Maria Callas sings "Casta Diva" (Bellini: Norma, Act 1)
The great Maria Callas performs an aria from her signature role, Bellini's druid priestess Norma, with the Orchestre de l'Opera National de Paris and Georges Sebastian. Recorded live at the Palais Garnier on the 19th of December 1958, this concert marked the soprano's debut at the Paris Opera, a major social event for Parisians and for which Callas donned her most elegant couture and a million dollars' worth of jewelry.

Maria Callas Live: Bizet's Carmen Habanera, Hamburg 1962
http://www.maria-callas.com
Callas’s only operatic appearances in Germany were Lucia di Lammermoor, with Karajan conducting, in Berlin in 1955, and La sonnambula in Cologne in 1957, but in both 1959 and 1962 she made concert tours of the country, visiting Hamburg twice. The video recordings of her concerts in the city showcase her in a dazzling variety of Italian and French repertoire for both soprano and mezzo-soprano: three contrasting Verdi roles (Lady Macbeth, Elvira from Ernani and Elisabetta from Don Carlo); Imogene from Bellini’s Il pirata; Giulia from La vestale; Chimène from Massenet’s Le Cid; Verdi’s most explosively dramatic aria for mezzo-soprano – Eboli’s ‘On don fatale’ from Don Carlo; Carmen’s seductive Habanera and Seguédille and, from Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Angelina’s f...

Maria Callas sings Puccini: Tosca - 'Vissi d'Arte' at Covent Garden 1964
Maria Callas Live: http://www.maria-callas.com
Maria Callas' final appearance on the operatic stage was in Tosca at Covent Garden's 1965 Royal Gala. For many opera lovers, Maria Callas and Tosca's Vissi d'Arte are inseparable. "I lived for art; I lived for love" became La Divina's cri de coeur, her swansong, the perfect expression of her own triumphs and tragedies. This unrivaled recording is from that legendary Zeffirelli production in 1964 and is one of just many jewels in the Maria Callas Live edition.

Maria By Callas | Official US Trailer HD (2018)
Tom Volf’s MARIA BY CALLAS is the first film to tell the life story of the legendary Greek/American opera singer completely in her own words.
Told through performances, TV interviews, home movies, family photographs, private letters and unpublished memoirs—nearly all of which have never been shown to the public—the film reveals the essence of an extraordinary woman who rose from humble beginnings in New York City to become a glamorous international superstar and one of the greatest artists of all time.
Assembling the material for the film took director Volf four years of painstaking research, which included personal outreach to dozens of Callas’s closest friends and associates, who allowed him to share their personal memorabilia in the film. When recordings of Callas’s voice aren’t ava...

When recordings of Callas’s voice aren’t available, Joyce DiDonato, one of contemporary opera’s biggest stars, reads her words.

Assembling the material for the film took director Volf four years of painstaking research, which included personal outreach to dozens of Callas’s closest friends and associates, who allowed him to share their personal memorabilia in the film. When recordings of Callas’s voice aren’t available, Joyce DiDonato, one of contemporary opera’s biggest stars, reads her words.

LA SONNAMBULA Bellini – Teatro dell'Opera di Roma
In an apparent idyll high in the Swiss Alps, a secluded village society prepares for the next wedding. Amina is to be the lucky one this time. The groom Elvino, however, soon turns his attention back to his former wife because Amina sleepwalks into the bed of a stranger who has just arrived. Count Rodolfo, son of the former lord of the manor and travelling incognito, cannot convince the villagers of his innocence nor that of Amina, until she sleepwalks again and the collective belief in the supernatural is put to the test.
With its pastoral setting, its Utopian vision of a harmoniously ordered society and a happy ending reached by way of situations of great poignancy, La sonnambula is Bellini’s first mature masterpiece. Here he extends the expressive range of his lyricism with the most be...

Luciano Pavarotti & Joan Sutherland - La Sonnambula - Prendi: l'anel ti dono
The post-war greatest operatic couple singing the beautiful duet from Bellini's La Sonnambula. Recorded in 1983 at a Gala Concert in Sydney (Australia). Sutherland was superb, singing with that breathtaking assurance and jewel-like brilliance that has made her so outstanding in the world of opera today. Pavarotti proved that this is truly one of the most phenomenal voices of our era, used with genuine musicality and artistry.

With its pastoral setting, its Utopian vision of a harmoniously ordered society and a happy ending reached by way of situations of great poignancy, La sonnambula is Bellini’s first mature masterpiece. Here he extends the expressive range of his lyricism with the most beautiful coloratura and lilting melodies; from Anima’s opening aria - which embraces ecstatic introspection, tender recitative-like musings and exuberant virtuosity - to her heart-breaking closing scene. Bellini creates a sense of the lead characters being part of a close-knit community by a constant musical interaction between the soloists and chorus. Teatro del Opera di Roma’s new production is conducted by Francesco Lanzillotta and is directed by Jean-Philippe Clarac & Olivier Deloeuil ‘LE LAB’, starring Lisette Oropesa as Amina and John Osborn as Elvino.

Liszt had no rivals when it came to operatic paraphrases, fantasies and transcriptions. He was able to transform a series of well-known and recognisable sections of an opera into a memorable, cleverly structured pianistic tour-de-force which stood on its own. Other composers who attempted this art were only able to produce a piano reduction of operatic excerpts. In Liszt's hands (and mind) the piano was always able to transform an operatic spectacle into a cohesive, pianistic experience; listeners familiar with the themes of the opera could always find their favorite arias and melodies woven expertly by Liszt into the fabric of his extravaganzas.
Such is the case with the marvellous paraphrase of Liszt's ‘favourite motifs’ from Bellini's ‘La sonnambula’; the work is constructed about five themes from Bellini’s opera, and really presents the drama in miniature by concentrating upon the principal story-line of the sleep-walking Amina who is presumed to be unfaithful to her betrothed Elvino, her rejection by him, her narrow escape from death by drowning whilst sleep-walking, her vindication, and the lovers’ reconciliation. Liszt captures the whole spirit of the piece in what amounts to a three-movements-in-one form whose last section, based on the triumphant ‘Ah! non giunge’, deftly draws all the elements together. It is altogether one of his best fantasies, conveying the whole spirit of the drama in the comparatively microcosmic world of a single piano piece, and is long overdue for revival in the concert hall.
Han Chen demonstrates a great understanding of how to balance exuberance with sensitivity and thoughtfulness; his assured, elegant, and totally effortless technique combined with his idiomatic flair and his use of color and touch to convey character has produced one of the finest CDs from Naxos’ survey of Liszt’s piano music. If you’re a fan of Liszt and the highest order of transcendental virtuosity, grab Volume 41 of their (not yet) complete Liszt project right away.
