I don't think I've found a film that I know I love, but I'm struggling to explain why it's so good. Mad Max: Fury Road does not have the best story and it doesn't have the strongest characters, but all of this is forgotten once you get the sense of adrenaline that underlies even the slower scenes of the film. Every frame of Fury Road is a masterclass in visual storytelling and a thing of beauty visually. Unlike a lot of big-budget spectacles of recent years, this never feels like an algorithmic product developed by studios for financial results, but rather displays a massive, uncompromising, unreal vision from George Miller.
It's pretty unique that Miller's way of telling the story is not through the thin screenplay or limited dialogue, but rather the highly immersive visuals. With CGI only being used sparingly, the practical effects look absolutely astounding and add a certain realism to the action. It probably should come to no surprise that the story was crafted through storyboards rather than an actual script, allowing for the spectacular visuals to take charge of the story and enhance it to something that feels entirely original and innovative. When visual spectacle is used this well in enhancing the film and worldbuilding, it seems illogical to give it a low score.
As one of the few action movies of the last decade that truly seem like a game changer, this may also be one of the most rewatchable films of all time. Even if you don't usually like big-budget blockbusters that much, this is still a must-watch for all its incredible technical achievements and wonder that the film presents, especially the practical effects.
