Perfectly fine is what this is. Oz Perkins tells a creepy crime/supernatural slow-burn story with restraint and indie spirit. Most of the praise should be placed on the twisty nature of the story, while the supposed selling points fell a little short for me. The fact that Longlegs differs from its contemporaries with its muted delivery is already a win for itself. No wonder Perkins claimed never to watch today's mainstream horrors, and it shows.
With Longlegs, Perkins stays consistent with his indie horror phase, building up the atmosphere while opting for more subtle and sporadic scores. The result is a retro horror experience that creeps from beneath the surface. The slowness may have dragged down the narrative at times, but everything culminates in a jaw-dropping reveal that makes up for all the patient waiting.
When it comes to the elephant in the room, Nicolas Cage actually disappointed me a bit with his caricaturistic performance, along with Maika Monroe, whose acting also fell short during the more pivotal scenes. Overall, though, the greatness outweighs the weaknesses with this one.
