I'll be looking into getting all my vids up streaming soon, but for now it's just the download. This vid was mostly made last year, had to be suspended for lack of source to do what I really wanted, and then I managed to finish it up in time for the con thanks to season 2 source. \o/ Also and not unrelated, the trailer for Merlin season 3 makes me HAPPY. :D

vids of my heart:

eta: now posted! [livejournal.com profile] sweetestdrain's amazing amazing amazing auction vid for me, Adam Lambert to Janelle Monae's Tightrope, ♥ ♥ ♥ -- SO AMAZING. I have been BURSTING with glee to share this vid ever since she sent me the first draft and I will link it and jump up and down at you all as soon as it is up and you will all be VERY HAPPY with me, seriously. It *dances*, you guys. The whole vid just swings its hips and bops its head and twirls and beams at you in exactly the way the Adam in my head does, and it is so very sparkly. \o/

eta: now posted! [livejournal.com profile] sisabet's genius Clark/Lex vid to Bad Romance. OMG. It is like, the vid of the strange and complicated space where these characters live in my head, a melange of the gloriously cracked-out Silver Age (Lex in his purple and green!), Superfriends and the Legion of Doom, the post-Crisis reboot with LexCorp, the movies, the Superman cartoon, Lex Luthor: Man of Steel, and Smallville. And, haha, I can identify where every single clip in this comes from. possibly I know that I know this because I harassed sisabet until she manually gave me the vid so I could watch it twenty times in a row on my tiny laptop and make other people watch it and, um. HAPPY

Panels:

[livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl's panel on Soviet Montage Theory was awesome, and I loved the Battleship Potemkin clips especially (heee, and her slides on whatsisname -- "hair full of video editing secrets"). ♥ Hopefully she will post the full presentation!

[livejournal.com profile] deepad's panel on vidding as choreography! Amazing amazing stuff, totally felt dead-on to me as a way to view vidding, and she has said she will be posting some resources for anyone who is interested in checking out more about choreography techniques and thinking about how to apply that to vidding.

[livejournal.com profile] dualbunny's panel on structure was also terrific, getting insights into how other vidders work, and now I would like someone to run a challenge where vidders write up a short description of their process (eg, "I vid linearly from start to finish, I tend to put in intercutting sequences, etc") and then get matched up to trade processes, and have to make a vid trying to follow someone else's process.

Vid review: Had an awesome time doing this with [livejournal.com profile] f1renze! ♥ and we reviewed ALL THE VIDS.

review ALL the vids!
(awesomeness due to hyperbole and a half)

notes about vid review )

Okay, and it is now time to go board my flight, so I will post this and dash! Yay awesome happy con! ♥
astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)
Here is a pile of recs of some of the stories I missed while away at the happiness of Vividcon and my tour date -- um, authors, I totally apologize if I have so far failed to actually comment, I read most of these on my iphone or on my laptop on the plane with no internet. D:

Adam/Kris fanfic recs plus bonus Cook/Archie rec list )

Something else very cool that went down while I was away -- Adam has set up a relationship with DonorsChoose to help fund specifically arts/music education projects, and for the first month, they have set it up so different fan groups are competing against each other, which is Machiavellian in its brilliance. [livejournal.com profile] ontd_ai_gives is coordinating the ontd_ai effort and they have lined up some really awesome projects, so if you have a few extra bucks to kick in, hop on over? They take paypal. :)

Vividcon was possibly even more amazing and fun for me than ever this year; I love the new double-sided setup for Premieres and the Sunday programming track, and haha, I turned in my manuscript Friday so afterwards I spent the whole con in a stress-free glow.

I will say that [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro has a good post up on some issues about protecting and improving the safe space of the con -- I don't know there are any easy answers, but I do think it's good to talk about this stuff and think about what answers there might be.

Related to this, I'm going to throw one thing out there: personally I would rather the con stop accepting completely anonymous vids for the Challenge show, because I think the con has now been trolled two years in a row. I'm referring to Right in Two, which I think was made by the same person who did White America last year, and IMO this vidder is making vids with a message deliberately muddled to conceal the racist intention behind them -- specifically, I think the vidder is making vids hostile to anti-racist critique of fandom. Which, whatever if that's what you want to do, but stand behind it instead of flinging shit from a safe distance and sniggering behind your hand. I don't find anonymity worthy of protection where the only consequence is that people might justifiably think you're a jerk.

