Maria Callas sings "Casta Diva" (Bellini: Norma, Act 1)
The great Maria Callas performs an aria from her signature role, Bellini's druid priestess Norma, with the Orchestre de l'Opera National de Paris and Georges Sebastian. Maria Callas Live: Bizet's Carmen Habanera, Hamburg 1962
http://www.maria-callas.com
Callas’s only operatic appearances in Germany were Lucia di Lammermoor, with Karajan conducting, in Berlin in 1955, and La sonnambula in Cologne in 1957, but in both 1959 and 1962 she made concert tours of the country, visiting Hamburg twice. The video recordings of her concerts in the city showcase her in a dazzling variety of Italian and French repertoire for both soprano and mezzo-soprano: three contrasting Verdi roles (Lady Macbeth, Elvira from Ernani and Elisabetta from Don Carlo); Imogene from Bellini’s Il pirata; Giulia from La vestale; Chimène from Massenet’s Le Cid; Verdi’s most explosively dramatic aria for mezzo-soprano – Eboli’s ‘On don fatale’ from Don Carlo; Carmen’s seductive Habanera and Seguédille and, from Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Angelina’s f...

Maria Callas sings Puccini: Tosca - 'Vissi d'Arte' at Covent Garden 1964
Maria Callas Live: http://www.maria-callas.com
Maria Callas' final appearance on the operatic stage was in Tosca at Covent Garden's 1965 Royal Gala. For many opera lovers, Maria Callas and Tosca's Vissi d'Arte are inseparable. "I lived for art; I lived for love" became La Divina's cri de coeur, her swansong, the perfect expression of her own triumphs and tragedies. This unrivaled recording is from that legendary Zeffirelli production in 1964 and is one of just many jewels in the Maria Callas Live edition.

Maria By Callas | Official US Trailer HD (2018)
Tom Volf’s MARIA BY CALLAS is the first film to tell the life story of the legendary Greek/American opera singer completely in her own words.
Told through performances, TV interviews, home movies, family photographs, private letters and unpublished memoirs—nearly all of which have never been shown to the public—the film reveals the essence of an extraordinary woman who rose from humble beginnings in New York City to become a glamorous international superstar and one of the greatest artists of all time.
Assembling the material for the film took director Volf four years of painstaking research, which included personal outreach to dozens of Callas’s closest friends and associates, who allowed him to share their personal memorabilia in the film. When recordings of Callas’s voice aren’t ava...

When recordings of Callas’s voice aren’t available, Joyce DiDonato, one of contemporary opera’s biggest stars, reads her words.

Saimir Pirgu, Venera Gimadieva and The Royal Opera Chorus sing La traviata's famous drinking song.
‘A toast to the pleasures of life!’ – so sings Violetta, her new admirer Alfredo and her party guests in the opening scene of Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata. La traviata, based on Alexandre Dumas fils’s play La Dame aux camélias, is one of Verdi’s most popular operas, combining drama, profound emotion and wonderful melodies.
Richard Eyre’s classic production conveys the indulgent social whirl of 19th-century Paris. It provides ...

But beneath the surface glamour of Violetta’s Parisian life run darker undercurrents: her doomed love for Alfredo and the tensions the lovers encounter when they break society’s conventions. La traviata, based on Alexandre Dumas fils’s play La Dame aux camélias, is one of Verdi’s most popular operas, combining drama, profound emotion and wonderful melodies.
Richard Eyre’s classic production conveys the indulgent social whirl of 19th-century Paris. It provides a vivid setting for Verdi’s tuneful score, which includes such favourites as Violetta’s introspective ‘Ah fors’è lui’ and ecstatic ‘Sempre libera’; the duet ‘Pura siccome un angelo’ as Giorgio Germont begs Violetta to leave Alfredo; and ‘Parigi, o cara’, in which the lovers poignantly imagine a life that will never be theirs. The role of Violetta (the ‘fallen woman’ of the title) is one of Verdi’s most complex and enduring characters.

14:30 - Finale Act I (La Traviata) - as Violetta
23:57 - Libiamo ne' lieti calici (La Traviata) - as Violetta
Born in Savona in 1934, she studied singing from an early age in Milano - first as a contralto than as a coloratura soprano and finally as a Dramatic coloratura soprano.
At the age of 19 she performed as Violetta (La Traviata) and as Madama Butterfly in her home city's theatre and she debuted at the Teatro alla Scala in the role of Walter (La Wally).
In 1957 the Scala performed in Edinburgh La sonnambula with Maria
Callas.
Thanks to the huge success, other performances were arranged, but Maria Callas couldn't sing again due to other concerts. Only two days in advance, Renata Scotto was called to replace the Divina, but she obtained a great appreciation anyway.
In 1965 she performed Madama Butterfly at the Metropolitan Opera of New York (where she sung 319 times until 1987) and La Traviata at the Royal Opera House.
In 1977 she was Mimì in La Bohème with Luciano Pavarotti at the Metropolitan - probably the most famous recording of Puccini's opera.
In 1986 she turned successfully to directing opera - the first being her last performance of Madama Butterfly at the Met, becoming the first woman at the house to stage an opera and star in it.
She later brought the production to the Arena di Verona, the Florida Grand Opera and the Palm Beach Opera.
In 1995, at the New York City Opera, she directed La traviata on live television, winning Emmy Award as best live TV event.
In 1960 she married Lorenzo Anselmi (first violin at the Scala).
In her career she performed with Maria Callas, Giuseppe di Stefano, Alfredo Kraus, Franco Corelli, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Tullio Serafin, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Rafael Kubelík, James Levine, Henry Lewis, Riccardo Muti and many others.
