Lugnician Slums

Lugunica (ルグニカ, Rugunika), also known as the Royal Capital of Lugunica (王都ルグニカ, Ōto Rugunika), or simply the Royal Capital, is the capital city of the Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica. It is where the Lugunican royal family traditionally ruled the Kingdom of Lugunica from, until their purported extinction. The Council of Wise Men is currently regulating the country as its provisional government, holding the Royal Selection to choose a new monarch.

Information[]

Lugunica is a large circular city in the heart of the Kingdom, surrounded by high outer walls. It can be accessed from the gate in front of the city that goes along the main street and directly leads to to its center. The Royal Capital is divided into five layers, with the topmast layer being the core of the city, containing the Royal Lugunica Castle and the areas surrounding it, including the knights’ garrison, the Prison Tower, the Magic Research Institute, and the Kingdom Cemetery. Under the castle layer is the elegant Nobles’ District where the country’s nobility resides, and below it is the Commercial District, home to a variety of shops. The Commoners’ District and the slums are on the lowest layer. The city is characterized by a disparity between the wealthy and the destitute, who could be said to live in completely contrasting worlds.

The capital has a population of 300,000, although when accounting for merchants and adventurers, there are more people within it at any given time. The districts on the lower layers are abundant with a great number of demi-human races across them, making the Royal Capital a melting pot. However, as a possible result of the prejudice they face, demi-humans are almost always commoners, so they are usually unseen in the Nobles’ District and the Royal Castle. A number of guard stations are scattered around the city to maintain law and order. In addition, it has a region known as the trading street (商い通り, akinai-dōri) in the Commercial District, a street filled to the brim with countless stalls that vend an assortment of goods. The changes in the exchange rates of currency are posted on a sign at the entrance to the street.

History[]

  • Note: The characters within the story rarely describe historical events within helpful context, so the unit BA, “Before Arrival”, and AA, “After Arrival”, will be used to place moments in time with the best available knowledge. Both are in reference to Natsuki Subaru’s arrival in the new world. Also note that the units are not official.

Before 400 BA[]

  • Years before the covenant with Volcanica was formed, demi-humans had a presumably involuntary role in constructing the Royal Castle.[1] The castle’s hidden passageways were created at this time.

Around 50 BA[]

  • Emerada Lugunica, a princess known for her beauty, wisdom, and cruelty, suddenly succumbs to an illness at a young age. The news of her death was suppressed for a period of time because she was branded a heretic for having an unfathomable darkness within her. Emerada was ultimately denied a state funeral, with the claimed reason being that the circumstances were too dire to give her one. However, in actuality, the Kingdom’s people were against holding one for her.

48 BA to 39 BA[]

  • The Demi-Human War begins. As the war drags on, the bustle in the Royal Capital gradually fades over time.
  • Roswaal J. Mathers becomes involved in the war when Sphinx appears at Castour Field to gather corpse soldiers. Following a brief encounter at Castour Field, Roswaal and the members of the Zellgef Squadron who accompanied her give a report on Sphinx’s activity at the assembly hall within the Royal Castle. Afterwards, Sphinx is branded a Witch.
  • In 43 BA, Sphinx, Valga Cromwell, and an undead Libre Fermi launch an attack on the Royal Castle. They are all confronted and defeated by Wilhelm Trias, Grimm Fauzen, Bordeaux Zellgef, Carol Remendis, and Roswaal J. Mathers. Libre is reduced to ash and the other two attackers are presumed dead, but in truth, Valga was covertly taken prisoner and was sent to the McMahon Manor outside the Royal Capital, while Sphinx was left limbless and taken captive by Leip Barielle, who sought to further his plan to take the Kingdom for himself.
  • That same year, the Sword Demon abandons his knighthood and leaves his post at the Royal Capital to return to his home, the Trias Domain, when he discovers that it is under attack. He was cornered by demi-humans until Theresia van Astrea saved him. When he returns to his and Theresia’s meeting spot in the slums, he has a falling out with her and spends the next few years improving his sword skills.
  • The fighting ends in 41 BA. Two years later, Cragrell Dawson, the last remaining leader of the Demi-Human Alliance and the demi-human representative, signs a peace treaty with King Gionis Lugunica, ending the war.
  • A ceremony to commemorate Theresia’s wartime achievements is held at the ceremony hall in the Royal Castle. Wilhelm interrupts the proceedings and faces off against Theresia in a sword battle, which results in his victory.
  • Following his duel with Theresia, Wilhelm is imprisoned in a cell with “Six Tongues” Orphe at the Prison Tower, but is shortly released thanks to the Sword Saint pleading to King Gionis and receiving his compassion.
  • Wilhelm spars with forty combatants handpicked by King Gionis, including Bordeaux, Grimm, Carol, and Conwood Melahau, in order to prove that the Sword Devil replace the role of the Sword Saint. He is victorious and gains his knighthood once again. He also puts in a good word for Orphe and recommends Bordeaux to have the con artist work for him.
  • Theresia and Wilhelm get married, which officially allows the former to retire from the Royal Army.