That said, this is one lamer and whatever, I think they are being crushed by the tide of awesome, and moving on: have some happy vid recs!

Vividcon vid recs, yay )

Okay -- now on to organizing my Idol concert footage and pictures to post, whee. :D
astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)
From Vividcon! I basically showed up on [livejournal.com profile] therienne's doorstep in -- May? June? -- grabbed [livejournal.com profile] merryish and said, "Let's make a vid!" and together we pretty much hounded [livejournal.com profile] therienne and [livejournal.com profile] aka_arduinna and [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza into making their vid in self-defense as we sat at Merry's computer and made gleeful noises over how sparkly Adam is. *g*

And tonight we are off to see him live here in Boston with [livejournal.com profile] bayleaf and [livejournal.com profile] giddygeek! \o/ I has the shiny camera but I make no promises that I will not be too distracted to videotape/take pictures. Will be tweeting from @intimations, and also we might try to livecast Adam and Kris's sets if our batteries last, in which case the livecast will show up at http://qik.com/astolat/ later tonight. Tweet me if you will be there!

Meanwhile, I haven't been watching SGA regularly for a while, so the cancellation doesn't hit me in the same gut way it once would have, but wtf, this came out of NOWHERE. In Exchange for Your Tomorrows by [livejournal.com profile] lim, on imeem and also on YouTube and you can also download it here!

This is this amazing Snape vid she's been working on for ages, to "House of the Rising Sun" -- I'm not even into HP much lately or much of a Snape fan when I am, but wow, wow, wow. Go watch!

Also I am going to shamelessly gloat and show off this special thing -- she created this amazing Maurauders' Map out of words for the vid and then, eee, she sent me a variant that was a map of *me* -- that is, she went off everything in my LJ, etc. *glee* so so cool.

Hey, for those of you interested in vidding history -- Kandy Fong's Both Sides Now, the first ever vid (in fact it's a slideshow set to music, because it predates even the VCR) is now online (by permission).

Also: if you are into Sam/Dean and you are not reading along with [livejournal.com profile] fleshflutter's ongoing mini-nano story The Dark Side of the Moon, man are you missing out. There is something about this experience of reading a just-right-sized chunk of story every single day that is very different from the usual WIP-reading experience (which normally I prefer to avoid) and it is just deliciously hot and a whole lot of fun.
astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)
Back from Vividcon! \o/ I have neither energy nor time for a full report, but wow, I just had such a great con. ♥

Also, I must report that [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn and [livejournal.com profile] seperis are evil, evil people. :( :( :(

Here are five vids which you should watch the second the vidders put them online:
[livejournal.com profile] sisabet's Falling For The First Time (SPN) -- My auction vid! \o/ I feel I have done good in the world. lie in wait

[livejournal.com profile] dualbunny's Cosmia (Pan's Labyrinth) -- Just dazzling. It feels like a labyrinth. You must ALSO see her vid Tragedy (BTVS), which is just -- words fail. Bee Gees + Spike = AWESOME. lie in wait

[livejournal.com profile] sockkpuppett's Vogue (300) -- A fabulous fuck-you to Frank Miller. ♥ now posted!

[livejournal.com profile] destina's Want (SPN) -- Blew me the hell away. Also, I love whoever suggested the meta interpretation (that it could be from *fandom's* POV). ETA: now posted!
(Those "lie in wait" links will take you to the subscription center where you can thumbtack the vidders' ljs for email notification when they get back from the con and post!)

And here's my own premiere vid:

[livejournal.com profile] killabeez gave me this song and said "Twin Peaks!" I think, uh, four Vividcons ago? Since then I have been waiting and waiting for season two to come out on DVD, and finally the gods of dvd releases have smiled upon me. (Witchblade next? please?)

I also remastered my Stargate SG-1 vid Solsbury Hill (the parts that used footage from late season 5 of SG-1), so it is now using all shiny dvd source.

