So since my LAST post:

- I caught a cold on vacation
- which turned into a sinus infection when we got home
- just as I felt better, husband caught a cold
- just as husband started to feel better, Hypatia caught a cold with fever
- right about this time I started having mysterious joint pain
- which was explained today when Hypatia's cold turns out to be FIFTH DISEASE and apparently I managed not to get it as a kid HA HA AWESOME

APART from the endless courses of disease I have also:

- (mostly) coded a webcam-based Python wand recognizer so we can use our Harry Potter Wizarding World wands at home to trigger IFTTT events

- ripped the bezel off a spare monitor and taken it to framing store so I can turn it into a wizarding family portrait

(NO REALLY IT'S GOING TO BE AWESOME LOOK:

- obtained (and now thrown out) a printer with invisible ink which instead of printing things in invisible ink just leaked invisible ink all over our lovely built-in office counter (fortunately, the ink is in fact invisible, so no one will ever know unless they tote along a blacklight for inspection)

PS if you think this is so I can print an invisible ink marauders map that will only appear in response to someone using their wand and solemnly swearing they are up to no good HOW DID YOU GUESS

(as I described all this in chat, [personal profile] elynross said, "I'm starting to get the feeling you have a deadline" HA HA HA it's like she knows me)

So yeah, I only just finished rewriting a script treatment a month and a half past when I said I would and have not touched my novel in a month. On the bright side when I finally reopened it today and re-read it, a quarter of the way through the first chapter I knew what was going to happen in the rest of the book, which I have been wondering for some time now, so that was nice.

Oh and I imported over [community profile] sga_flashfic so if you have old links, update them! Also I banged in http://ao3.org/collections/sga_flashfic so please upload your stories to the AO3 and pop them into the collection! If you happen to be able to throw a few bucks at the AO3 for the fundraising drive that would be pretty cool too. I mention there is an AO3 HAT among the goodies and it says "You have already left kudos here" on it! <3 <3 <3

What I have NOT done: seen Fate of the Furious! So DO NOT SPOIL I!

I have set up a Harry Potter Fanworks community to have a place to post things, and they gave me MORE invites, so come here either to join the comm or to get an Imzy invite (or just to see the awesome banner lim made me):

http://imzy.com/hpfanworks

Also, Yuletide is officially on Imzy at http://imzy.com/yuletide_admin!

Re Imzy, I feel like I have gotten the vibe of the place and I generally like it. I have heard that their main concept was to be reddit without all the horrible, and it is oriented around communities and ephemeral conversation. It is definitely better for conversations and knowing who is who and what they are saying than Tumblr, and I might like it better than journaling, we'll see. I'm waiting to see mainly how they handle notifying people of activity because that will determine how conversations flourish.

Also right now the flood of notifications and automated imzy posts about how many people are in! your! community! is wildly annoying and creating a lot of noise that drowns out the actually interesting signal of conversations I want to pay attention to, but the volume is clearly related to heaps of us trying it out at once.

And they are of course a commercial startup and if it goes amazing then in five years it gets sold, and if it doesn't then in five years it gets shut down, but because it's ephemeral conversation, I don't mind so much. It's clearly not a place to archive anything, but hey, that's what AO3 is for anyway.

GUYS how great was that show! SO GREAT! I have stayed up too late chatting and am wiped, but I am still buzzing and happy with how awesome the whole show was. There was not a single real dud for me, and I think it's because as I said after, even though not every vid was a vid of MY heart, it felt to me clearly that every vid came from SOMEONE'S heart.

My own heart-favorites were (unsurprisingly) [livejournal.com profile] sisabet's Clark/Lex vid in which they HAVE A BABY TOGETHER (it's not like that's straight from my id or anything cough), as well as the fantastic vid Satisfied for Underground by [personal profile] serrico, which was just a solid, straight-to-the-gut punch of a vid. Brilliant. I also really liked [livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl's Aphrodisiac which spoke to my own headcanon of the Force as something vaguely scary you can turn on but you can't necessarily turn off, and also [personal profile] gwyn and [personal profile] cesperanza's Hallo Spaceboy Captain America vid, and [livejournal.com profile] milly's awesome The Martian vid to Pompeii.