Roughly 38 BA[]

  • In the wake of the Demi-Human War, Roswaal founds the Magic Research Institute, and Orphe gains subordinates to monitor various places and gather intelligence for Bordeaux as part of a trial period of sorts.
  • Wilhelm makes a report concerning Stride Vollachia and Kurgan’s appearances at the Royal Castle’s assembly hall. A short time later, Stride barges into the Astrea Manor to place a curse on Carol and meets Wilhelm once again.
  • Stride breaks into the Astrea Manor for a second time to kidnap Theresia, force Carol to murder Veltol Astrea with her curse, cast a curse on Tishua Astrea that stripped her of her will, and leave the widow with a message for Wilhelm, informing the Sword Demon that he will be awaiting the conclusion of their story in Picoutatte.
  • A subjugation force is assembled and dispatched to Picoutatte to defeat Stride Vollachia, rescue the two hostages he took, and save the city from his madness.
  • Grimm retires from the Zellgef Squadron after the successful defeat of Stride to marry Carol. The remaining members of the Zellgef Squadron are promoted to become members of the Royal Guard. Wilhelm is appointed as commander of the Royal Guard, and Conwood becomes their vice commander.
  • Around this time, the Six Tongues, a defense organization dedicated to protecting Lugunica from the shadows, is created. Its namesake came from Orphe’s nickname.

17 BA[]

  • Two years after Reinhard’s birth, when Heinkel Astrea is 21 years old, his wife Louanna falls victim to the Sleeping Beauty disease and is confined to a room of the Astrea Manor.

15 BA[]

  • Marcos Gildark quits the knights and founds The Brotherhood, which seeks to benefit the people of the slums. Around the same time, Russell Fellow subtly persuades Fareed Impusen to found the Golden Wing Faction, a gathering of nobles without a cause.
  • Roswaal has his family crest stolen by Belmont and is knocked out by Marcos upon attempting to retrieve it. Russell encounters Roswaal and joins his search for his missing crest. Around the same time, Heinkel Astrea attempts to convince Marcos to rejoin the knights, but ultimately fails, leaving with Reinhard, who accompanied him, back to their manor. Roswaal and Marcos fight shortly afterwards. The fight results in Roswaal’s victory, but only because Reinhard utilized the Divine Protection of Mind-Changing to convince Marcos to rejoin the knights. After the battle, Roswaal gets Russell’s help to host a meeting between The Brotherhood and the Golden Wing Party, resulting in both groups deciding to leave the Royal Capital and move to Costuul, while Marcos resigns to rejoin the knights, appointing Leno Rex as his replacement. That night, Russell sends people to the Astrea Manor upon discovering the source of the interference in Marcos’s fight, threatening the young Reinhard to protect the Kingdom for his family.

