Coyote is a Child of Oberon and the former antagonist of the Gargoyles episode "Cloud Fathers".

Background[]

Coyote serves an obstacle to the Manhattan Clan in a similar way like what he did in his mythological counterpart. He is frequently seen in the form of a young version of Peter Maza. In addition to appearing in human form, Coyote is also capable in transforming into that of a whirlwind (also possibly in a form of that of an actual coyote). He also works subtly often through manipulation occasions such as something that would happen through coincidence than through a magical intervention.

Having the characteristics of a trickster spirit, Coyote shows a clever personality, outwitting his opponents and often making wisecracks, although he is a benevolent figure at heart, particularly caring about humans who are connected to him such as Peter Maza and uses his powers to protect them.

Role in the series[]

"Cloud Fathers"[]

Coyote first appears in his whirlwind form taking the form of a whirlwind with a coyote head, just as Coyote enters Xanatos Corporation.

In 1996, the Manhattan Clan (with Peter and Beth Maza and without Goliath and Angela) went after the impostor who is impersonating a younger version of Peter, which Bronx pounced on him and the impostor was thought to be framing Xanatos. Coyote argued with Beth about the traditional Kachina dance and Peter Maza soon became verious about him, thinking that he was supposed to be captured by a tribe of Kachina dancers, but turned into whirlwind before being alerted.

After Elisa, Beth, Peter, and Bronx saved Goliath and Angela from being killed, Beth's theory said that the impostor was actually Coyote. At a territory with the Kachina dancers, Coyote disguised himself as one of the natives to avoid being caught, which as Peter, Beth, and Elisa approach a group of Kachina dancers where Beth and Peter discuss about what the Kachina dance is all about while Coyote himself wearing the Coyote dancer costume appraoches the Mazas, only for the latter captured by Coyote 4.0. Back with Goliath, Peter discusses with him that Xanatos was attempting to save Coyote from arrest, leading Beth and Elisa to rescue him.

Meanwhile at Xanatos Corporation, Xanatos explained to Coyote who is being held hostage about how the Coyote robot was never rebuilt with the Cauldron of Life. While conflicting Xanatos, Coyote gets placed inside the robot named "Coyote". As the Manhattan Clan tries to rescue him, Coyote 4.0 attacked the Manhattan Clan in combat to which during the battle, Peter Maza wore a Kachina dancer costume representing Coyote while Coyote 4.0 was discussing with Xanatos about the wrong Kachina being caught. Angela soon manages to rescue Coyote in time, getting him out of Coyote 4.0 and Coyote was able to defeat the Coyote robot.

With Coyote 4.0 defeated, Coyote approaches Peter and explains to him that he and Peter are connected just as he despairs with him as an apology. Coyote later transforms back into his whirlwind form to take care of Arizona while the Mazas visit Carlos' grave.

"The Gathering: Part One"[]

Despite his return to take care of Arizona, Coyote returns with the other Children of Oberon.

Trivia[]

  • Coyote's voice actor, Gregg Rainwater, also voiced Natsilane.
