Agrona makes his initial appearance in the form of Sylvie, possesing her body once the seal placed on her was broken. He offers a safe place for Arthur and his loved ones if he agrees to withdraw from the war.[1] Agrona once again possess Sylvie after the Bloodfrost Battle at Etistin where Dicathen suffers a disastrous loss. Arthur inquires about the deal he previously offered, but Agrona says it is no longer relevant.[2]

When he discovers that Arthur has survived his encounter with Cadell and Nico in Telmore, he disregards him as a threat, however this backfires on him mutliple times as he failed to capture Arthur thrice. First during the Victoriad[3], second in Vildorial by the Wraiths[4] and third when Arthur (along with Chul and Sylvie) escaped from Cecilia after a battle in Nirmala.[5]

Later on after realising that Arthur is out of comission because the fourth keystone, he launches the second invasion of Dicathen, but this time the Lances were prepared to fight the Scythes and Arthur took a huge gamble to hide his location.[6] When Agrona learns of this, he decides to take the matter into his own hands.[7] With the help of Ji-ae, he goes to Sylvia's cave with Cecilia and Nico, and finds Arthur, Regis and Sylvie. Cecilia is ordered by Agrona to kill Sylvie, but she can not bring herself to kill the defenseless child. In retaliation, Agrona fatally injuries Nico and dominates Cecilia[8] until Arthur, Regis and Sylvie finally wake up, armed with the power of Fate. Agrona is defeated and rendered incapacitated when Arthur cuts the threads of Fate that ties Agrona and Cecilia, removing the power of the Legacy from the world. After Agrona's defeat at the hands of Arthur, Kezess appears with Myre, Windsom and Charon, capturing Agrona and bringing him to Epheotus, seemingly ending the long war.[9]

Appearance[]

Agrona is a tall, handsome man with pale, smooth skin and a sharp jaw. He has vibrantly scarlet eyes and massive black, shiny horns sprouting from the sides of his black hair like an elk's antlers, each coming to a spear-sharp point. His horns have several gold and silver rings wrapped around the many prongs, and they are bejeweled with delicate chains.[10]

Personality[]

Agrona has a considerable fascination over the lives of the lesser beings, especially the ancient mages who learned to harness aether. Sylvia once described him as a "coy and charming knowledge-seeker." After being exiled when he threatened to expose the Indrath Clan for the genocide they had commited against the ancient mages, Agrona was driven mad by the betrayal of his clansmen and his love, causing him to become cruel and commit despicable actions that once were against his ethics. Despite his madness, he has a casual and pleasant demeanour to both allies and enemies alike since Arthur describes him as eccentric and sociable. He acknowledges someone's strength and people who have an immense potiential even if they are lesser beings and does not look down on them.

Nevertheless, he enjoys torturing his enemies as shown when he insulted Arthur on his emotional weakness.[3] He has no tolerance or patience for those who fail him even if it’s a partial failure though he can still give a second chance. When someone impresses him he will acknwoledge them as he complemented Arthur's gambit to hide himself during unlocking the fourth keystone. He sees emotions as a weakness that will hinder true progress.

He can also be described as cunning and manipulative, since he managed to manipulate Alduin Eralith and Dawsid Greysunders into betraying their countries and he was able to outmaneuver Kezess Indrath for centuries due to Kezess's short-sightedness and his own long term plans. Nevertheless, he is not above making mistakes since he did not regard Arthur as a threat when he discovered his survival in Alacrya, which led to the death of Cadell and a Squad of his Wraiths. Furthermore, due to the before-mentioned hubris, he also lost his control over Dicathen while he also failed to capture Arthur thrice. Later, this mistake led to his defeat as Arthur seperates the Legacy from Cecilia and him using the power of the aspect of Fate.

Agrona is the leader of the Vritra Clan and Sylvia's intended husband. Centuries ago, Agrona used to wear a disguise and sneak off to Dicathen and Alacrya for research purposes, captivated by the lessers' way of life. During one of his visits, he discovered the Relictombs of the ancient mages, who had learned how to wield aether. Agrona also unearthed the Indrath Clan's biggest secret, the genocide of the ancient mages. Agrona threatened to expose the Indrath Clan of their wrongdoings, but they exiled him to Alacrya under the pretense of having an intimate relationship with the lessers. During his exile, Agrona and his followers searched for the ancient mages' buried texts, hoping to build upon their knowledge. He resorted to using the lessers as experimental subjects to investigate the existence of an edict called "Fate." Agrona reunited with Sylvia, who warned him of her father's plan to assassinate him and also notified him of the existence of their unborn child she was carrying. Upon learning of Sylvia's pregnancy with a child of basilisk and dragon lineage, Agrona imprisoned Sylvia until she gave birth to Sylvie. Sylvia later escaped, taking Sylvie with her. Agrona sent Cadell to capture her.[11] Later it is revealed he discovered a Djinn remnant called Ji-ae during the early days of his exile. She has helped him in his plans regarding the advancement of mana arts[7], though unknown to him, Ji-Ae helped Sylvia escape and gave her the map of the Relictombs and also informed her about Arthur.[12]

Through his experiments and by sending Vritra Blooded Alacryans to the Relictombs, he discovered the runes used by the ancient mages. Using those as a scaffold, he created magical runes that where given to all the capable people in Alacrya through the bestowal ceremony. Moreover, he also discovered an edict called Fate, the core component of reincarnation[11] as he is responsible for the reincarnation of Grey, Cecilia and Nico to bring the power of an entity called the Legacy to destroy Kezess and the oppossing asuran factions.[Citation needed]

Abilities & Skills[]

As a member of the basilisk race, Agrona can utilize decay-type mana art.

  • Body Possession - Due to imbedding a spell onto Sylvie when she was still an egg, Agrona has the ability to possess Sylvie's body, though he is limited to only being able to move around and communicate with others and can't use any mana arts. However, after Sylvie’s resurrection, this ability should have disappeared.
  • Memory Manipulation - Agrona has the ability to manipulate the memories of others upon physical contact as shown when he touched Cecilia, causing her to see altered versions of her memories while also suppressing Tessia's will/memories.
  • Transformation - He can transform into a basilisk or in other words into a large snake like form with large leathery wings, though his transformed state has yet to be shown in the novel.

Quotes[]

  • (To Arthur) “Do you shed tears for the ants that you step on?[13]
  • (To Arthur) “Ooh, is this the part where the villain falls into a monologue and reveals his nefarious plans to the righteous hero?[13]
  • (To Arthur) “I suppose it does no harm in telling you. Let’s say I’ve enjoyed talking with an old friend of yours, King Grey.[13]
  • (To Arthur) "Was this all done just for me? I'm flattered, Grey. For a lesser, your over-inflated sense of self-importance is astounding. But you seem to have tried very hard to get my attention. And, well, now you have it."[3]
  • (To Cecilia) "Yesterday's defeat becomes the lesson that informs tomorrow's victory."
  • (To Nico) "Don't worry yourself about it, little Nico. It isn't your fault. After all, Arthur is just... so very much smarter than you."[8]
