.
- In a conversation with Garfiel Tinzel, Lamia lamented that the Vollachia undead could not utilize Halibel if he were to die and expressed disappointment upon learning that the boy and his comrades were from the Kingdom of Lugunica, heavily implying that, with the exception of Sphinx, the spell caster responsible for creating the undead, only Vollachians met the criteria to become this type of zombie. However, Balleroy was under the impression that zombies could only be made from people who died in the Empire, and, in order to create undead outside of it, the country first needed to be destroyed, and magic circles needed to be placed in the other countries.[69]

- ↑ Thinking about the villages that used the water from the Tenrill River, as well as the grave situation where the villagers from said villages turned into undead one by one, there was no room left to doubt the idea that the parasites―― the cause of the fiasco, entered the body through water that had been ingested from the river. - ↑ This resurrected body was in great shape despite the poor quality of its skin, and Eugard even harbored the misapprehension that he could move inexhaustibly. Of course, that was not the case in reality. This body was not something that could surpass his strength in life, and he ought not to desire anything more excessive than the restoration capabilities whenever the body was broken. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 37, Chapter 3, Section 8.
- ↑ No jest nor metaphor in that expression, it had been spoken in its truest sense. There had been no blood flowing from the wounds, the crushed parts wriggled and combined together like ice filling out a lake. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 33, Chapter 5, Section 5.
- ↑ “Well, this body… it does not seem to feel any pain, so I guess that is a relief.” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 33, Chapter 5, Section 5.
- ↑ Even the bodies of the undead still felt pain all the same. Ergo, Eugard stood here alone as the guardian of this location. Even if the others were undead, so long as they entered the range of the curse, they would still be tormented by the binding. For even if they were undead, Eugard had no intention of indiscriminately inflicting pain upon the peoples of his country. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 37, Chapter 3, Section 8.

- ↑ Turning around, Rem and Flop witnessed the supposedly-beaten ‘enemies’ regenerating. The broken pieces of pottery fused together as if time had been reversed; though fissures with the appearance very much as if they were seams were visible, they had been restored to their original state. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 33, Chapter 5, Section 10.

