This state needs to start focusing on what's important. Our education system is becoming a huge disappointment. Our children graduate without any real life skills and are unable to support themselves with anything but a minimum wage job. Here they are at 18 years old and technically an adult but are faced with very limited options. Jobs, what jobs? Right now, if I lose my job I have to move away in order to support my family. As many of you know, I am a surface coal miner. A lot of people look down on coal miners and believe we are uneducated. This is a stigma I'd like to change. I CHOSE coal, and I LOVE my job. People need to realize that college just is not for everyone and we need to bring in more jobs for those people. Even with a college education, jobs are scarce. Medical, education, maybe business... What else is there here? Industrial parks, manufacturing companies, and agriculture are just a few ideas. There are so many opportunities if we could just work together and make it happen. The condition of our communities is heartbreaking. Roads are littered with potholes and garbage. Roads are literally crumbling away. This infuriates me. We pay taxes just for the upkeep of these things. The state will pave a road, and a week later a utility company is tearing it back up. Where is the communication? I'm not bashing either, I'm just saying that there needs to be some cooperation. As for the garbage, why not let the inmates at the regional jail pick up this garbage and serve their community in a positive way? I've seen it done in other places so why not here? Tourism is something that we could expand upon. We already have the Hatfield McCoy trail and a ton of reclaimed strip mines. We could build cabins, put in a small amusement park or carnival, and make some of our historic land marks a bigger attraction. This would bring in revenue and job opportunities. What I'm trying to say is that I want to help, I want to make a difference. I don't want to leave this state if I lose my job, and I don't want to see my friends and family relocate either. I love this state and I want to stay here and raise my children here. This is home; I was born and raised here. I once again urge you to consider me when you vote in the upcoming election on May 10th.[6] |

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