14 BA[]

  • The Royal Abduction Incident in which Ford Lugunica’s daughter was kidnapped from the Royal Castle by “thieves” occurs. Wilhelm is tasked with recovering Ford’s daughter.
  • An operation to subjugate the White Whale dubbed the Great Conquest is organized. Heinkel Astrea declines to join the operation and recommends that his mother, Theresia, participate instead. It ultimately results in the transfer of the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint to Reinhard, Theresia’s death, and a disastrous defeat to the knights.
  • With the search for Ford Lugunica’s daughter ending in failure and the presumed death of his wife to the White Whale, Wilhelm resigns from the Royal Guard.

Roughly 9 BA[]

  • On the day of the Tanmuz Festival, Roswaal, Ram, Rem, and Frederica visit the Royal Capital. However, their trip was interrupted by Witch Cultists whose aims were unknown. Reinhard captured the surviving cultists and took them in.

7 BA[]

  • Felt and Rom acquire a tavern formerly inhabited by thugs for themselves and decide to repurpose it into the Stolen Goods Warehouse.

Roughly 6 BA[]

Roughly 4 BA[]

  • Before Ferris’s training officially ends, Garitch Fabless was murdered by a student of his who wanted to become the next Blue. At Garitch’s state funeral, the student, who attempted to utilize curse arts to kill Ferris, was himself killed by Marcos Gildark. When Ferris was offered to succeed Garitch as the next Blue, he denied the offer, leaving the seat unfilled for a few years.

2 BA to 8-9 months BA[]

  • At the suggestion of the Royal Treatment Center and Fourier’s insistence, Ferris becomes a member of the Royal Guard.
  • One by one, the members of the royal family begin contracting an incurable disease of unknown origin.
  • Ferris’s probationary period ended close to the time that Fourier collapsed and was confirmed to be afflicted by the very same disease himself.
  • Zabinel Lugunica, the first confirmed royal to have contracted the disease, dies a month after the disease was discovered.
  • For several months, the royals continue to die out. When Fourier reaches death’s door, he has one last conversation with Ferris and passes away on Crusch’s lap in the garden where he first laid eyes on her. Fourier’s death is treated as a footnote in comparison to King Randohal Lugunica’s death.

8-9 months BA to 0 AA[]

  • The Council of Wise Men, with Miklotov McMahon as their representative, assume control of the country as a provisional government after the royal family perishes. They express more concern over the termination of the country’s covenant with Volcanica than the end of the Lugunica family.
  • Baron Leip Barielle announces that the Dragon History Stone foretold of a process to select a new monarch, the Royal Selection. They begin to test nobility to see if any of them can make the Dragon Insignia light up to become a candidate, and Duchess Crusch Karsten is discovered as the first candidate in this way.

He is allowed to remain under a few select conditions. He stays at House Juukulius for an extended period of time to wait for Reinhard. A few days pass, and Chisha Gold arrives in Lugunica to retrieve Gramdart. The viscount attempted to seek asylum in Lugunica by bestowing the flying dragon taming technique to the Six Tongues, but ultimately failed when Cecilus captured him. Before the two Divine Generals brought Gramdart back to Vollachia, Cecilus was able to engage in the duel he sought with Reinhard. Their match ends in a draw.
  • Anastasia Hoshin visits House Juukulius as part of a business trip and discovers that she meets the criteria to become the third candidate. Later, she has a meeting with the Council of Wise Men, who are hesitant to allow her entry into the Royal Selection due to her status as a foreigner. Julius Juukulius recommends Reinhard to become her knight, but she decides that she will not participate. Julius attempts to convince her otherwise but fails. After visiting the inn she was staying at, he pledges that he will offer to become her knight instead, which Anastasia accepts, having only held out because she wanted Julius as her knight.
  • Roswaal confirms that Emilia can make the Dragon Insignia shine, thereby making her the fourth candidate.

  • That evening, Felt and Reinhard have dinner at Russell’s mansion, where they resume their earlier conversation and talk about how the changes are comparable to what was occurring in the world 400 years ago. In addition, they also discussed then-recent signs of civil unrest in the Vollachia Empire, heretic hunts of Gusteko, and actions of the mayors of Kararagi.

Roughly 1 year and 5 months AA[]