(Unfortunately, imeem's audio fingerprinting system is taking down Solsbury Hill, I think because the audio isn't edited -- so it's not up there at present. I'll see if there's some way to get it to go up.) Never mind, it seems to have gone up on a second try with nothing changed. *perplexed*

Also, hopefully shortly [livejournal.com profile] sisabet will post THE GLORIOUS VID SHE DID FOR ME FOR ME ALL FOR ME which is just endlessly happy-making, and then I will link you all to it and you can be happy. ♥

* It will be a very small, very hard to see pony. Also, I make no promises about delivery times.

[livejournal.com profile] muskratjamboree was just pure stress-free fun. I pretty much spent the entire time toting around the laptop trying to get writing in at every possible opportunity thanks to deadline panic, but writing in a giant crowd of fangirls is awesome. And I even squeezed in a few panels and, you know, occasionally talked to people. Out loud!

Here is the new vid that premiered there. When life calms down, detailed technical how-to for the thing (you'll know the thing when you see it) will be forthcoming.

Uh, hi! Been in this general neck of the woods for 12 years now and know and love a lot of you. Also, as I said to [livejournal.com profile] ficbyzee (who is clearly [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn's sockpuppet btw), I don't think I could fake my death unless C. and I actually staged a fiery car crash and ran to switzerland under false identities.

In other news: [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro has posted a really encouraging report from a conference she's attending about vidding (ETA: which she has to keep flocked for now by request of the conference organizer, but which she's given me the okay to quote from), the part of which made me happiest being:

The other big theme so far is that everyone thinks we're crazy to be so afraid. They think the world is changing. They think we have little to fear. Okay, they may concede a bit of reality-based fear of the RIAA, but in general, they are all out and proud, and they think what we are doing is cool, and they think we should be out and proud, too...

So to recap: We are different! We are a rare community of women, steeped in a rich tradition! And we should be fearless!

And you know, I've really been feeling this more and more myself, when I compare what we do with what all these other people are out there doing.

Which brings me over to imeem. I have really fallen in love with youtube and streaming video lately -- I love being able to just sit there and watch without downloading. And then [livejournal.com profile] aj2k recently posted in [livejournal.com profile] vidding about a service called imeem.com which is basically youtube with better quality video (and the video stays in sync, even if it does stutter now and again).

Anyway -- I've been sold. I've gone ahead and put all my vids on there:

http://astolat.imeem.com/

and I hope to encourage more of you vidders out there to do the same. I'd love it if we used imeem as our own AMV.org -- I mean, even if we still will want to provide high-quality downloadable versions of the vids, this could be a perfect central clearinghouse and a network for us to connect through.

I'm not entirely throwing caution to the winds, in that I've been careful to name my files in ways that a fan can look at them and figure out the fandom/song, but someone doing a random search for either source wouldn't find it. But I do think that in many ways we've been protecting ourselves out of a seat at the table, and it's time to sit down next to the guys making WoW and Halo vids to exactly the same kinds of songs we're using.
astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)
Dittoing [livejournal.com profile] killabeez on this -- if you see my vids on youtube, please don't ask for them to be taken down. I don't love it, but I don't care much, either, and I really do think once I've put it out there online, it's kind of a waste of time to try and close the door. I'd just as soon not have my own bandwidth take the hit.

I also don't care in the slightest about clip theft (if someone makes good vids using my clips as source, great; if they make bad ones, whatever), though I would think it was pretty lame if someone ever used substantial unedited portions without giving credit. If you are inspired by my stories/vids to write, to vid, to make art, yay. If you're nice enough to let me know, that would be cool.

Speaking of which, Cylin has made a beautiful piece of art for The Dark Side, a design of the Atlantis, Sith!John's ship! eeee! So pretty!

Also, hey -- I just realized, I don't think I ever mentioned [livejournal.com profile] ravurian's manips and cover for the same story -- Rodney's Jedi hair cracks me up omg. Also I am waiting for the episode where John is actually dressed like that, because it really must come somewhere during the run of SGA, right?

You know, seriously, forget all the complaints about plot and characterization -- the REAL problem with SGA is inadequate levels of adequately tight black leather pants. *pokes the writers like Rodney poking John in the head*

with thanks to [livejournal.com profile] tzikeh for the song suggestion

Summary: Wikipedia says, "One critic has described Bukowski's fiction as a 'detailed depiction of a certain taboo male fantasy: the uninhibited bachelor, slobby, anti-social, and utterly free.' "

His gravestone says, "Don't Try."

