Maria Callas sings "Casta Diva" (Bellini: Norma, Act 1)
The great Maria Callas performs an aria from her signature role, Bellini's druid priestess Norma, with the Orchestre de l'Opera National de Paris and Georges Sebastian. Maria Callas Live: Bizet's Carmen Habanera, Hamburg 1962
http://www.maria-callas.com
Callas’s only operatic appearances in Germany were Lucia di Lammermoor, with Karajan conducting, in Berlin in 1955, and La sonnambula in Cologne in 1957, but in both 1959 and 1962 she made concert tours of the country, visiting Hamburg twice. The video recordings of her concerts in the city showcase her in a dazzling variety of Italian and French repertoire for both soprano and mezzo-soprano: three contrasting Verdi roles (Lady Macbeth, Elvira from Ernani and Elisabetta from Don Carlo); Imogene from Bellini’s Il pirata; Giulia from La vestale; Chimène from Massenet’s Le Cid; Verdi’s most explosively dramatic aria for mezzo-soprano – Eboli’s ‘On don fatale’ from Don Carlo; Carmen’s seductive Habanera and Seguédille and, from Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Angelina’s f...

Maria Callas sings Puccini: Tosca - 'Vissi d'Arte' at Covent Garden 1964
Maria Callas Live: http://www.maria-callas.com
Maria Callas' final appearance on the operatic stage was in Tosca at Covent Garden's 1965 Royal Gala. For many opera lovers, Maria Callas and Tosca's Vissi d'Arte are inseparable. "I lived for art; I lived for love" became La Divina's cri de coeur, her swansong, the perfect expression of her own triumphs and tragedies. This unrivaled recording is from that legendary Zeffirelli production in 1964 and is one of just many jewels in the Maria Callas Live edition.

Maria By Callas | Official US Trailer HD (2018)
Tom Volf’s MARIA BY CALLAS is the first film to tell the life story of the legendary Greek/American opera singer completely in her own words.
Told through performances, TV interviews, home movies, family photographs, private letters and unpublished memoirs—nearly all of which have never been shown to the public—the film reveals the essence of an extraordinary woman who rose from humble beginnings in New York City to become a glamorous international superstar and one of the greatest artists of all time.
Assembling the material for the film took director Volf four years of painstaking research, which included personal outreach to dozens of Callas’s closest friends and associates, who allowed him to share their personal memorabilia in the film. When recordings of Callas’s voice aren’t ava...

When recordings of Callas’s voice aren’t available, Joyce DiDonato, one of contemporary opera’s biggest stars, reads her words.

Gluck: Orfeo ed Euridice "Che Faro Senza Euridice?" M. Horne
Orfeo has been allowed to bring back his wife from Hades as long as he does not look upon her face until they are back on earth. However, urged by Euridice, he turns around and looks at her and she immediately dies. Grief-stricken, he wonders what he will ever do without his love.
Che farò senza Euridice?
Dove andrò senza il mio ben?
Euridice, o Dio, rispondi!
Io son pure il tuo fedele.
Euridice! Ah, non m´avanza
più soccorso, più speranza
ne dal mondo, ne dal ciel.
Translation
What will I do without Euridice?
Where will I go without my beloved?
Euridice, oh God, answer me!
Yet I still belong to you faithfully.
Euridice! Ah, no help comes to me anymore,
No hope anymore,
Neither from this world, nor from heaven.

Gluck - Orphée et Eurydice (Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, Monteverdi Choir)
From the Théâtre du Châtelet, 2000:
Christoph Willibald Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice starring Magdalena Kozená and others. With English subtitles.
John Eliot Gardiner chose to use Berlioz’s 1859 revision of Orphée, which adapted the tenor role of Gluck’s 1774 score for the contralto voice of Pauline Viardot, adjusting the register for a mezzo-soprano. Underlining his preference for this version, he performed the opera with the nineteenth-century period instruments of his Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique. His regular chorus, the Monteverdi Choir, excelled vocally and dramatically in its elegant contribution to the drama.

Christoph Willibald Gluck occupies an unassailable place in the history of music as one of the great "opera reformers." Here is an opera that can be classified at the same level as those of Mozart by its thematic and melodic richness. We are struck by the long orchestral passages that support and consolidate the dramatic framework. He strove to create a new and till then unknown kind of music-drama, in direct opposition to the two main currents in eighteenth-century music theatre — principally, the pandering to vocal virtuosity in opera seria which was rapidly reaching the stage when the singers' skill was becoming an end in itself, but also the Singspiel movement with its banal plots and folk-like, strophic songs. In contradistinction to these, Gluck considered the real task of the music to be the outlining of the dramatic action. Every sentiment, every emotion, every turn in the plot must be mirrored in the music, must indeed be fully comprehensible only through the music. In the poet Ranieri de' Calzabigi Gluck found a librettist who was to inspire and stimulate him, and whose librettos matched his own ideas perfectly.

When the historic Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris re-opened after a period of extensive refurbishment, the first two productions mounted in the theatre were Gluck’s Alceste and Orphée et Eurydice. “The center of these proceedings was not any singer, producer or politician but Gluck himself. To hear his songful art pour out uninterrupted over consecutive evenings was to understand the overwhelming power of melody. Gluck was not a master of complication, but he made his shortcomings into forceful music” (New York Times). Gluck understood how to put music at the service of poetry.
A key figure in the revival of Early Music, John Eliot Gardiner has long been a champion of Gluck’s French operas and is a great Gluck conductor. He conducted the English Baroque Soloists, the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique and the Monteverdi Choir. His performances with these ensembles – all of which he founded – bear the personal stamp of his scholarship and inspired musicianship and are noted for their zest and technical mastery. Gardiner received enormous critical acclaim for his musical direction of both Orphée and Alceste at the Châtelet, as did his orchestras and chorus.
Television’s top opera director, Brian Large, worked closely with Robert Wilson and John Eliot Gardiner to ensure that the translation of the live performance to the small screen was of the highest artistic and technical standard.
