Helios is a character from the Disney animated series, Gargoyles.
Background[]
Helios appears to show characteristics of a man with fire for his hair having the ability to produce fireballs and use them as weapons. He is also shown to have glowing red eyes with no visible pupils. He also wears a red vest over a white shirt and blue jeans, and gold bracers. Like most New Olympians, Helios did not show a sympathetic personality towards humans who arrive at the island of New Olympus.
Role in the series[]
In "The New Olympians", Helios approaches Elisa Maza whom he thinks she is a threat to the New Olympians, alongside Kiron and Taurus. Just as Elisa tries to explain that she is meaning no harm, Taurus suddenly captures her and takes her to the Senate House accusing her for being a threat. Later, Helios brings in Elisa whom he and Kiron captured in front of a large crowd at the Senate House where everyone is shocked to see a human inside. Helios later took part in a riot when he and the other New Olympians see Elisa on the streets where they threaten to kill her. During the riot, Bronx approaches him and attempts to kill him with his fireballs which Bronx dodges. However, Taurus silences the riot, arresting Elisa again for causing a riot on the streets. Later when Elisa is placed into her cell, Helios and the other citizens riot against Elisa to which during the riot, Helios throws a fireball at Elisa in her cell while trying to ask Taurus for help only for Taurus to silence the riot again. Taurus then alerts Helios to keep a check on pyrotechnics before he loses his job.
After Goliath manages to get Elisa out of her prison cell, Helios alerts Taurus that Elisa has escaped, telling him that Kiron said about Elisa being ambushed by Goliath, planning to go after Elisa being a "fugitive". Later when Elisa returns to the city of New Olympus while planning to create a diversion plan, she approaches Helios and engages into a confrontation against him, telling him that Proteus has escaped disguised as Goliath telling him to listen to her only for Helios to reject. He then throws a fireball at Elisa which the latter dodges it only for Elisa to counter him, knocking him unconscious into a street lamp while Elisa takes over his chariot.
Trivia[]
- Helios is named after the god of sun in Greek mythology who drove a fiery chariot pulling the sun across the heavens. In the original myth, Helios was the son of the titans Hyperion and Theia and the brother of Selene, goddess of the moon and Eos, the goddess of dawn. (The role of sun god was later taken over by Apollo during the Roman period).
- Helios would later share the name of an implied character from the Hercules animated series (in this case, an Olympian god).
- When "The New Olympians" was rebroadcast on Toon Disney (now Disney XD) in the United States, one instance was cut during the tussle between Elisa and Helios where the latter throws her down the sidewalk. This was likely done to tone down some of the violence.
