soc_puppet: Words "Baseless Opinion" in orange (Baseless Opinion)

Finished reading the first volume of Scum Villain! It's, hmm.

Okay, either the author really loaded up a bunch of info in the short story volume and/or like. Interviews and stuff, or fandom is doing a lot of heavy lifting with the disciple years, because it is sparse on stuff happening. Or, well, it has like. Four plot points/events, and then it jumps to the Immortal Alliance Conference?

I'm gonna be honest, I'll be fine with either outcome, I'm just stuck on whether to skip to the short story volume to find out how much is built in there. (I happened to find a hard copy at Half Price Books last weekend, so I'd even have something of an excuse...) I might be SOL for finding any Word Of God deuterocanon, since damned if I go tag surfing on Tumblr, and that's probably where most of it's going to be, but I can at least get the answers to some of my questions if I skip ahead! And it's not like I'm not wildly spoiled already...

Anyway, the point isn't me dithering over whether to skip ahead or not, it's me griping over not knowing whether stuff is fanon or canon right now, and the first volume of the series plus the existence of the short story volume not being as helpful as it could have been in clearing that up.

That's always an awkward place to be in, where you've started the canon but not finished it so everything you see in fic/discussion has that sort of 'is this canonical or are we speculating' uncertainty to it.

With SVSSS I really think reading it without skipping anything is the best option, because part of the fun is in watching how much the protagonist misses because of his welded-on This Is How Canon Goes goggles. :D

I read it all really fast earlier this year (my library has all the volumes!!) and if I remember correctly, there are a lot of flashbacks, so you learn a lot about the apprentice years and other backstory in the middle of other action.

I also remember that all four volumes have appendices with character profiles and pronunciation guides. And I *think* the character guides are updated in each volume to match the part of the story in that volume, so they aren’t (very?) spoilery. I wish I could remember whether they have spoilers at all, but I tended to look at them midway through the volume so it didn’t matter as much.
