Summary[]
Macht attacks the carriage of a nobleman heading towards the Fortress City of Weise and kills all of the noble's guards. This nobleman is Glück, the feudal lord of Weise. With the demon's blade by his neck, Glück fearlessly requests to smoke one last cigarette, which intrigues Macht and they converse.
Macht tells Glück about his quest to understand foreign emotions. When he learns of the demon's preoccupation, Glück details the history of his life. He is the ruler of the Fortress City of Weise, which has long been plagued with corruption. Yet he did not take any action against the corruption and the suffering of the people until his son was murdered by the other nobles for publicly pleading for them to improve the city. Because of his son's death, Glück became determined to change Weise for the better, resorting to multiple assassinations of the corrupted nobles in power. When Macht questions the reason he is retelling this, Glück reveals that he is negotiating with the demon. Glück will teach Macht the emotions he does not understand, but only on a condition. Macht must assassinate the allies of the nobles who are in power and help him gain control of Weise. Macht accepts the condition and proceeds to eliminate all of Glück's political opponents.
Plot Details[]
The chapter opens with a monologue from Macht saying he has attacked the carriage of a nobleman heading to the Fortress City of Weise out of a whim. This person happen to be the feudal lord of Weise, Glück. After seeing him kill all of his guards, Glück tells him they were all excellent subordinates whom he did not expect to get wiped out so easily. Macht asks if those subordinates were trained in "killing people," to which Glück asks if it that was bad. The demon says he does not know, but that those trained in killing people are ill-suited to battle with demons. Since demons' physiology and reaction speed are on a different level than humans, those who cannot shake the habits of killing humans will not be able to adjust to the discrepancy. The nobleman notes the information and asks Macht what it would take for him to die. He reaches into his jacket for something, which Macht recognizes as a threat and responds by bringing his sword up to the nobleman's neck.
However, the nobleman only calmly pulls out his cigarette box and asks to have one last smoke, not deterred by the demon's threat. Macht obliges him, commenting how despite not having the airs of a murderer, Glück has the eyes of one. The noble says it is because he has ordered the deaths of many political rivals, though noting that they were much more despicable than he is. When he says he has been burdened with guilt for the evils he has committed, Macht's interest is piqued, and he tells Glück about the emotions he has been looking for.
Glück appears contemplative, asking the demon if he has concepts of good and evil. When Macht does not understand, Glück comments that his was a much happier existence. He launches into an explanation of Weise's history. The Fortress City of Weise is a corrupted place, where disgraced nobles from the Empire settle and continue their struggles for power and influence. Although Glück is the feudal lord in name, another noble family and their allies hold actual power. They neglect the administration of the city and sabotage its citizens to enrich themselves. Even though Glück was dismayed about the situation, he had never once taken action. Instead, his son had made a public appeal to the nobles of Weise to help the city, for which they assassinated him and staged it like a suicide. At the time, Glück wondered how such a terrible act could be done so callously, but he says it is so easy that "even an idiot could do it" after ordering another's death himself.
Macht asks if he was avenging his son. Noting that the demon understands the concept of "revenge," Glück does not deny it, but he claims his goal is carrying out his son's wish to make Weise a better place to live. His cigarette runs out at this admittance. Macht asks Glück why he has told the demon this. Glück replies that he is negotiating with the demon. Since Glück's life has been filled with malice, he would be able to teach Macht about the emotions he lacked. However, in return, Macht must work for him and get rid of his political opponents, who are incredibly cunning and cautious. Glück tells Macht they are extremely well guarded by those trained in "killing people."
Macht accepts the condition and proceeds to eliminate the members of the noble family in power within half a year. This noble then comes to question Glück about the deaths of his relatives, but Glück makes a show of ignorance, saying he will help look into the ones responsible. When the other noble accuses him of playing dumb, Glück reminds him what he had said when Glück's son had just died and claims that the situation was exactly the same as back then. He then dismisses the other noble, telling him to rest easy and remember to lock his doors.
On the balcony of his mansion with Macht by his side, Glück tells Macht that he plans to have the demon work for him on the front stage as well. At first Macht replies rather promptly, making Glück restate that he is the feudal lord of Weise. With an affected smile, Macht replies in a changed manner of speech towards his new "master."
