Faith (しん) (らい) Shinrai? is the one hundred and twelfth chapter of Kanehito Yamada and Abe Tsukasa's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

Summary[]

After escorting the merchant, the Hero Party continue seeking out information about the Monument of the Goddess. After another village proves to be a dead end, the party decides to try seeking out written records in a monastery. They travel to a monastery perched on a sheer drop-off. During one of rest stops, while Himmel and Eisen exclaim over the cliffs they are about to scale, Heiter tells Frieren about his and Himmel's shared childhood. Heiter tells Frieren that though he is a contrary person, he has decided to believe in Himmel the Hero. They then make it to the monastery, only for the monastery to be a dead end as well.

Plot Details[]

Sometime after escorting the merchant, the Hero Party arrive in another village and ask about the village's stone Monument of the Goddess. This lead also proves to be another dead end. They then camp out at night and Eisen bemoans the wild goose chase they've been led on, and when Frieren apologizes again Himmel tells her not to apologize as this sort of adventure can be fun as well.

Heiter explains that it's no surprise it's hard to find information on the monuments since they were created in the age of myth, and if there were more readily available information, then it wouldn't have remained so impervious to deciphering.

The party then speculates whether there are written records kept somewhere. Frieren says that paper doesn't last forever and can easily deteriorate, something she has a lot of experience with in the grimoires she's lost, hence the potential difficulty of finding written records. However, Heiter suggests they try a monastery, as in their training, monks will copy manuscripts.

They then head back to the village they were previously at to try to ask the location of the nearest monastery. While at the church, while Heiter prays, Himmel asks the father for the location of any nearby monasteries. The father tells them that while there is one, it's difficult to reach, but Heiter interrupts and says it's fine. He tells them that he believes the Goddess will guide them even if the path is difficult as he's prayed for that. The Hero Party then trek to the monastery, which is perched precariously at the edge of a sheer drop-off on a barely supported cliff. When Eisen questions why the monastery would be built that way, Heiter tells him that it's not uncommon for monks to live in extreme environments for their training.

Himmel initially asks if Frieren could just fly to the monastery, but she's unwilling to risk anyone seeing her. They then decide to climb, and spend the next few hours on a grueling trek to reach the monastery. At one point while the sun is setting, the four of them take a break next to a fire. While Frieren and Heiter rest, Himmel points out to Eisen that the path to the monastery is mostly up cliffs, and the two muscle-heads of the party get excited about the challenge together.

When Heiter expresses that Himmel has always been that way, Frieren reacts with confusion, as she's forgotten despite Heiter telling her numerous times that he and Himmel are from the same town. Frieren seems shocked at her own lack of knowledge, and she asks follow up questions to Heiter. Heiter tells Frieren that unlike himself, Himmel has always been optimistic. Himmel has proven Heiter's contrary self wrong every time he's doubted him, and despite being a cynical person who believes that defeating the Demon King is impossible, he has faith in Himmel the Hero and will continue following him.

Afterwards, the Hero Party scale the cliffs and make it to the monastery. Himmel and Heiter collapse at the table in the archives, exhausted, while Frieren is buried under a fallen pile of books. Despite their efforts, they do not manage to find any information in the archives. Himmel, hair ruffled, proclaims that they will proceed to their next destination, and a beleaguered Frieren wonders if he isn't being overly optimistic.
