Longlegs has a lot of good. Osgood Perkins definitely has a style; an aesthetic. The brooding ambiance and constant sense of dread made for something within the story that you can't necessarily turn your eyes away from.
Perkins also seems to get good performances from his actors. Maika Monroe and Nic Cage shine for opposing reasons. Cage letting his scary side loose is bound to attract our eyes. Monroe, on the other hand, gives a strong performance with stoic expressions and eye acting that effortlessly conveys fear, terror, and dread. I thought she was wonderful.
I would say that this film's vices lie in a good number of things. It took a good while to get going. I'm not opposed to slow burns, but this one frequently felt sluggish. Also, I think it relied a bit too much on jump scares, which certainly helped the slow pacing. However, the brooding tension needed more of a terror factor (in my view, because I've read that others felt it).
That said, the third act brought it home. It certainly put me on the edge. Now that, extended through the whole film, would be something. Perkins has undeniable talent and I'm sure some fine-tuning in that aspect will make for some terrific films from him in the future.