As I was saying all weekend, this was my first Vividcon ever! And hey! This is a great con! *g* I had a ridiculously good and relaxed time, and now I am home and my eyes are blurry from watching vids (and SGA, which made me utterly and uncritically happy with all the cute) and I am wiped out.

Also, the vid-of-my-con is already up, [livejournal.com profile] barkley and [livejournal.com profile] destina's Wiseguy vid to Take Me Out for Club Vivid, which will now join [livejournal.com profile] killabeez and Merricat's vid ETA: [livejournal.com profile] merricatk! to Only The Good Die Young (note, if you don't have the password, e-mail [livejournal.com profile] killabeez at livejournal to request it) in permanent rotation. I needed another fandom right now like a hole in the head, so, THANKS A LOT GUYS. :P *glares at [livejournal.com profile] destina in particular, who does this to me all the goddamn time*

And you should also download [livejournal.com profile] barkley and [livejournal.com profile] thepouncer's SGA/Airwolf vid to, uh, Separate Ways. No, seriously. Trust me. It is John's INNER HEART LAID BARE.
astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)
I've finally gotten off my rear and put up XviD versions of all my older vids that were only available in low-quality formats, as well as reorganized the vidding page a little bit to break it up and put the older vids on a second page.

Also, I realized that there were three vids from Vividcon 2002 that I'd never actually put online, now available --

Solsbury Hill
Stargate SG-1, Daniel (spoilers through season 5)
You can keep my things, they've come to take me home.

[livejournal.com profile] hafital's and my vid!
Hunter
Forever Knight, Janette
Would you be wise enough to let me go?

Man of Constant Sorrow
Indiana Jones
It's always snakes. Or rats. Or Nazis. Or...

All three are on the second page of vids, along with XviD versions of Uninvited, Mundian To Bach Ke, touch me fall, Shed Your Skin, Behind Blue Eyes, and the Highlander vids Blew 'em Away, Free Man in Paris, Passion, and The Space Between.

Go to the vidding site.

Whew. I love VirtualDub batch jobs. ♥ Although now I have looked at all these vids again and they make me very sad because I want to remaster them all with pretty source... :/

The thought about Irresistible -- something that I mentioned in chat to a couple of folks, spoilers for SGA 3x03 )
astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)
Okay, so -- yes, this song has been done I think at least three times already in this fandom, I know. *groans* I fell in love with the idea of this vid a long while back, before the others came out; to me it is just so perfectly what [livejournal.com profile] merryish said about SGA -- OMG my slacker ex-boyfriend and that dork from the debate club are supposed to save the world?? We are SO DOOMED!!! -- and all about Rodney and John in all their slackery glory, and the urge to make it has held on and held on over several months, despite my personal feh about over-vidded songs, so -- there you have it. I have resolutely avoided seeing any of the other vids, so any similarities are coincidental.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza for beta, and to all the hapless victims lovely people in chat I harassed for audiencing and suggestions. ♥

Drive-by SGA vid recs --

[livejournal.com profile] just_eunice has just put out a fucking *spectacular* John vid. Go watch, now now now. The "I felt so good" sequence, the whole thing, just fills me with endless love for John. Non-stop energy -- this song choice is spectacular, and she does everything right with it.

Running Down A Dream by [livejournal.com profile] just_eunice

And this one I have been meaning to post for a bit -- [livejournal.com profile] barkley has put out a vid that I feel truly encapsulates the essence of the dramatic power and scope of the show, the profound relationships between the characters and the intensity of the story universe. With roller skating and Olivia Newton John.

Xanadu by [livejournal.com profile] barkley

And while I'm posting, I will sneak in thanks for the fb for my silly silly story Under The Sea, which made me ridiculously happy, and also big thanks to everyone who gave me comments on the website; I think I've got it settled now; I had to give up max-width, but I set the margins to a high enough percentage that I think it'll stay within reasonable limits on most browser widths, while still allowing most people to widen/narrow the width of the text. Plus I made my banner a little larger so hopefully it looks pretty for more people. *g*