But honestly, this year it's like picking from an embarrassment of riches. I can't wait to discuss ALL the vids tomorrow and I am full of glee. \o/ So much awesome Star Wars, all different! Jessica Jones! Scooby Doo! Dragon Age! haha I literally wept with laughter at the Sims vid. Such a terrific variety of types of vids also.

And here is MY vid, which will shock ALL OF YOU A LOT by being a Harry Potter vid (Draco POV, and Harry/Draco in my own head anyway).

Download link on the AO3, and tumblr post! Heaps of thanks to Ces for betaing, and as always all fb loved. :)

And now I am going to fall into bed! YAY

With many thanks to [personal profile] cesperanza! Also I want to mention that this was initially inspired by the current [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair which has the theme "pets" going, but I missed the deadline to post my own prompt *facepalm*. But claiming prompts is still open, so if you want ideas, head over there, or watch the comm for the stories! :D

“Listen to you!” Ron said. “He’s got to get through a month with the Dursleys and a month at Malfoy Manor. With Draco Malfoy.”

“Yeah, thanks,” Harry said, because he hadn’t just spent the last week contemplating just how much more horrible his summer holidays were about to be than they’d ever been before.

astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)
Surely there must be an entire genre of Harry Potter stories where Harry and Draco have to split their summer across their respective homes. Does anyone have recs for same?

I have this one in my head where they get hit with some accidental curse and can't be apart for more than an hour or something and so cue the timesharing, and then obviously Draco tramples viciously all over the deeply deserving Dursleys and Harry unwillingly finds this kind of magnificent and Draco finds Harry finding him magnificent kind of magnificent and *waves hand vaguely about*

But I can't help thinking that this story must have been written already at least four or five times and maybe one of those would satisfy me. Anyone?

Also, [livejournal.com profile] bexless's picspam proves IMO that Adam is a Gryffindor who (much to the aggravation of everyone else in the house) wishes he were a Slytherin, because omg, green and silver and snakes, okay! HE BOUGHT HIS ENTIRE WARDROBE BEFORE COMING!

Also hilariously it is now confirmed he just got his nipples pierced. Step #735425 in Adam's plan to make EVERY SLASH CLICHE A REALITY.

There is a live Haiti fundraiser webcast going on right now, sponsored by a bunch of Harry Potter fansites, with donated prizes from fans and sff pros and all sorts of other neat places:
http://www.thehpalliance.org/haiti/

You can donate (to Partners In Health) on the prizes page, and choose which prizes you want your donation to make you eligible to win (I *think* the idea is, you donate via the appropriate link and they will randomly choose one of the donors via that link to win):

[livejournal.com profile] le_mousquetaire asked for SGA, McKay/Sheppard:

And Melanie C. asked for DC Comics, Tim/Kon, and this came out, which is a mashup of the Reconcilable Differences universe with a bit of the post-Infinite Crisis storyline, which is a bit of a warning if you know what happened in that storyline, and if you don't, you can highlight here: Kon has been killed saving the world, and Tim is trying to bring him back to life.

In Exchange for Your Tomorrows by [livejournal.com profile] lim, on imeem and also on YouTube and you can also download it here!

This is this amazing Snape vid she's been working on for ages, to "House of the Rising Sun" -- I'm not even into HP much lately or much of a Snape fan when I am, but wow, wow, wow. Go watch!

Also I am going to shamelessly gloat and show off this special thing -- she created this amazing Maurauders' Map out of words for the vid and then, eee, she sent me a variant that was a map of *me* -- that is, she went off everything in my LJ, etc. *glee* so so cool.

When you see this, post a little weensy excerpt from as many random works-in-progress as you can find lying around. Who knows? Maybe inspiration will burst forth and do something, um, inspiration-y. gacked from [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift.

