Diagoldze—The Spell to Transmute All Creation into Gold万物 (ばんぶつ) 黄金 (おうごん) () える魔法 (まほう) (ディーアゴルゼ) Banbutsu wo ōgon ni kaeru mahō (Di Agoruze)? is the eighty-second chapter of Kanehito Yamada and Abe Tsukasa's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

Summary[]

Denken invites Frieren's Party into the hut prepared for the barrier keepers, explaining that barely anyone uses it. Frieren remarks it is because the Golden Land and Macht naturally makes mages nervous. Fern is also anxious and explains that even though the Golden Land is such a huge region magically turned into gold, she cannot feel any mana coming from it. She says that the Golden Land is detected as a mass of pure, solid gold instead of magic. Frieren talks about Macht's specialized magic, the spell to transmute all creation into gold: Diagoldze - an irreversible curse which is imperceptible as magic. It is because of this unique power that Macht is considered the most powerful Sage of Destruction. She concludes that it is impossible to counter his magic and says that Serie's presence is required. Denken begins to tell them about the information he gathered, but Frieren asks him to start from the conclusion. Denken then says if they start from the conclusion, then the conclusion is that it is impossible to defeat Macht.

Meanwhile, first-class mage Lernen and second-class mage Edel are on a wagon. Edel, seeming exhausted, asks Lernen why he went to great lengths to assist Denken. Lernen reveals that they are old friends and were fellow Imperial Mages. When Lernen was expelled from his position, Denken was the only person who defended him until the end, which made Lernen feel indebted. Yet, through many years, like Denken delaying his return to his hometown, Lernen delayed repaying Denken. Therefore, when Denken finally decided to return, Lernen also decided to help him. Edel comments that it was too late, to which Lernen agrees, saying "There is no such thing as "someday" in our lives," and that they should have realized sooner.

Plot Details[]

Denken shows Frieren and her party into the house prepared for the barrier keepers. He informs them that even though the facility is prepared, almost none of the previous keepers have used it. Frieren is in agreement, commenting that even with the barrier in place, the place is still too close to the Golden Land and Macht, making most mages nervous as a result. Fern makes an uncomfortable expression as she is sitting on a chair inside. Stark notices her discomfort and asks her what is wrong, as she has been pale ever since they arrived near the Golden Land. Denken apologizes for not foreseeing the problem that most mages would find the Golden Land extremely uncanny. Stark, who is unaffected, asks Frieren what is going on. The latter comments that having a warrior like Stark is reassuring in this situation. Stark then guesses that it has something to do with mana, since it is something only mages would understand. He wonders if Macht is emitting an enormous amount of mana, but Fern denies it, saying it is actually the opposite. She cannot sense a hint of mana coming from the Golden Land. No matter how powerful the barrier might be, Macht's mana should be detectable even at that distance if he were truly able to transmute such a large area into gold through magic. However, mana detection does not register the Golden Land as something transformed by magic, but as an enormous mass of solid gold in its purest form.

Frieren confirms Fern's perception to be correct, calling the phenomenon ominous: even though it is the result of magic, it cannot be perceived as magic. She explains Macht's magic, the sell to transmute all creation into gold: Diagoldze, a curse that can transform everything in the material world into gold. Stark recalls curses being magic of an obscure, indecipherable nature which demons and monsters use. Denken elaborates on the details, which is that only magic which sedates, petrifies or transforms the state of living or non-living matter is considered to be a "curse". Stark deduces that in order to dispel the curse, they will need to have a priest who can use the Goddess's magic. Denken then corrects him, saying it only applies to ordinary curses. Frieren tells him that during the era of endless war with the Demon King's Army, Macht had transmuted countless heroes in just the Northern Lands alone, but even up until now none of them have been saved. Diagoldze cannot be undone even by the Goddess's magic, hence it is considered to be the strongest curse. The reason why Macht is considered the most powerful Sage of Destruction is because, in addition to being irreversible, his magic cannot be obstructed with defensive magic or evaded, as it is not detectable. She concludes that there is not a single prospect of victory, insisting that they need to call Serie if they are to challenge him.

Denken chooses this moment to interrupt her and requests to to relay the information he has acquired. He informs them that the previous barrier keeper, first-class mage Lernen, had launched an investigation inside the Golden Land and passed what he managed to gather through the memories of his partner, second-class mage Edel. As he attempts to go on, Frieren stops him and demands he start from the conclusion.

At the same time, Lernen and Edel are on a carriage heading back towards Äußerst after passing the information to Denken near the Golden Land. An exhausted Edel leaning over the carriage's side complains about the investigation in the Golden Land, and Lernen reassures her that they will be near Äußerst soon and that it was worth it to deliver intel that may help Denken. Edel notices that Lernen is being quite supportive of Denken and asks why. The elder mage tells her it is a long story, to which Edel prompts him to go on, saying they have nothing but time until they reach Äußerst.

Lernen begins recounting his history with Denken. When they were young, both Denken and Lernen served as mages in the Imperial Army. Although they had different personalities, they got along with each other very well and had fun working together. However, Lernen was soon expelled from his position despite his talents because he was not good at socializing with others. Yet Denken had stood by him until the end, which made Lernen feel indebted. He promised himself to one day return the favor.

The first-class mage goes on to praise Denken as someone who is zealous, passionate, and extremely devoted to his wife. He recalls that he used to listen to Denken speak fondly of his wife with a strained smile on his face. Even after his wife had passed away, Denken still mentioned her and his plans to return to his hometown. Lernen remarks how nostalgic it felt, since as time passed, Denken no longer talked about returning to his hometown again, and he had not done so for half a century. He only finally decided to do so after Lernen informed him that his hometown had been engulfed by the Golden Land.

Lernen concluds it was the reason why he had gone so far to help Denken to return to his real hometown, not the transmuted the Golden Land of the present. After a moment of mutual silence, Lernen asks Edel if she thought they were too late. Edel agrees, saying that too much time has already passed. Lernen concurs, but cannot blame Denken for delaying, either. He laments the fact that both he and Denken failed to realize a simple truth when they were young, that because they are humans, their lifespans are limited. "Someday" is not a time that exists in their lives. He admits that although he could have lent his aid to Denken at any time during the last fifty years, he himself also delayed returning the favor. This is the reason why he decided to do all he could to help his friend now, seeing it as the only opportunity left as both their lives neared the end. He calls it his final struggle as a feeble old man, and believes that Denken will show him a magnificent, heroic battle that he himself is not capable of attaining.

Back in the cabin for the barrier keeper of the Golden Land, Denken accedes to Frieren's request to start from the conclusion and declares that it is impossible to defeat Macht. Frieren declares that the case is closed, but Stark implores her to hear the rest of the story.
