Ultimate Fanfic Tropes Showdown 3.1

I feel like my final list is not actually true because I change my mind on what each trope means depending on context, which in this case was the trope it was matched up against!

Rank Name
1 Snowed-In Cabin/Isolated Together For Extended Period of Time
2 Enemies to Friends to Lovers
3 Magical Connection (Telepathy, etc)
4 Fake Dating/Fake Marriage Accidentally Turns Into Feelings
5 Fairy Tale/Mythology AU
rest of results )

but the real list is more like:

1) Competence (how! how can they not have included competence!)
2) Fealty (their linked definition of Loyalty Kink is REALLY not the same as mine)
3) Antagonist/counterpart romance
4) Bonding (really any imposed connection) develops into chosen connection
5) AUs that create interesting new stakes and worldbuilding

10) Isolated together
11) Huddling for warmth
12) Family/kid fic
13) Hurt/comfort

the others are in here in a vague cloud, happy to read them, wouldn't immediately jump

100) Artificial conflict/misunderstandings
1000) Unhappy endings
1,000,000) Mundane AUs

But the REAL real answer is that it totally depends on the fandom! What I want is different depending on the fandom and the pairing. But OKAY fine, that is much less interesting for quiz purposes, I GRANT YOU.

[personal profile] arduinna posted: federated fandom

So then I clicked a link in cesperanza's comments and signed up for what seems to be the current fannish-testing-ground on Hubzilla, fandom.stopthatimp.net.

... Seriously, I had NO INTENTION. But here I've been for the last few days, and I gotta say, I'm pulling for Hubzilla to be the next big thing. I'll leave the technical stuff to other people, and just tell you why I'm liking the system as a user.

Lots more details in arduinna's post and I am lazy so I will only point over there and say I'm there too!

I am noodling a super basic little bookmarklet to make it easier to signal-boost posts, and here is a post I wanted to share that I have used it on! :)

[personal profile] tozka posted: thinking about comms

I have some more thoughts re: communities. Specifically, there were a lot of comments wishing they were more active, but not sure a) how to get them to be active, b) what purpose a community serves in modern fannish times, and c) not sure how to run/start a community successfully. And that led to this collection of thoughts about communities!
astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)
Signal-boosting among the holiday frenzy:

[community profile] chocolateboxcomm is currently running nominations! This is a pairings-based exchange (gen & shippy both) and you can request crossover pairings.

[community profile] pornday just ran a fest and there are works up, also I am feeling the spirit of this comm under the circumstances. :P

[community profile] purimgifts is gearing up for their annual exchange of works featuring characters who are any of women, jewish, and/or persecuted by evil viziers. \o/

Just a handful I've seen people needing and one I had forgotten myself:

Here's how you get things like [archiveofourown.org profile] astolat:
<user name=astolat site=archiveofourown.org>

Here's how you do a read more:
<cut text="read more">

Hover your cursor over the little "person" icon next to their name (like in this: [personal profile] astolat) and a little menu will appear with "subscribe" and "grant access" and you can click it and it will add the person without having to load a separate page or click twice.

[personal profile] tenlittlebullets's post reminded me: if you are surfing a prompt meme where people leave prompts in comments, then if it is a paid account (you can gift paid time to a community if it isn't) you can search the comments using search (the search link will be on the community profile):

https://www.dreamwidth.org/search?user=tfanonkink

(If you buy paid time for a big community it will take a little bit before the whole community gets searchable, but then eg you can search for your favorite pairing or character or kink only.)
astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)
Who are you on here & there? Tell me in comments please! I only just belatedly turned on the notification for new followers, so I have no idea who has just turned up and I don't know how to find everyone in my tumblrish fandoms. *peers around in fog*

Also let me know if you know any active comms for Transformers, Witcher, GoT, HP, or, uh, anything else I'm forgetting. Oh, Dragon Age! I've been replaying DAO lately and having a blast with the Alister Revised Romance mod (and also the absolutely necessary Skip The Deep Roads mod omg, so glad for that).

More Joy Day will be January 17! :D If you aren't familiar with the idea, go check out [personal profile] sdwolfpup's post, this is another DW tradition I have been missing, yay. <3

I am doing Snowflake completely out of order, but hey!