This is wildly self-indulgent because some of these may never get done, but I give in to temptation this far to reward myself for slogging away towards the deadline when really I want to be working on these. :> Also omg, how is it Vividcon in a WEEK.

One SV, one HP xover, and eleven SPN )
astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)
I had fun on line Friday night, even if there was really not much of a party going on by the time I got to the bookstore, but it was nice out and there was a Coldstone Creamery open, and people wearing Hogwarts scarves all over, and while we were standing on line someone came by handing out these advertising cards for a martial arts dojo for kids, with picture of cute little girl on one side, cute little boy on the other, both looking very earnest in their little martial arts gis, and at the bottom on the boy's side this truly priceless ad copy: Defense Against The Dark Arts classes! Come learn how to use your "wand" against the dragon! (Quotation marks theirs!)

Being the evil-minded people we are, we laughed and laughed.

And then I stayed up until 4:30 am reading the book, and finished it Saturday morning, and have to say, spoilers for Deathly Hallows )

All right, enough of that! Where's the fanfic! Is there any Harry/Draco yet? *coughs*

Actually, I went looking on del.icio.us and while I haven't found any DH stuff yet, I did stumble on a really amazing post-HBP story by [livejournal.com profile] fourth_rose, The World of The Living, which I'm sure everyone in the fandom has read but I highly recommend to anyone like me who's been out of it for years. *g*

I also have to share this, passed along by [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth, which is [livejournal.com profile] mightygodking's hilarious page-by-page summary of DH. Read and lol.
astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)
Some history for this. Back in the year 2000, after Goblet of Fire and before the first movie, I had a few happy months in HP fandom, and among other things I wrote several connected stories in what I'm now calling The Scholomance Series. These stories didn't stand alone, the last one ended kind of brutally with blithe promises for a quick sequel, and from this I learned a very important lesson, which is that I can't post WIPs of any kind, because I cannot trust myself to stay in a fandom long enough to finish them.

Anyway, for the last seven years I've been trying to finish this last story -- I had about a quarter of it, and then it gradually got up to a half, and every so often I would take it out and noodle on it some more, usually after I got some fresh canon to get the motor running; at one point I even tried starting from scratch; but it just wouldn't go very far. I was about ready to give up, and earlier this week, [livejournal.com profile] resonant8 started clearing out her HP locker, and I decided yeah, it was time, I was going to just post it, whatever, and then I opened it up to do some formatting, and then boom, I finished it after all.

*takes victory lap, raised fists in the air*

(Oh, and then I turned the started-from-scratch version into an extra side-story.)

So, here it is, the whole thing (I suspect the new stories won't make sense without the old ones). Diverges wildly from canon after Goblet of Fire. Adult, explicit (in Prodigal), and bloody. Harry/Draco, Ron/Hermione, hints of other pairings.

The Scholomance Series

A RARE DESCENTPASSING THROUGHTHE ELEVENTH DOORKEEPER
THE SEASONLESS WORLDTHE LAST VISITPRODIGAL

And here are the two new stories, with many thanks to, I am ashamed to admit, more betas than I now remember, although I know [livejournal.com profile] elynross looked at Prodigal along the way, and [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza has gone over them for me now. ♥

The Last Visit (588 words)
It has nothing to ask you. It has only something to say.
(Note: this story fits into Prodigal -- I think it works better read first, but it's not a standalone.)

Prodigal (13,850 words)
...his greatest terror was that someone would respond to him.

omg yay
astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)
I just finished the last story in the Scholomance series. After seven years.

\o/

It is not getting posted right now because it awaits beta, and I think some minor tweaking of the very end, but I still had to squeak now that I'm no longer going to jinx myself. But, omg. The date on A Rare Descent is July 29, 2000. SEVEN YEARS. HA. When I say it's going to be finished, it's going to be finished, baby! *

And now I go to get book 7.

* ...possibly after everyone is dead or doesn't care anymore.