- ↑ The particular effectiveness of yin magic against zombies―― that was the greatest weakness of the enemy as was currently understood. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 34, Chapter 1, Section 10.
- ↑ “Your judgement is correct. The fact that the zombies can be resurrected without their original corpse means that Restoration Magic is being utilized. With that as a hypothesis, the Sacrament of the Immortal King also ought to be being used in order to call down the souls.” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 35, Chapter 1, Section 4.
- ↑ “…The basis is the same, but the approach is different, in fact. For the Sacrament of the Immortal King, the vessel comes first, and the soul second, I suppose. However, as for these zombies…” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 35, Chapter 1, Section 4.
- ↑ “The soul comes first, and the vessel after. ――The body changes form to suit the soul.” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 35, Chapter 1, Section 4.
- ↑ “If anything, the existence of the Stone is being put to use by the opponent… by the Great Disaster.” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 36, Chapter 1, Section 2.
- ↑ “Is in the palm of the enemy’s hand. Likely, in order for the Great Disaster to inexhaustibly give rise to the undead from the grave, it is utilizing that extraordinary amount of mana. Henceforth, they continue to appear in perpetuity.” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 36, Chapter 1, Section 2.
- ↑ As he stated this, in Roswaal’s hand was a small block of ice being pinched between his fingers, about the size of a coin; inside, there was a red, round object. Upon closer inspection, he understood that it was a small round bug that looked like a caterpillar――. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 35, Chapter 3, Section 2.
- ↑ “This corebug is lurking within the body of every zombie. And, this worm is the zombie’s lifeline… in other words, it is undoubtedly their core.” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 35, Chapter 3, Section 2.
- ↑ “We will be working to unravel more about the technique, but this corebug acquires the data of the target that is to turn into a zombie, and then reproduces the original form by making a vessel out of earth…” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 35, Chapter 3, Section 2.
- ↑ 53.0 53.1 “It seems that when a soldier who was fighting with them died, that same soldier would immediately turn into a zombie and attack them, I suppose.” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 36, Chapter 1, Section 2.
- ↑ It did not seem like the difference in toughness was based on where the arrows pierced them, either. There were some undead that were fine even when pierced in the eye, and some that would shatter when pierced in the shoulder. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 35, Chapter 1, Section 4.
- ↑ “So, the true nature of Garfiel’s perceived discrepancy was the difference in the points at which an arrow killed the corebug within the zombie’s body.” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 35, Chapter 3, Section 2.
- ↑ An undead’s weak point was neither their heart, nor their cranium. Operating within the vessels of earth, were the corebugs discovered by Beatrice and Roswaal. As long as that remained intact, the activity of an undead would not come to a halt. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 35, Chapter 7, Section 3.
- ↑ “Perhaps making it even worse, the next resurrected zombie could be aware of her previous death and the circumstances that caused it.” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 35, Chapter 3, Section 1.
- ↑ Even if this body were to perish, she would simply regenerate, just like her other selves. Moreover, the advantage of this regeneration was not just the fact that death did not mean the end. The next Lamia to rise would inherit all of this Lamia’s experiences. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 35, Chapter 6, Section 9.
- ↑ “It seems that neither father, nor Barthroy-niisama, have come back. Those two were satisfied.” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 35, Chapter 7, Section 3.
- ↑ “The desires of the undead have been fixed since the dawn of time; it’s to clear up any remaining grudges or pent-up resentment.” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 35, Chapter 7, Section 6.
- ↑ “We should assume that the aggressive sentiment toward His Excellency Vincent and the Vollachia Empire was implanted or amplified in the process of being resurrected as zombies.” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 36, Chapter 1, Section 2.
- ↑ “Those who were fighting as allies until just previously, attack as soon as they turn into zombies, hm? It appears that Otto-dono’s assessment is certain.” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 36, Chapter 1, Section 2.
- ↑ More or less, a process had been applied to alter the mental structure of the undead to differ from what it was during their lifetime. If not for that, the resurrected dead would likely not all assist in the destruction of the Empire. The degree to which that process had been applied varied from case-to-case, but there was a danger that, inverse to the large load being imposed upon the original form and nature in order to make them loyal to orders, they would become unable to perform at their original strength. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 37, Chapter 7, Section 2.
- ↑ Therefore, it was customary for the caster to want to reduce the load in proportion to how strong any given individual was during their lifetime. In reality, considering the risk of causing severe debilitation on strong assets such as the Emperor of the Briar and the Magic Bullet Marksman by forcing that burden on them, the Witch had shifted gears to avoid that at the cost of granting them a moderate extent of free will. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 37, Chapter 7, Section 2.
- ↑ In any case, excluding such exceptionally strong individuals, and Lamia Godwin, who had displayed the will to take initiative in cooperating with the Witch, the souls of the undead were cruelly being toyed with. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 37, Chapter 7, Section 2.
- ↑ Possessing the might of an elite warrior, bearing a remarkable zeal for battle within, losing no value despite being made into a subservient puppet, it had vehement regret and hatred scorched into it during its final moments. ――For that reason, that being turned undead rampaged in a ceaseless discharge of fury. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 37, Chapter 7, Section 2.
- ↑ Torn to shreds, in a form that stretched out its soul as it was in the process of losing its original form, having forgotten that its body was ever in a humanoid form, it had been transformed into a repulsive, grotesque form. Even if its appearance had completely changed, with large, long arms, an exceedingly increased number of legs, and a flimsy torso of skin and bone, it could not escape the situation of being used by the Witch. Even after being killed over and over, its soul would stretch larger, and it would be revived as another monster. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 37, Chapter 7, Section 2.
- ↑ Dispossessed of their free will, becoming a being used and discarded as tools for the sake of battle, their soul would be called down again even were they to repeatedly taste Death, their earthen vessels revived with a new anchor. Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 37, Chapter 7, Section 2.
- ↑ “…Seems like the people who get resurrected by the Witch are limited to just the people who died in the Empire. The only way to get rid of that restriction, is destroying the Empire, and, well, the magic circle, right? We have to expand its range further beyond to the Kingdom and the City-States. If we do that, then finally, by doing that, I’ll finally be able to…” Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 38, Chapter 3, Section 9.
