Revisiting this before watching Furiosa this weekend! I hope the aspects I love are maintained or even surpassed in Furiosa !
Cinematography & visuals: Shot predominantly with practical effects, the film’s use of wide-angle lenses captures the vast, desolate beauty of the post-apocalyptic wasteland. The dynamic camera work, including the kinetic use of handheld shots and smooth tracking sequences, immerses the audience in the chaos of high-speed chases and intense action. The bold color palette—contrasting the vibrant orange of the desert with the stark blue of the night—enhances the surreal, otherworldly atmosphere of the film.
Production design: The world-building in Fury Road is incredibly detailed, from the rusted, cobbled-together vehicles to the intricate costumes. Each faction, from the War Boys to the Vuvalini, is visually distinct, their attire and equipment telling a story of survival and adaptation in a harsh environment. The War Rig, Doof Wagon, and other vehicles are meticulously designed and constructed, each becoming a character in their own right. This commitment to real-world effects over CGI adds a tangible, visceral quality to the film that is often missing in contemporary action movies.
Sound design: The roar of engines, the clanging of metal, and the explosive crashes are all meticulously crafted to heighten the sense of immersion.
