Nervous Habits’s review published on Letterboxd:
The trajectory of George Miller’s career and creative path is an interesting one that’s for sure. He’s a director whose style is distinguishable but yet you can’t really nail him down to a genre because he’s really never made the same kind of movie twice. None of the original Mad Max films are similar at all. The first one is George Miller’s musings on a world after the collapse of civilization due to the melding pot of socialization completely caving in on itself and the subsequent fizzling out of industrial infrastructure. The second being a pulpy post-apocalyptic action film that I think the franchise’s tone is all around associated with. The whole Road Warrior aesthetic is born in Mad Max 2 after all. The third being more of a fun adventure movie in lieu of Lucas or Speilberg with its whimsical nature and long drawn out segments of locations being put to full use. I would say Fury Road pays homages to its predecessors by nodding to the previous films in the franchise by sharing elements, tropes, and plot points but still manages to be its own thing entirely by being a off the rails all encompassing action film with a fine eye for characterization. The film is essentially a story about finding hope in a world where salvation seems damn near impossible. Asking if survival is as important as living. But let’s not forget it’s also just a really badass movie with so much thrills and beaming with energy. We see such a glorious display of practical effects and so much jaw dropping stunt work that my brain personally couldn’t pick between getting caught up in the fun and excitement or taking the time to appreciate every little detail in front of me. How grand everything is in scope is something that is worth taking a moment just to marvel at. Big budget filmmaking at its finest. Gotta make every dollar count after all.
