The Explosion Girl and the Forest Irregularity (
Plot[]
After flashing back to Komekko playing with the seal at the Tomb of the Evil God, Host heads towards Axel, where he is sure he will be able to find Wolbach. Meanwhile, Yunyun teamed up with Megumin defeats three Giant Toads with Fireball outside Axel's walls, but displeased that only Yunyun is defeating them, Megumin suggests they head towards the forest, where they can subjugate some Lovely Rabbits with a bounty on them for more experience points. The two of them then witness a construction worker wearing a jersey receiving pay for wall construction from the foreman as he complains about the hard labour, only to have a blue-haired construction worker who enjoys the work insist on continuing the job as she takes him to bathe and drink bubbly.
Later in the forest, the pair flees from a large pack of Lovely Rabbits that Megumin picked a fight with, and upon being criticised by Yunyun, the irritated Megumin casts Explosion at the pack hot on their heels, which on top of taking out the Lovely Rabbits also blow the two of them unconscious. They wake up only to find Host standing in front of them, as he asks if they have seen a giant, ebony magic beast. Recognising them to be Crimson Demons from their eyes, Host decides to introduce himself coolly in the Crimson Demons' way, but the girls instead panic and run away.
Fleeing straight to the Guild, Megumin and Yunyun report about the high-ranked Demon and the beast he is looking for, at which Luna guesses that the Demon is looking for the dangerous monster called the Beginner's Bane. On their way back to the inn, Megumin claims that Host was lucky that she had used her magic today, but Yunyun isn't sure if Explosion would have worked on it, and prohibits Megumin who takes that as a challenge from heading back into the forest tomorrow.
Days later, many adventurers in town prepare themselves for a subjugation quest the Guild had requested against the Demon, during which the beautiful but impoverished shopkeeper offers free potions. Megumin decides to take part of the quest which can get them paid just for participating, and tells Yunyun who has misgivings that people will come scouting for them if they perform well. Later during the quest, Yunyun burns a crowd of Slime on the trees above them, impressing Rex and his party. Yet moments later, the vanguard comes running back after the hero with a cursed sword gets beaten by the Demon, sending the rest of the adventurers into a panicked retreat.
Back at the Guild where Luna hears of the disaster that left scores wounded and out of the fight, the adventurers wonder what to do now when even the strongest among them have been defeated. Luna though suggests seeking the help of a newly registered Archpriest whose stats and skills make her powerful enough to exorcise the Demon, and tells the excited adventures that the seldomly seen woman has blue hair and is beautiful like a goddess. As the male adventurers eagerly head out to look for her, the weary Megumin returns to the inn, while Yunyun decides to stay at the Guild for a bit longer in hopes that someone will scout her for their party. On her way back during dusk, Megumin sees an adventurer looking for the blue-haired goddess bumping into the blue-haired construction worker and making her drop her money. The dirty blue-haired construction worker though orders the adventurer to pick up more money from the ground than what she had dropped, and thinking that she cannot possibly be that saintly Archpriest who looks like a goddess despite the blue hair, the busy adventurer simply gives her the inflated amount of money before continuing to search for the blue-haired Archpriest. As the blue-haired woman's fellow worker in a jersey weeps at her antics, Megumin who is of the same mind as that adventurer continues on her way.
Returning to her room, Megumin is surprised to find Cecily, who while stroking Chomusuke explains that she needs Megumin's help, as Zesta had heard the voice of Aqua, the patron deity of Axis Order, asking for some money from the direction of Axel, and had sent her here to investigate. Crawling into Megumin's bed, Cecily interprets the appearance of the Demon as a sign of her needing to use the order's funds for hiring people to kill it, though with the local Axis church barely functioning, she can only afford to hire Megumin. Megumin tries to chase the Priest sniffing her scent on the sheets out, but upon Cecily offering her millions of eris to help her find the Archpriest and slay the Demon, she changes her mind and quickly accepts.
The two then head out to look for the Archpriest, although Megumin doubts whether they can find her if the adventurers who could only find a drunken blue-haired performer failed and shoots down Cecily's recommendations for searching the public baths or places for eating fried toad and drinking bubbly. Megumin decides to check the local church of the Eris Order, but is shocked to see Cecily trying to break in while the Eris Priestess within declines entry to Axis followers. Refusing Cecily's request to obliterate the church, Megumin is horrified when the Axis Priestess throws a rock to break the church window. Taking Cecily later that night to the public cemetery where the Archpriest may likely comfort the wandering lost souls, Megumin screams when the Priest scares her as a joke. Yet Chomusuke then stares at something behind the squabbling pair, which prompts the both of them to flee, leaving the cat behind to listen at the pale and lifeless busty beauty with wavy brown hair remarking about the town turning lively.
The following morning, a sleep deprived Megumin carrying Chomusuke enters the Guild to find Yunyun crying after spending the night there without anyone inviting her to join their party. Rex and his party then show up asking for the mages' help to enact their plan, which involves capturing a Beginner's Bane with Yunyun's Sleep and locking it into a cage, so that they can negotiate with the Demon looking for it. But just as Megumin feels something isn't right, Host suddenly shows up and angrily knocks out Rex and his party with a single hit for what they did to Wolbach, before realising the caged beast is just a Beginner's Bane. He then turns towards Megumin as she tries to slip away with Yunyun, wondering why the scent of Wolbach is coming out from them. Figuring out that Host too is after Chomusuke, Megumin asks Host why he keeps calling her cat Wolbach and offers to find him another black cat. Host who recalls hearing that name from another Crimson Demon kid explains how he doesn't want to fight Crimson Demons, and promises not to harm them or the city if they hand him Wolbach. Later while carting the unconscious Rex and his party back, Megumin isn't sure on what to do, but tells Yunyun she will consider handing over Chomusuke if it can settle the matter.
