2014
McGeehan's campaign website highlighted the following campaign themes:[13]
- Bailouts
- Excerpt: "I strongly oppose all government bailouts of private industry. Federal bailouts reward inefficient and corrupt management, while robbing taxpayers and increasing the National Debt."
- Coal
- Excerpt: "The Environmental Protection Agency must go. As Obama and his administration are ramping up their War on Coal, good paying coal mining jobs are being destroyed in our own backyards. Politicians claim they want to “rein in” the EPA, yet West Virginia keeps losing jobs and the revenue that goes with them. The only way to win the War on Coal is to target the source: The EPA must be defunded, and abolished."
- Healthcare
- Excerpt: "Small businesses are suffering and on the verge of being closed due to the new polices of our current President. West Virginians deserve representation in Washington that won’t play party politics to get ahead. If we are to protect small businesses and jobs, we must repeal Obamacare."
- Immigration
- Excerpt: "I oppose any bill which involves amnesty. When we hear of proposed immigration legislation labeled as “reform package,” conservatives always lose."
- National Defense
- Excerpt: "National Defense is the federal government’s primary function and must be taken seriously at all measures. I believe when we fight we must do so under a Declaration of War from Congress, as mandated by the Constitution. Furthermore, when we do send our men and women into harms way, it must be for the defense of our country. Our men and women should not be used as the world’s police."
- Second Amendment
- Excerpt: "Politicians will campaign that they are pro-gun, and then go to Washington and vote to restrict gun ownership. I will never vote for any legislation that infringes on the individual’s right to keep and bear arms. The Second Amendment must be kept sacred and protected at all levels."
- Taxes and Debt
- Excerpt: "No West Virginian will say they believe they are under-taxed. Reducing the burden of taxation allows families to save for their future, and gives more money to working men and women. Lowering taxes also gives businesses the ability to invest in their companies and create more jobs. I believe it is not only bad economics to overly-tax our residents, but that it is immoral for Washington D.C to continually steal the income and property of our residents."
- Sanctity of Life
- Excerpt: "As an Irish-Catholic, I have always believed that life is precious, and that a fundamental role of government is to protect life — all life."
2012
McGeehan's website highlighted the following campaign themes:
Second Amendment
- Excerpt: "I received an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association. During my time in the House of Delegates, I introduced the first Tenth Amendment bill on firearms, referred to as the “West Virginia Firearms Freedom Act”. Utilizing the authority of the Constitution and the ability for the sovereign states to govern themselves, the bill simply stated that if a firearm was manufactured in the state of West Virginia, and kept within our state’s borders, the firearm (and its manufacturer) would not be subject to federal regulation."
Life
- Excerpt: "All life must be preserved and held by society as a cherished gift from our Creator. Rights do not come from the government, and thus, they cannot be taken away by the government. During my time in the House of Delegates, I worked on many bills that protected life. I have found that one way to endorse life is to strip away tax-payer funding from abortion procedures. Taxes must never be used for this purpose and I will never waiver on this firm commitment to a policy of “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."
Economic Growth
- Excerpt: "In the long run, largesse in centralized government tends to destroy production, leads to less savings, increases consumption, causes the business cycle and our economic depressions, and creates conditions whereby no one is served except those special interests in Charleston. Cutting back the scale of permits, licenses, fees, taxes, and burdensome mandates is critical to allowing our economy to flourish."

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