Day 2

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

First, a post: [personal profile] cesperanza linked recently to this evergreen post of hers from 2006 about the NEXT story, which you should totally read if you are ever feeling inhibited or discouraged about writing.

everything, even ourselves (11080 words) by ohdeariemegoodness
TF:G1, Ultra Magnus & Optimus Prime, Soundwave/Ultra Magnus, Ultra Magnus/Bureaucracy (lol)

my rec: this is just hilarious and great, and poor Ultra Magnus is clearly in for a confusing and difficult time. (Also I totally see pre-Megatron/Optimus in this story. ;) Also read her other TF stories, they are super fun; where we had thought to find is actually an AU of And I Alone Have Escaped To Tell You. :D

The Field Ballad (1809 words) by AltraViolet
TF: IDW G1, Megatron/Rodimus

my rec: okay so tbh I am not into IDW's Autobot Megatron at all, or the entire Lost Light concept at all for that matter, but this story is great! I love the whole concept of the field ballad and even if Autobot Megatron is not Megatron, he is an interesting character and I love Rodimus and their interaction in this too.

and a bonus, my own awesome gift from the Secret Solenoid exchange:

Wiser Eyes (4712 words) by Harutemu
Transformers: Prime, Megatron/Optimus Prime

my rec: OK so I have to preface this by saying that I have massive problems with the TF:Prime backstory (which is either completely out of control of its own politics or deliberately ultra-right-wing or BOTH), so essentially what I am always looking for in a TFP story is anything that fixes that, and this story did just that! \o/

So a few people have asked me about Vividcon ending, and I thought I would just say briefly: first, I understand and support the concom's decision. I also understand why people are sad. For many of us who are FIAWOL, fannish events often form a core part of the structure of our lives and shape our annual calendars and provide the framework for seeing people who are as important to us as our families if not more so. I completely get the unhappiness of losing one of those events and am sorry myself.

That said, I feel like, we started Vividcon in and designed it for an era of vid scarcity.

lots more thoughts )

So I am sad to see it go, but I feel like it had a great run and served the purpose it was designed for, and it's ultimately AWESOME that we no longer NEED it -- that today we can see SO MANY vids so easily. And I am looking forward to seeing you guys at the next awesome thing to keep the conversation about vids and fandom going. ♥

Reader, I am really fucking tired. *insert long tedious explanation of the past week involving hospital, fainting, copious vomiting (different days, different family members), family visit, 3 playdates, and ending with my current location in hotel room in Disneyworld*

Everyone is okay now but OMG.

HOWEVER I am actually here to share this vidding zine what lim made, which I was so thrilled to participate in:

Videlicet

I think it is really quite awesome and full of interesting and joyful and fannish thought in the very best way. My own contribution was to rave on about [personal profile] sisabet's vid Bad Romance, which spoiler alert is one of my most favorite vids and if you want to know why GO LOOK AT THE SHINY.

So alas, Livejournal has now blocked Dreamwidth from importing or crossposting, and since I don't want to deal with manual crossposting, I will be freezing this account and not updating it any longer. Please let me know your Dreamwidth names if you are over there!

I'm astolat over there too:

http://astolat.dreamwidth.org

and also on the AO3 if you want to just subscribe for new fic & vid notifications:

Hey so I just have seen that a thing people seem to be doing on imzy is making self-named comms to post their stuff in? So here is mine:

https://www.imzy.com/astolat

It doesn't quite make sense to me yet, I haven't actually USED it for anything other than posting one test notification (for a new little Dragon Age story I posted on AO3 which I have been too lazy to post anywhere else yet), but I am there! Also I got a heap of invites as a result of creating a comm, so if you want one, just go here:

https://www.imzy.com/astolat/request-invite Hey guys I'm out of invites under astolat, but still have them here:

https://imzy.com/hpfanworks/request-invite

(I will not be at all upset if you leave the comm after you get the account approved!)

and put in your email and I'll approve asap.

Just to mention that I am moving any of my subscriptions that I can over to Dreamwidth from LJ, so if you see me unfriending on LJ that's why! (This newfangled being able to reply right from the reading page is a killer feature for me!)

Day 03

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Hmm, [personal profile] cesperanza already posted Anything For Love. I have a sampler series on the AO3 with a dozen or so stories that I think are a good introduction to my work and are a bunch of my favorites.

So here are three fairly random choices:

This one because I'm in a Star Wars place and figure some of you may be as well!

The Dark Side (7497 words) by astolat
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis, Star Wars - All Media Types
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard
Additional Tags: Originally Posted on LiveJournal

"Oh, excuse me, I am an excellent Jedi," Rodney said.

This one because I always think more about smaller fandoms around Yuletide, and also I remain very proud of this story because getting the Wodehouse voice kicked my ass around the block (I am especially proud of the proposal):

Jeeves and the Blessed Indiscretion (4213 words) by astolat
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Jeeves & Wooster
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Reginald Jeeves/Bertram Wooster
Characters: Bertram Wooster, Reginald Jeeves
Additional Tags: Yuletide, challenge:Yuletide 2004
Summary:

The morning unfairly showed no early warning signs of disaster. The sun was simply pouring enthusiastically into the room, rather overdoing it in my opinion. The consequences of an evening sprung off by Foggy Moreland are not lightly shrugged away, he said with a hollow laugh.

And this one because getting my Star Wars love back reminds me that I miss Star Trek, my Star Trek, which really did boldly go to places no one had gone before:

Past Duties (2353 words) by astolat
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Jean-Luc Picard/Q
Characters: Jean-Luc Picard, Q (Star Trek)
Summary:

Late in life, Picard has an uninvited guest.

