An operatic piece of action cinema. It feels more like a piece of music than a real story, and functions so well on a purely visceral level that it is genuinely moving. The idea of a director returning to his franchise thirty years later to deliver what is easily the best film in that franchise is so crazy and nearly unheard of, but that is exactly what George Miller does here, and the results couldn't be more satisfying. After a first film that was solid enough for its small budget, a second film that was pretty damn good, and a third film that missed the mark, Miller comes roaring back with one of the greatest action movies ever made, and it holds up as well on the fourth viewing as it did on the first. This may even be my best viewing of the film yet. I don't necessary get anything new out of it, but dammit if it doesn't deliver every time.
