Synopsis[]

The Demon King has been defeated, and the victorious hero party returns home before disbanding. The four—mage Frieren, hero Himmel, priest Heiter, and warrior Eisen—reminisce about their decade-long journey as the moment to bid each other farewell arrives. But the passing of time is different for elves, thus Frieren witnesses her companions slowly pass away one by one.

Before his death, Heiter manages to foist a young human apprentice called Fern onto Frieren. Driven by the elf's passion for collecting a myriad of magic spells, the pair embarks on a seemingly aimless journey, revisiting the places that the heroes of yore had visited. Along their travels, Frieren slowly confronts her regrets of missed opportunities to form deeper bonds with her now-deceased comrades.

Title[]

The origin of the manga's Japanese title, (そう) (そう) のフリーレン Sōsō no Furīren?, is described by Shogakukan's editor-in-charge—Katsumasa Ogura—in an interview with MANTANWEB. He reveals that the title was decided upon by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe after it was put forward as an idea by the deputy editor-in-chief at an editorial meeting.[2]

Sōsō no Furīren has been given the English subtitle "Beyond Journey's End" in the official translation by Viz Media.[1] For the English-speaking market in Asia, Shogakukan Asia has given Frieren the English subtitle "Remnants Of The Departed."[3] This hints at the content of the manga exploring the life of the heroes after the defeat of the Demon King. The Japanese characters (そう) ?, lit. "funeral" or "to bury"」 and (そう) ?, lit. "to send" or "to escort"」 read together as "attending a funeral" or "final farewell to the dead". Sōsō no Furīren can also be understood as wordplay, translating to "Frieren the Slayer," which is used in the chapter title of and within Chapter 17 as the demons' moniker for Frieren. "Frieren the Slayer" is also the title of one of the tracks composed by Evan Call for the anime's Original Soundtrack.

Notes[]

  • In the Frieren: Beyond Journey's End debut issue, two chapters were released.
  • Releases spanning two cells refer to double issues (e.g. 27-28 in 2020 and 3-4 in 2024), which accounts for a two-week period where there is a single release the first week and the magazine goes on break the following week. Excluding the debut issue for Frieren, all double issues only include one chapter.
  • Issue 53 of Weekly Shonen Sunday is rarely necessitated by years where the magazine is published across fifty-three calendar weeks. The only currently recorded instance of this during the serialization of Frieren occurs in 2024.[4]