Day 1: Why are you doing the snowflake challenge?

Because lo, I am a sheep, and all that gamboling the other sheep are doing looks like fun!

Day 2: Fannish wish list

1) Prompts!

I love prompts and the problem is that I start one in fifty and finish maybe one in a hundred so I always feel guilty for asking for them, but if you have a prompt for one of my fandoms/characters/pairings and you don't mind those odds then I would love them!

Currently moving me: Harry/Draco, Hermione/Draco, Luke Skywalker, Solas/Lavellan, but anything goes prompt-wise!

(NB: I am happy to write prompts you would also like to write yourself or would also like to post elsewhere, nonexclusive terms here ;)

2) Winter recipes!

Would especially love any recipes that are set-and-forget where you can get it in the oven or on the stove and then walk away while it cooks. Also ones that can be done within an hour so I can make it for dinner on a weeknight.

(My own favorite roast chicken recipe is the Keller one where you just dry it, salt and pepper and roast 50 min in a 450 degree oven, no other prep or anything.)

3) Fanart!

I really have gotten an embarrassment of riches in terms of fanart for my work so this is greedy, but I would always love more!

I will catch up with Day 3 and 4 tomorrow. :)

Sad news

You may have seen this elsewhere, but Taselby, whom many of you may remember from Highlander fandom and from vidding and Escapade, has just lost her sixteen year old daughter Parker to a pulmonary embolism. God, I can't even imagine what she's going through. To make matters worse, they racked up huge medical bills because Parker was hospitalized twice this year trying to figure the problem out, and now they don't even have enough for funeral expenses.

The gofundme fundraiser is here. Please signal boost if you can. I am so sad for them--Tiff worked so damn hard to get her degree and a stable teaching job, finally got tenure recently after years of struggling, and she is one of those people who, you walk into a room with her, she makes it brighter. I remember meeting her at Escapade one of the first years I went, still a fandom newbie and before I had even started vidding, and her kindness and warmth. I don't even have words. It's so fucking unfair and horrible.
astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)
...okay so maybe that wasn't the greatest idea I have ever had. But I committed and then it was TOO LATE.

Astolat Vids

Voila, a series of 31 of my vids in roughly chronological order, with some margin of error because I can't remember what year it is right now half the time much less what year I premiered a vid in. It's also missing a tiny handful of old vids because I haven't put them on youtube yet.

*falls over*

It's really wild to see even just in my own work how rapidly vidding aesthetics and video quality has changed. Ugh, I still remember trying to make vids in the bad old days with the whatsit Dazzle thingy that imported from a VCR: you had to plug in the VCR and actually play the video tape on an attached little TV to see where it was, and hope you got a usable clip and it was just nightmarish. It's amazing there are as many clips as there even are in some of those early vids :P but they feel SO SLOW now. I keep mentally going and... CUT! Cut now? How about now?
astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)

  • Wig, push-up bra (what even are these monstrosities seriously), pink dress acquired

  • Premieres vid uploaded, AO3 draft created

  • Old badge holder dug up

  • Camaro rented (WHAT, I'm embracing my fandom)

I have also gotten ambitious and am going to upload a whole slew of my back catalogue vids to AO3 today, so apologies in advance if you get a bunch of subscription notifications!
astolat: lady of shalott weaving in black and white (Default)
Wot I wrote, the full list: 20 stories (124K words), 3 vids, in Sherlock, POI, Captain America/MCU, Dragon Age, and Rome )

And then there was also Blood of Tyrants, which was 150K words and kicked my ass. Yes, I fell into the classic blunder and got involved in a land war in Asia. *hangs head*

Looking it over, it's interesting (and sad) to see how thoroughly Carter's death killed POI for me. I was writing like a fiend in that fandom, and then boom. I kept watching through to the end of that season, but all the words just went away. There have been things like that for me before -- with Supernatural, Sam not saving Dean in S4 killed the show for me too. I wonder what it is -- I don't even really care about canon very much and I don't have a lot of confidence in television consistency given all the massive constraints on the medium, but a feeling of, they have fundamentally broken the show for me?

Anyway, I haven't posted anything in a bit because Dragon Age, and also I am laboring away on Temeraire #9 and promo for Uprooted, and also two separate DA:I stories that are insisting on turning huge, but hopefully I'll knock one of those off soon. I am almost done with my Dorian-romancing, dragon-slaying rogue archer Trevelyan playthrough. It's been fun, but I've had a tough time with the RP. I wanted him to be a sincere Andrastian but with a sense of humor, and it turns out, that's kind of hard! A lot of the "believer" choices feel inconsistent with the cracking-a-joke choices, and tbh, I really don't like the "noble" male voice at all.

OK and now I am off to play Minecraft with my little one for a bit -- our new game! I hope it does not eat me like DA, haha.
