Going in almost completely blind to this, I really wasn't sure what to expect; but it definitely wasn't this. Feel it was the right choice, since for the most part I was pleasantly surprised by this.
Firstly the visuals are amazing. Gorgeous lighting creates a mysterious and moody atmosphere, with vibrant red titles and a really unique changing aspect ratio. Production wise this was really well done, easy to take in and nice to look at.
Performance wise too; Maika Monroe carries the film and is quickly becoming one of my favourite horror/thriller actresses. Her constant pained expression immediately alerting us that something is not right; unbeknownst to us.
My only complaint really is that some aspects of the story didn't really make sense and weren't needed. If we have the dolls, do we also need the link to her mother and a mild psychic element? Especially when most of this isn't really explained fully.
Whilst Nic Cage is fun, his villain has no real menace and we laughed whenever we saw him. Maybe this is intentional but it meant the payoff for any tension was a laugh not a scare.
Overall a fun horror thriller, that whilst not remotely scary is really gorgeous to look at and undoubtedly contains a lot of hidden details you'd spot on a rewatch.
A good film with a few flaws that prevent it from being great.
