Reunion (さい) (かい) Saikai? is the one hundred and eighth chapter of Kanehito Yamada and Abe Tsukasa's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

Summary[]

Fifty-three years before the death of Himmel the Hero, the Hero Party is in the Kino Pass. The Hero Party trek back from the monument to the main road, only to find a slain unit of imperial soldiers. They are suddenly accosted by Zart the Remnant, a demon who has sensed Frieren's space-time meddling. Himmel engages in battle with Zart, but he manages to slip behind the front lines and casts his teleportation spell on Fireren, sending her high into the sky in an era where she cannot use her flight magic freely.

Plot Details[]

Fifty-three years before the death of Himmel the Hero, seven years after the heroes began their quest, the Hero Party is in the Northern Plateau, specifically the Kino Pass. Frieren, who has been sent back in time to the moment she last touched the monument while traveling with the Hero Party, follows the party as Himmel decides that they will be heading back. When Heiter questions how they will manage to return, Himmel states that he has marked trees. Before she leaves the monument, Frieren verifies one more time that she isn't under some kind of illusion magic—she has in fact returned to the same place in Kino Pass that she visited with Himmel and the others over eighty years ago.

Frieren spends the rest of the trek deep in thought. She wonders if she truly has traveled back in time; while that would break causality, almost nothing about the magic of the Goddess is known. The most simple explanation would be that the spell on the monument caused her to go back to a previous moment when she had touched the monument, and given this simplest explanation, the only problem remains how to return to her present time, as just touching the monument did nothing. She briefly considers asking Himmel and the others for advice, but reconsiders when she realizes that her actions may change history, and thus the future.

As a result of her deliberations, the rest of the Hero Party decide that Frieren must be out of sorts because deciphering the monument didn't go as she wanted. This leads Heiter to scold them for always spoiling her. He then attempts to discipline Frieren for always making them take detours, but to the entire party's surprise, Frieren apologizes to Heiter. Shocked at her apology, Heiter immediately forgives her and offers her candy, leading Himmel and Eisen to call him out for spoiling her too.

The party continue to trek back to the main road. Once they get close, Himmel asks Frieren to cast a locator spell to find a shortcut back to the main road. As it would be faster to fly into the sky and take a look, Frieren asks if she should just do that instead, but the Hero Party only look at her in confusion, leading Frieren to realize that humanity doesn't know how to use flight magic yet at the time of the Hero Party's journey, limiting the spells she is able to cast.

The Hero Party finally make it back to the main road around sunset, only to find the corpses of imperial soldiers. They and their wagons look like they've fallen from the sky. As they inspect the dead soldiers, all of a sudden, they are accosted by a demon from behind. Himmel immediately reacts and draws his sword, and the entire party prepares to fight. From the backline, Frieren wonders when the demon managed to creep up behind the party.

The demon observes that Frieren must have touched the Monument of the Goddess, meaning she must be behind the space-time meddling. While this confuses Himmel, the demon tells him it doesn't matter, as he plans on slaughtering the entire party anyways. This leads Himmel to agree that conversation with a demon is unnecessary, and the two both cut their words short. The demon introduces himself as Zart the Remnant, serving Grausam the Miraculous, one of the Seven Sages of Destruction. Himmel immediately charges at Zart faster than the eye can see. However, despite his speed and the strength of his attack, which levels several trees, Zart is able to disappear and evade the attack.

Zart then reappears in the backline of the party behind Frieren. He touches Frieren and she is sent thousands of meters into the sky, past the cloudline, with the sun and the horizon around her as she falls. According to the Great Mage Flamme's notes, the difference between demons' magic and humanity's magic is vast, and even skilled mages thought that the magic used by talented demons was like something out of a fairy tale. Teleportation, Zart's spell, is something that humans can't even prove exists at the current time and has a powerful offensive use. Without flight magic, a free fall can easily kill any mage of the current era.

Frieren doesn't remember encountering Zart on their quest to defeat the Demon King, and he likely won't be an easy opponent for the Hero Party either. She muses that if she could use magic freely, she wouldn't have any trouble. Since she cannot, as she free falls through the sky, Frieren wonders what she should do.
