In the volume, half of the Straw Hat Pirates pose in futuristic outfits. This cover page was originally part of a two-page spread published with chapter 24, alongside chapter 17's cover. A combined version of this spread, uniquely printed in color, was included on the inside of One Piece Party Volume 4's sleeve.
Color Page: In the magazine, the Straw Hats pose on white stone stairs, all dressed in black formal clothing. A black cat sits behind them on the stairs. This cover is a recreation of Volume 6's cover, with the Straw Hats who had not yet joined the crew added in.
Short Summary[]
After being thrown to Kuraigana Island by Bartholomew Kuma, Zoro asks Dracule Mihawk to train him as a swordsman disciple. Stalling for time, Mihawk makes Zoro perform a set of menial tasks, which Zoro misunderstands to be indirect training.
Long Summary[]
The chapter opens with Usopp and Chopper introducing the concept of the chapter, explaining that it will focus on Zoro's time over the timeskip. They dress up as Dracule Mihawk, and Chopper states that if Kuma had sent him to Kuraigana Island, he would have become a great swordsman instead of Zoro.
Following the Summit War of Marineford, Luffy sent a message to his crew, instrucing them to spend two years before returning to the Sabaody Archipelago. Having seen the message, Zoro begs Dracule Mihawk to train him in swordsmanship, who accepts.
On the first day of training, Mihawk instructed Zoro to paint a large stone wall outside his castle. While he doesn't understand the point, Zoro does as he's told, and returns to the castle hours later. Mihawk tells him that he's finished for the day, further annoying Zoro, who feels like he's wasting his time, and the Humandrills try to console him.
The next day, Mihawk again tells Zoro to paint the wall, claiming he changed his mind on the color. Noticing that Zoro is improperly painting the wall, Mihawk corrects his swinging movement, again annoying Zoro. When he completes the wall, Zoro tries asking for clarification on the training, but Mihawk ignores him, and tells him to wake up early the next day.
The next day, Zoro is again instructed to paint the wall, this time a third color. Annoyed, he begins to do so, noticing that the up-and-down swinging motion of the brush emulates sword swings. When he completes the painting, he practices a similar swing with his sword, noticing a boost in strength, and thanks Mihawk for the training. At Perona's confusion, Zoro explains that the movement of the brush was similar to a sword swing, allowing him to revisit the basics of swordsmanship and further his understanding of them. However, Mihawk simply looks at him in shock, explaining that he didn't do any training yet. Zoro asks for an explanation, and Mihawk responds that he was simply trying to pass the time, annoying Zoro once again.
The next day, Mihawk points out a small island in a lake on Kuraigana Island, explaining that he wants a fruit from the tree that grows there. Zoro swims to the island, noting the difficult currents in the water, and finally makes it there, where he finds Perona. After a short argument, where Perona points out that she can fly, Zoro returns to the shore with one of the fruits. Mihawk eats it, and tells Zoro to get him another one, instructing him to this time use his legs and modify his arm stroke. After Zoro does so, Mihawk ends the day, and Zoro remains confused on his training.
The next day, Zoro is sent to get another fruit. While swimming to the island, he comes to the conclusion that the swimming is his training, with the water pressure forcing strain on his body and the stroke Mihawk instructed him to use emulating a sword swing. Upon returning to shore, Zoro thanks Mihawk for the training; however, like with the painting, Mihawk explains that he hasn't done any training, and was just passing the time.
The next day, Mihawk instructs Zoro to prepare a field for crops. However, instead of a normal hoe, he gives Zoro an inverted one, that must be pushed instead of pulled. Once again, Zoro comes to the conclusion that he's emulating sword techniques; and again, when he tries to thank Mihawk, he's told that he's just been passing the time. Annoyed again, Zoro decides that Mihawk doesn't want to train him, and attacks him instead, to force combat; however, he is easily defeated, with Mihawk only using his Kogatana.
Mihawk chastizes Zoro, explaining that when you ask a favor, you're supposed to bow your head. In response, Zoro points out that he went as far as to perform dogeza. When Mihawk and Perona are unaware of what dogeza is, Zoro explains, and Mihawk responds that he thought Zoro just liked looking at the ground.
While Zoro begins begging for Mihawk's instruction again, the island is suddenly attacked by the Gyro Pirates, who easily defeat the humandrills. As they laugh at the monkeys for imitating humans, Zoro interrupts them, crashing through the pirates harassing the humandrills. He thanks the monkeys for their encouragement during his training as the Gyro Pirates begin identifying their opponents, panicking when they see a Warlord, a Straw Hat, and a Thriller Bark Pirate. They begin apologizing and begging for permission to leave, but Mihawk refuses, and Zoro charges into the pirates, bombarding them with attacks. As he does so, Perona realizes he's applying his "training" from Mihawk, but she gets annoyed when Mihawk acts smug about it.
Later that night, the humandrills have been patched up, and they prepared a feast for the three humans as thanks. Mihawk suggests they rest for the night, promising to start Zoro's proper training the following day.
The next day, Mihawk instructs Zoro to wax the windows, who yells at him in anger.
