Mad Max: Fury Road

Mad Max: Fury Road

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE BLACK & CHROME EDITION

So a few weeks, a small group here on Letterboxd for some unexplicable reason that goes beyond me decided to all revisit this film. I was precisely looking to do this but I guess I ended up giving up to the social (network) pressure. But instead of revisiting the same version I've seen countless times and adore, wasting precious time I could spend watching a new unseen movie, I found me the fifth paw to the cat and actually get to see the special Black and White version of the movie and see if it still hold up...

...and it does! Kinda....

The good thing the movie has going for it is the fact, you know, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and phrases like "Art is subjective" have become widely popular in our postmodern society. But there's an argument to be made this is OBJECTIVELY the best action film EVER. When you look for the requirements that makes an action film what it is, this one checks all the boxes and more. It has mindless fun, crazy practical stunts that blow your socks off, ambition, fantastic set pieces, Steve Vai playing the guitar, iconic characters besides the already iconic lead; but it also has a depth and while its message may feel a bit too on-the-nose, it still works perfectly in this whole scenario and doesn't actually overshadows the main narrative but reinforces and brings some purpose. People are claiming for more Furiosa, and not only SJW or hardcore feminists, but even those in the opposite of the spectrum, making her character archive what only a few like Ripley, Sarah Connor and so on have reached in film history.

Speaking of characters, both physically and visually in regards to this new edition, I love how the black and white (especially) makes Immortan Joe much sinister as her skin gets much pale and the paint in his eyes turn black giving him a much corpsy look making him more of a grim figure. On the other hand, in terms of colors, which played a MAJOR role on the original movie, as its to be expected they are gone and in some ways I did miss them, though the impact they have in me was such that even when they were not there, my mind couldn't stop at times painting the scenes and adding the color.

Last but not least, this has nothing to do with this version but the music is really hard to skip. Though I know Tom has been making music for so long (his rendition of "A Little Less Conversation" still resounds to this date), there's another argument to be made this began a new chapter on his career. His brand of sound that has been making his wave into other projects like the main theme song for "Wonder Woman" or "Alita: Battle Angel," and while they are all good, still nothing can't compare to his work here. Every track in here is brilliant. It increases the excitement to new levels that gives the enough pull to make this the masterpiece that it is.

All in all, while specifically this black and chrome edition at times it feels lackluster in terms of its wild visuals, it still enough good thanks to a film that never stops, always going full engines to the top of the echelon, breaking any archetypes and stereotypes along the way.
