The Sword of the Hero (ゆう) (しゃ) (つるぎ) Yūsha no tsurugi? is the one hundred and fourteenth chapter of Kanehito Yamada and Abe Tsukasa's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

Summary[]

Right after the events of the previous chapter, after defeating the Abyssal Dragon, the Hero Party searches the abandoned village but finds no clues. They continue their search and arrive in a newly settled village, where a villager directs them to a dwarf blacksmith named Kiesel. Kiesel states that his old village used to have some books on the Goddess's Monuments, and he'll tell them the location if he can take a closer look at the Hero's Sword. Himmel allows him to, and readily admits that the sword is fake. Kiesel reveals that he is te one who created this forgery. He thanks Himmel for bringing the sword back to him and offers to give him a new sword worthy of the Hero free of charge, but Himmel tells him that the sword is now his partner in arms, and he will wield it until the world is at peace. Kiesel, seeing his determination, sharpens the sword instead. He then directs them to his old village, which has become a den of monsters.

Plot Details[]

Right after the events of the previous chapter, the Hero Party defeat the Abyssal Dragon and search the cathedral. Despite their efforts, they are unable to find anything in the ruins either. Eisen says their efforts were in vain, but Himmel disagrees, as by defeating the Abyssal Dragon they have helped the region become a more peaceful place. The Hero Party then resolve to proceed onward, only to realize they are missing Frieren, who has gotten trapped in another mimic.

The party then travel to other villages and settlements while talking to people along the way. They arrive at a newly settled village, so the villagers tell them there aren't many folktales. However, one of the villagers also directs the party to the dwarf blacksmith Kiesel. Kiesel is over a hundred years old, so the villager speculates that he may be able to help.

The party then go to Kiesel's dwelling. Kiesel pauses in chopping wood to greet them, and scolds Himmel for not introducing himself first. Himmel introduces himself as Himmel the Hero. Upon hearing the name, Kiesel invites them into his house. Himmel expresses surprise that Kiesel knows him, and Kiesel tells him that rumors that bring people hope spread quickly. Kiesel cites some of the Hero Party's accomplishments, from causing Aura the Guillotine to retreat to slaying Böse the Immortal. Kiesel even goes as far as to praise Himmel as the greatest Hero of all time, which incites Himmel's vanity and causes Kiesel to say that Himmel is very different from what he'd heard.

Frieren interjects and asks if Kiesel knows anything about the Monument of the Goddess. While Kiesel himself doesn't know anything about the monuments, he recalls that the chief's house in his old village used to have books about the Goddess. Heiter then asks Kiesel where his old village is located. Kiesel says he will tell them on one condition—he will tell them the location in exchange for taking a look at Himmel's sword.

While Heiter initially seems wary, Himmel says he doesn't mind and offers his sword to Kiesel. Kiesel examines the blade closely, and Himmel readily admits that his sword is a replica. Kiesel, however, already knew this, as it is revealed that Kiesel was the original blacksmith that forged the replica blade. When he had first started his career as a blacksmith, he had been commissioned to create a replica blade for a merchant from the Imperial Capital. He asks where Himmel got the sword—a village on the frontier of the Central Lands, in return for slaying monsters for a trader.

Kiesel expresses his surprise that his false blade had been on such a long journey and made its way back to him. He then tells Himmel that he has plenty of swords more worthy of him, and he'll bring some out for Himmel. Himmel interjects, but Kiesel tells him that he won't charge Himmel for the new blade. It is his way of saying thank you to Himmel for giving a forgery a whole new purpose and for bringing the sword he created back to him. However, this is not why Himmel interjected; he tells Kiesel to not get ahead of himself, as the false sword has become his partner and he intends to wield it until the Demon King is defeated. Hearing this, Kiesel sharpens the sword for Himmel instead.

After sharpening and polishing the blade, Kiesel then leads the Hero Party and points out the mountain path that leads to the village her used to live in. He warns them that the place has become a den full of monsters. The Hero Party traverse to the village and Himmel says to bring it on. He unsheathes his sword and says that clearing out the monsters is another step to bringing peace to the world with this sword.
