"Have you been saying your prayers?"
Look... I'm an absolute sluttttttt for a good slow burning, psychological, occult centric, crime thriller man...
With that in mind, I can confirm Osgood Perkins has now crafted two of my all-time favorite horror films. The attention to detail, casting, and overall atmosphere/style of his films just resonate with me deeply. His latest 'Longlegs' is no exception. In fact... I think it's his best work to date. 'Longlegs' kept me throughly engaged throughout with it's exceptional sound design, visuals, subdued, yet still well composed and effective score, mystery, and just the absolutely stellar performances from across the board. I honestly don't think I sat completely back in my seat once during my viewing.
Now to say the marketing of this film was insane would be nothing short of an understatement... naturally with that comes A LOT of hype, so I completely understand why some were somewhat let down in the end, or just expecting a slightly different beast going in. Think elements of both David Fincher's Zodiac and Se7en, as well as Jonathan Demme's The Silence of the Lambs, with heavy helter skelter esque occult themes meets old farm house religion framed in rural 1990s America. The horror within isn't constantly in your face, but when it is, trust me it is more than effective enough. What really shines and separates the experience from others here however, is the sheer level of intrigue, looming darkness, and creeping dread throughout 'Longlegs' that is truly a beautifully unsettlingly ominous thing to behold. Not to mention the occasional comedic beats, both light, and dark were some of the most well placed in a horror feature I've seen in quite some time.
All in all I left the cinema extremely satisfied tonight and feeling somewhat hexed in the end. Like a curse slowly found it's way deep inside me during that 1 hour and 41 minute runtime. Leaving me feeling perplexed, yet completely refined all the same. Personally, I can not wait to own this one physically and potentially go see it again sooner, rather than later with a different group of mutuals who have yet to experience it. Considering there was plenty of symbolism and creepily subtle background imagery throughout the film, I'm certain there is more to see/uncover here. So, without diving into spoiler territory, I guess all thats really left for me to say is,
hail Satan! *kisses*
